Continuing the thread of blog posts related to disabling/un-annoyifying (yep, I made that up) Windows Vista and it's UAC, here's a way to really, really disable the UAC nag and get yourself real Administrator access like in Windows XP prior versions:

Open "gpedit.msc"
(I've already followed these steps on my computer, so notice that the Run dialog has the note "This task will be created with administrative privileges.")
Once in Group Policy Editor, navigate to the following tree item:
Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options
Open the item "User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode" and choose the option "Elevate without prompting"
Click OK and close Group Policy Editor.

You should be able to run programs with Administrator privileges by default. Granted, this is less secure, but that's the way Windows has always been. ;-)

Open up Control Panel, and type in "UAC" into the search box. You'll see a link for "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off":

On the next screen you should uncheck the box for "Use User Account Control (UAC)", and then click on the OK button.

Along the same lines as the last post, here's how to run a shortcut as Administrator either on-demand, or by default.

1. On-Demand

This one is pretty straightforward - right-click on any shortcut and choose "Run as Administrator"

2. By Default

A little more complicated, but only just a bit...

Open the shortcut's properties dialog.
Choose the shortcut tab, then click "Advanced..."
Check "Run as administrator"
Hit OK on each of the dialogs to close them.

Now, this shortcut will always run in an Administrator role, similar to su or sudo on Unix/Linux.

Now that I've finally made the leap to install Windows Vista on my home computer, I thought it might be useful to dig through some old (and new) guides to keep Vista from annoying me as much as it did when I first tried it out in beta. Luckily, things are going much more smoothly this time. Here's a helpful tip from the How-To Geek about how to run a command as an Administrator from the Vista Run box.

FYI: The Run option is not enabled by default on the Start Menu. You'll either need to open it by using the Win + R key combination or by enabling it through the Taskbar Properties, using the steps below:

Right click on the taskbar, then choose properties.
Once in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog, click the "Start Menu" tab, then click "Customize..."
Scroll down to the "Run command" option, and check it.
Close the dialog.

Now, you'll have the "Run..." command back in your Start Menu, but it's worth noting that the newer Vista "Start Search" bar is a lot more versatile than the older "Run..." command. In either case, from "Start Search" or from "Run...", the following steps will help you to run a command as an administrator (from How-To Geek):

To try this out, go to the run box and type in something (cmd, for example)

Now instead of hitting the Enter key, use Ctrl+Shift + Enter. You will be prompted with the obnoxious User Account Control dialog… but it will then open up a command prompt in Administrator mode.

I never thought I would say it, but today, I have switched to Windows Vista Ultimate. No, I don't have a legal key right now, but I have installed it without a key, and I suppose I will buy it at the end of 30 day trial period. With the Ultimate Extras, the product is really charming. Justbe sure to have over 2 gb's of RAM, and everything will be fine.

After installation, I saw that my web camera, Asus ACPI/ATK device and my second ethernet adapter are undetected. I was thinking of searching drivers for these on the web, but while I was thinking, Vista started to download required drivers and updates for my devices. After reboot, voila! I have every hardware installed automatically for me.

So far, so good. Everything works like a charm, and visual effects are really good. Especially DreamScene feature. You can put any video to background of your desktop, and watch it while you are working with your computer.

I didn't installed other software I need right now, so I can't say something about application compatibility. I think that after SP1, the product came to a point where it is actually usable.

So, what about Arch Linux? It is still on my second hard disk, but I'll be using Vista for my desktop computing needs from this day forth. For the first time in my life, I actually liked an operating system from Microsoft.

Now installing Visual Studio, and will enjoy developing Vista based software. Happy coding :)

A sincronização de calendários e contatos entre o Outlook 2003 (SP3) e o iPhone não funciona com as últimas versões do iTunes, pois tem uma falha que a Apple ainda não conseguiu solucionar, que faz com que a sincronização dê uma mensagem de erro e aborte o processo.

Para solucionar, a forma mais simples é desinstalar no Windows Vista tanto o iTunes, QuickTime e o agente de sincronização, reiniciar o PC, baixar uma versão anterior do iTunes e reinstala-la. Tá provado que com a versão 7.4.2 a sincronização funciona corretamente. Claro que com ela perderemos a possibilidade da AppStore, pelo menos poderemos ter nossos contatos e calendários em dia até que alguém consiga resolver o problema.

This article does not apply to the earlier version of Windows Media Center that is included in Windows Vista or in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).

The Windows Media Center TV Pack was released on July 16, 2008. Not all computers that are shipped by hardware vendors in the retail channel have the Windows Media Center TV Pack installed. To check whether your computer has the Windows Media Center TV Pack installed, follow these steps:

1.	Start Windows Media Center.
2.	In the Start window, scroll to Tasks, click Settings, and then click General.
3.	Click About Windows Media Center, and then click Software Version.

If the version is 6.1.1000.18273, you are running the Windows Media Center TV Pack.

If the version number is 6.0.6001.18000, you are not running the Windows Media Center TV Pack. You are running the version of Windows Media Center that is included in Windows Vista or in Windows Vista SP1.'

Windows Task Manager - Performance Monitoring Explained

The best way to improve system performance is to make better use of your RAM. Understanding the Windows Task Manager's Performance graphs and indicators will help you determine what you should do.

The first rule of thumb is that you can never have enough RAM. More is better. So if you can afford to go out an buy a little bit more phisycal memory do so, otherwise follow my tips below.
PCWizKid's Video explains what to look for.

The Task Manager's Performance tab provides the best way to monitor memory use. To run the Task Manager, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, then click on the Performance tab. With it, you can interpret the information as mentioned in the video above and make better use of your memory.

Video notes:
If the Total Commit Charge exceeds the Total Physical Memory, you probably need more RAM. When the Commit Charge is regularly higher than the Physical Memory available, it means that you have to regularly use a Page File, which may slow down your system down if its old. Buy more RAM in that case.

If the Peak Commit Charge is frequently at or near the Limit Commit Charge, you need to increase your memory. When this occurs, it means that your PC is frequently out of memory or close to being out of memory. Either add RAM or increase your Page File size.
Check the PF (PageFile Usage) make sure its not in the red, if so increase it as mentioned in my previous article here.
The Performance Tab has the following areas. (Important ones are highlighted)


Category	Subcategory	What the data means
Totals	Handles	Lets a program use system resources such as registry keys, fonts, and bitmaps. Sometimes, poorly written programs don't close their handles down when the program closes, leading to memory loss. As a practical matter, you won't need to monitor this number.
	Threads	A discrete portion of a program executing a single task independently of other parts of a program. Again, as a practical matter, you won't need to monitor this number.
	Processes	Reports on the number of programs and services (processes) currently running on your system. Monitor this to see whether you have too many programs and services running on your PC. To shut down unnecessary services, see [Hack #4].
Commit Charge (K)	Total	The total amount of physical memory (RAM) and virtual memory (page file) currently in use, in kilobytes. The more programs, files, and data you have open, the greater your commit charge will be. The greater the commit charge, the more demands will be put on your system. To reduce the commit charge, close programs and files, especially large files.
	Limit	Reports on the total amount of physical and virtual memory that is currently available for your PC, measured in kilobytes. To increase the limit, you can increase the Page File size (see article 4.9 "Optimize Your Swap File Size") or add RAM to your system.
	Peak	Reports on the highest total amount of memory, measured in kilobytes, that has been in use during your current session. Check this value each session to see whether the Peak value is frequently at or near the Limit value. If it is, you need to increase your memory, by either adding RAM or increasing your Page File size.
Physical Memory (K)	Total	Displays the total amount of RAM in your PC, in kilobytes. This number can be confusing; to find out the amount of RAM in megabytes, divide it by 1,024.
	Available	Reports on the total amount of RAM, in kilobytes, currently available. When available RAM is used up, your system begins to use its Page File.
	System Cache	Reports on the total amount of RAM, in kilobytes, that is being used for the most recently accessed data and programs. Programs and data can be in the system cache even after they have been closed down; the PC looks to the system cache first when opening a program or file, since it can be opened from the cache faster than from the hard disk.
Kernel Memory (K)	Total	The total amount of memory, in kilobytes, in use by the primary components of the XP kernel. The kernel is the core programs and files that make up the operating system.
	Paged	The total amount of memory in a Page File, in kilobytes, used by the primary components of XP.
	Nonpaged	The total amount of memory of RAM, in kilobytes, used by the primary components of XP.

Hello!

I am writing this blog to you via the Windows Vista voice recognition program.

I've only recently found out about this fabulous piece of software that comes along with the operating system. It is so clever! I can dictate to it, I can control the Internet using it, and I can effectively control my whole computer simply by using my voice. It is absolutely amazing! I have gone power crazy!!!

I have found the software to be very accurate at picking up my vocal range, and considering that I have only just started using it, it is rarely making a mistake. The more you use it, the more it learns. Not only that the system is remarkably quick, and can also make intelligent suggestions to any errors that it makes.

I will never have to use my hands again!! :-)

Wow! It even enters a :-) when I say the words " smiley face" - now that is great!

Just think... I will never have to type a long essay ever again, I can dictate my shopping list to Tesco (it even has that word in its vocabulary), and I can now watch porn hands free! My life will never be the same again!

COR! I sure have used a lot of exclamation marks in this post! Look there's another one! And another! It's just so exciting!

Anyway, my voice is now starting to go hoarse from all of this talking and correcting, I think I might give it a rest for a short while before I wear the poor thing out.

But hey, it sure makes you feel very very powerful! ‹evil grin›

A partire dal 30 giugno 2008,infatti, Microsoft non consentirà più agli OEM di preinstallare Windows XP sui Computer in vendita. Salvo alcune eccezioni, di cui parleremo a breve, questo significa che su tutti i nuovi PC proposti dai vari produttori non troveremo più il caro vecchio Windows XP,ma esclusivamente il più recente Windows Vista,o, in casi ovviamente rari e sporadici, una sistema operativo Linux tra quelli più in voga al momento. Questo primo passo non decreta definitivamente la "condanna a morte" di Windows XP,ma ne bloccherà completamente l'adozione sui nuovi sistemi; gli utenti avranno si la facoltà di acquistare una licenza di tipo retail per proprio conto, ma solamente fino al 31 gennaio 2009.

Oltre tale data (31 Gennaio 2009), Windows XP non sarà più disponibile in alcun modo, salvo le eccezioni elencate sopra. Considerando il grande successo dei cosiddetti nettop, proposti in primis da Asus, Acer e MSI, Microsoft ha infatti dovuto rivedere le proprie strategie al fine di arginare il crescente successo ottenuto da Linux in questo particolare ambito, consentendo ai venditori di preinstallare sui suddetti sistemi Windows XP Home Edition fino al mese di giugno del 2010, periodo entro cui Microsoft dovrebbe riuscire a sfornare un sistema adatto alle esigenze di questi dispositivi ed in grado di attrarre fortemente l'attenzione degli utenti.

Vi è inoltre un'altra scappatoia: acquistare una licenza di Windows Vista Business o Ultimate ed effettuare un downgrade a Windows XP. Tecnicamente le licenze delle due edizioni di Windows Vista in questione prevedono la possibilità di effettuare un downgrade del sistema a Windows XP, ma solo su espressa richiesta del cliente. HP, Dell e altri produttori continueranno a proporre questa opzione sui propri siti fino al prossimo anno, ma non è chiaro come tale proposta potrà essere veicolata anche attraverso le tradizionali catene della distribuzione, dove i computer esposti sono già pronti alla consegna.

Queste eccezioni costituiscono tuttavia solamente un palliativo: Microsoft continuerà difatti a rilasciare gli aggiornamenti in forma gratuita solamente fino al 14 aprile 2009. Oltre tale data si entrerà nella fase di supporto cosiddetta "Extended", in cui solamente le patch sulla sicurezza verranno rilasciate a titolo gratuito, mentre per tutti gli altri aggiornamenti sarà invece necessario sottoscrivere un abbonamento. Questa ultima fase terminerà l'8 aprile del 2014 e segnerà in maniera definitiva la fine di Windows XP.

Gli utenti Windows saranno dunque costretti, presto o tardi, ad adeguarsi ad una nuova versione del sistema operativo targato Microsoft, oppure a migrare verso altri lidi offerti da Apple o dall'universo Linux. Ad ogni modo, per ora non è il caso di allarmarsi troppo: il passaggio alla nuova versione di Windows avverrà gradualmente, in modo del tutto simile a quanto avvenuto anni fa con il passaggio da Windows 98 a Windows XP, per cui preoccuparsi anzitempo è prematuro.
