I have been working on an iSCSI project at work. We are trying to determine a good backend for our

I have been working on an iSCSI project at work. We are trying to determine a good backend for our VMware implementation. We have been researching the usual suspects such as EMC, Netapp, Compellent, EQlogic, Pillardata, and Lefthand. While I have done several VMware implementations I have not done any with iSCSI to date. So my knowledge of iSCSI was a little bit lacking. I knew the basics ethernet, initiators, targets, and the like.

So in an effort to increase my knowledge of iSCSI I decided to mess around with Openfiler this weekend. I decided to do a bunch of testing of it on VMware before I actually purchased hardware and tried it as a backup solution. If you go to:

http://www.openfiler.com

You can find all of the information you could want. They have a wonderful walkthrough of the graphical installer. They also offer a nice pre built vmware appliance that you can run with no trouble. I decided to do it both ways, I did the install into a vmware appliance and found it very simple and easy to walk through. I then decided to download their prebuilt appliance and run that on VM Fusion on my imac. I gave it a couple of additional hard drives and then went through the process of setting up the volume groups and luns.

It was surprisingly easy to get everything setup on the Openfiler side. After starting up the VM I then went to the webgui page and was able to navigate around very easily. The other issue I had was getting an iSCSI initiator for my macbook to test connection. Luckily I found this one from GlobalSAN. The install was easy for the initiator and after my macbook rebooted I was able to launch the software.

The only issue that I ran into was actually in setting up the connection. The Openfiler documentation was not terribly clear how to define the network hosts that would be connecting to the target. Also the GlobalSan initiatior was not terribly clear exactly what error messages I was dealing with. For about a half hour I was getting an error of 0203, which didn't make any sense. At least it didn't until I went into the console of my macbook and found that there was more text to go with that error. It turns it was an error with not being able to find the specified LUN. Which I thought was odd since I had copied and pasted it out of the web gui. I then decided on a whim to try defining my host as a /32 rather than it's actual mask of /24. I made that change then started the connection and a second later I was connecting in the iSCSI realm.

My macbook was able to connect over my wireless network to a virtual machine running on my imac with no problem. The speed was great and everything worked flawlessly. I formatted the LUN as HFS+ and copied data back and forth. I then decided to do another test and reformatted the LUN as FAT32. I then started up my Vista VM on my macbook and used the builtin iSCSI initiator(Apple are you listening). Since I had already learned my lesson on subnet specification for the ACL, the Vista VM immediately attached and found the LUN that was defined for it. I was able to connect and copy data back and forth between my macbook and Vista VM.

So now I am thinking about building an actual machine running openfiler and start using it to do the backups for my machines. Also I could build an ESX VM and then use the openfiler machine as the hard drives for that. So I think a trip to Fry's is in order.

The primary goal of this blog is going to be to share and discuss strategies for technology sales an

The primary goal of this blog is going to be to share and discuss strategies for technology sales and marketing. My personal current vertical within this somewhat broad title is enterprise IT and software. I've been through the ringer with trying to market many aspects of technology. The one thing I find more consistent than anything is the good old fashion quality factor. If you provide all around quality your clients not only come back but they'll also spread the word. However, I'd like to talk more about simply getting in the door. How do you get that initial opportunity at providing the quality needed to establish a long term relationship? That's the million dollar question.

In this blog I'll outline things that have and haven't worked for me, ideas that I'm debating in my head, and perhaps even put some questions out there to the community. I'll encourage readers to comment wherever they feel they can add value. I'm always appreciative of constructive criticism, advice and shared knowledge.

The world of Technology Sales and Marketing is a great world to be in. It requires a unique person. An individual has to be able to undertand and then portray highly technical concepts in laymen terms quickly and effectively via whichever marketing tool they may be using. A process has to be defined to somehow turn that into obtaining a form of communication between you and targeted clients. If you can achieve that, then a more social and relationship management task is next. When an account executive takes over, relationship managment plays a highly critial role and the initial perception of all around quality begins to be a major factor. At this point in the process, let's say you're walking on thin ice. You have to be able to effectivly communicate a true benefit. Words are choosen carefully and every sentence is one side to a Rubiks Cube. If you're good at this aspect of the process then it most likely comes natural to you. Good technical knowledge and the abilty to relate combined with a real and actual need on the client's part will turn things into a more team type of environment. Once you're at this point relationship skills are still big but you also need to be concerned about response times, your ability to manage internal resources, knowledge of your competition, and let's not forget - detecting the people who are just trying to get something for free.

These are all examples of topics I would like to touch upon in this blog. Please share your experiences and let us know your thoughts. Try and elaborate on what you think was the major factors in whatever went wrong or right. I'll be doing the same and I look forward to building a community that encourages great revenues, sound products, and quality services.

Most notably for me this means blessed support of Exchange 2007sp1 running under ESX!

Excellent work to get this done so quickly - MS only announced the SVVP programme a short while ago.

VMware heeft update 1 van de VI Toolkit vrijgegeven. Hieronder zie je een quote van de blogpost op vmware.com:

Some users had reported slowness when using the Get-VM cmdlet. The reason turned out to be an odd quirk in querying some types of network adapters, so many people weren't affected at all. On the other hand, if you were affected, it was pretty annoying. To address this we've released Update 1 of our toolkit. If you've had trouble with Get-VM, download it things will go a lot smoother. One user reported that his queries went from more than 5 minutes to just over 10 seconds -- a world of difference!

This is the only change we made to the toolkit, so don't expect lots of new functionality when you download, you'll have to wait a bit longer for that. If you haven't had any trouble with 1.0 it's perfectly fine to keep using it until the next release.

This is a series I wanted to start on the blog, something for all the people out there that say I hate Windows. Yes, I have a fervent undying love for Apple and their products, but most of us started somewhere - somewhere being a PC running MIcrosoft Windows. Ninety percent of the time I am running OS X Leopard, but there are a few times where I run Windows. For example, the Office for Mac suite is in no way comprable to the Microsoft Office 2007 suite for Windows. Not to mention there's NO Access for Mac. So here we go, first app for the series!

This part of the series is featuring... a screen saver. I know what you're thinking. You were expecting a huge powerhouse app that was going to rock the very foundation you stand on. Well, not every app is groundbreaking and fantabulous. The screensaver is called twitsaver.

This isn't your ordinary screensaver, packed with copious amounts of spyware/malware. Instead, it's a screensaver showing what pictures that Twitter users are sharing in real time. Definitely a cool way to find new twitter-folk. Yes, you may get an occasional picture of a random guy eating a cheesburger or a crazy lolcat, but it's definitely fun to watch. Give it a try, you'll like it.

I've passed a few hours at work just watching the screensaver. Good times. :)

If you have any Windows apps you think are worth checking out, send me an email over at igerard8@gmail.com.

Recently I have set up a SRM environment in a virtual lab for testing and performing demos. I took the opportunity to create a video giving an overview of Site Recovery Manager. The video walks through a normal configuration and then a test failover. It's a simple environment but will give someone a complete picture of what SRM is capable of doing.

For those interested, the lab environment is easy to set up and a great way to learn about SRM. I have used both VMWare Workstation 6.5 Beta 2 and Fusion 2.0 Beta. You can also use an ESX host if you want. The most complex piece of configuring the lab is the SAN environment. You can either use EMC's Celerra Simulator or LeftHand Network's VSA. The lab environment consists of two Windows Servers running Virtual Center and housing the VC database, two SANs, and at least two ESX servers.

Next week I will try to do a more in-depth writeup on configuring the lab environment. In the mean time there is some good information available online to help anyone that wants to set this up. Mike Laverick has posted a sample chapter from his upcoming book on SRM that covers the configuration of LeftHand's VSA for snapshot replication. His final book is due very soon and is excellent. Mike also has some SRM videos as well. I have mentioned Xtravirt before. They offer some whitepapers on configuring VMWare Workstation to run ESX as a virtual machine.

Click here for the complete list of articles

This is the first part in creating a virtual image with PeopleSoft HR installed. We will use VMWare Server for the virtual machine and the host machine is a linux machine. The PeopleSoft server will be Linux too so that everything is installed from downloads. Of course, this will not be a production ready machine, but it should work great for learning and testing purposes. You can always deviate from the instructions enough to use Windows or other supported tools if you wish.

VMWare server can be installed easily enough using these instructions:

Install VMware Server 1.0.6 on Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy"

Installation on other host operating systems is not difficult. You should be able to use any host operating system you like assuming that it is supported by VMWare. You can download VMWare Server directly from here:

VMWare Server

Once installed, log in and click the create a new virtual machine -- click the "Create a new virtual machine" button.

This will open the wizard to create the new machine.

Next, choose a typical image.

Next, choose Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux for the version.

Next, choose a name for the new virtual machine.

Next, choose a networking option. If you wish to transfer files using Windows File Sharing, you may want to choose bridged. This gives you the ability to access files from other computers/servers on the network. If you are on a computer with multiple ethernet cards like a laptop with a wired and wireless card, you might want to choose NAT so that you don't have to worry about which one should be mapped to the machine.

Next, choose a hard drive size. It works best/easiest if you choose a huge size like 100G and don't allocate now. This makes the hard drive flexible, and you don't have to worry about trying to make it larger later. The image will take as much as it needs without crashing. If you need to delete files and conserve space later you can and then shrink the hard drive to free up the space on the host.

Finally, click Finish, and you should have a new empty virtual computer.

First, VMware Fusion 2.0 sees the release of RC1. Lots of bug fixes in the update, as well as the addition of McAfee VirusScan Plus for Windows. I tried this yesterday and found it easy to install from a menubar option. This is a sensible addition given the risks attached to accessing the internet on an unprotected Windows machine. Other improvements include Spanish and Italian language support, Unity 2 and multiple snapshots. Full details at the Vmware web site.

The other update is Virtualbox, which has today seen the release of version 2. Again, a lot of updates which are listed at the Virtualbox web site. I haven't had a chance to try this yet, so it's next on the install list. It's nice to see the free option progressing well along with the comercial offerings, and I'm wondering how long it will be before Parallels has a big announcent.

TimeData Remote Recovery

This design is almost a mirror image of the first where it may not be necessary to have the TimeData repository locally where retrieval isn’t performed often but still available if need. The TimeData repository is now located at the disaster recovery facility so operational recovery is still an option should the primary site go down and Double-Take is still used to provide high availability to the DR facility.

Either of these solutions is perfectly acceptable to provide disaster recovery in combination with operational recovery and each will help eliminate the length of time associated with tape restorations. The decision will come down to where you want to have your TimeData repository and that will depend on couple of variables:

q How often will you need to recover lost or corrupted files? If this is a regular and common occurrence in your environment then it may make sense to have the repository local. Otherwise having the repository at the disaster recovery facility add protection from a site failure and still provides the ability to retrieve lost files.

q What type of data will need to be retrieved? If you are only restoring an e-mail or word document now and then that is fine to transmit over a WAN but if you have retrieve regular CAD or other large image files then it may make sense to also have the repository local and on the same LAN.

The other option that isn’t displayed in these diagrams is having Double-Take at both local and remote facilities to provide both High and Remote Availability while at the same time protecting the revisions of the server data for that additional operational recovery.

For more information Marc LaFlure, TimeData Product Manager, will be presenting an in-depth look on how to use TimeData for operational recover and how to reduce tape restoration for business critical servers.

I agree with the musings of Chris Preimesberger and Tom Valovic on the possibilities of Cisco acquiring control of VMware from EMC. However, Chris does only briefly discuss the outcome of the what-if scenario -- namely, what would Cisco do with VMware in its portfolio of acquired technologies. IOS anyone? Want my take? Ping me, and I am happy to chat.

Zoals de meeste Bloggers heb ik ook een e-mail gehad van VKernel met de aankondiging van hun nieuwe appliance SearchMyVM.

SearchMyVM instantly deploys exactly like each one of VKernel’s virtual appliances. With a “Google-like” search interface, you can find virtual machines, hosts, clusters, storage, resource pools, files, snapshots, VMware tools, applications and configuration information. Over 75 different types of attributes are fully indexed and available for you to search.

Please download the SearchMyVM Beta today and give it a try. I'm personally looking forward to your feedback.

VMware Fusion 2 Goes Release Candidate: Embedded Antivirus Software, Enhanced Localization, and More

VMware Fusion 2 Goes Release Candidate: Embedded Antivirus Software, Enhanced Localization, and More..

The news is a few days late, but just in case you found out as late as I did...

By the way, even if you aren't a VMWare Fusion licensee, betas and release candidates are free for download after registration.

I found the best thing about it from 2.0 beta 2, and now release candidate 1, is that CPU utilization has become very low compared to VMWare Fusion 1.x. Also, for those of you who want to run 3D software in a VM, it has better 3D support; though I disable it since I use a Mini. It also, I think, offers Unity for Linux.

(Though I don't mess with that much because OS X's Unix support for command line and X11 progams is fairly complete, at least for the applications I use at present. Though some people have problems with X11; I don't though since I run xquartz, which is the latest open-source branch of what gets folded into the X11 code used for Leopard occasionally.)
