Today’s topic is: Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Marketing: Can’t We Just Get Along

Today’s topic is: Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Marketing: Can’t We Just Get Along?

Recently, on Twitter, I noticed some talk from Search Engine Optimization experts actually downplaying the importance of Social Media Marketers. It was inferred that SEO is superior and social media marketing is simply for those who failed at SEO.

So… this got me thinking: Why would search marketers say that? Wouldn’t any additional form of online exposure be GOOD for internet marketing efforts?

Could it be that search engine optimizers are threatened by Social Media Marketers? Are they afraid they’ll lose customers?

Well, if that’s the case, naturally, they would frown upon social media marketing.

What are your thoughts on this?

Can SEO’s and SMM’s get along in an increasingly competitive online marketing world? Is one better than the other? Should they complement each other?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Listen to the "podcast": SEO vs. SMM: FIGHT!

FWIW: Personally I think you can't have effective SMM without a good SEO foundation. Naturally I love me some search engine optimization; it's the bomb-diggity of internet marketing. I happen to advocate both, though, depending on what the objective is. YMMV. :)

In this article, Steve Rubel says this:

"If marketers want to succeed in this Web 2.0 world, they need to follow their audiences, not the technologies"

Steve writes a great blog called micro persuasion. He's essentially saying that Web 2.0 (or whatever you want to call it) is about the people who are in communities that have sprouted up around your product. What you need to do is this: instead of simply thinking about the tool, think about what motivates people to join the tool.

What motivates people to share images on Flickr? To share videos on YouTube? To share what they are up to in 140 characters or less on Twitter? To share likes/dislikes on Facebook. One of my favorite quotes is from the guy who founded Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. He said something like this:

Communities exists. Instead of trying to create one, think instead what the community wants. And give it to them.

I didn't put that into a quote because I'm paraphrasing. I also read the quote from a slide show on slideshare, so I can't guarantee authenticity. But I love the idea of the quote. I think people are motivated by the desire to share (hence the name of this blog).

Why do they share? I think it comes down to this simple insight: people like to be noticed. Thus, one thing a community might want from a brand is recognition from said brand. I know that when I wrote a post that mentioned Dell, they noticed. I would argue that this simple interaction had more impact on me than any ad ever would. No ad could connect on that level.

So start noticing. In doing so, you'll get a feel for what people are saying. Because I sincerely think that you have to or people will notice that your brand isn't looking.

A good edition of The Clinic on tuesday at IBM's italian HQ; audience was a bunch of geeks I'm told - even if they now have fancy names like "System Architect" or "Advisor".

My bit was at the very end of a long day of presentations and thick stuff, lotsa "in the bowels of the system" geeky topics for true geeks who really know how to make stuff work. Respect.

Sadly I had only time for a shortened version which I focused on examples, our experiences and case studies: at the end of the day, I feel this is always the most valuable contribution I bring.

Chiara and Anna SIlvia, who were kind enough to invite me, say they'll share the feedback forms with me when they are done, so curious to see reactions & suggestions, however, if you were one of the poor victims, feel free to share here your rants & raves.

Unfortunately, due to the sheer size of the file, I cannot share my presentation which moreover is not done in PowerPoint and therefore cannot take advantage of popular presentation sharing services, grrr! However, I commited to Anna Silvia to give her a CD with the file, so go pester her next week.

1. What's in the news? Think about the big story of the moment. This week (this year) the American presidential election has been a continuous hit, only really eclipsed for a while by the Olympics in August. At the moment, readers are fascinated by Obama, Palin and McCain and not just in the States. What can you say that is different or new? Here's a perfect example of a popular Digg story combining the Foo Fighters and John McCain

4. Go niche Digg is about to launch new ways of customising the site for users so they can link up with other lovers of niche content. Niche is the future.

And finally, one way to get noticed on Digg is to appeal for Diggs - so if you like this post - please digg it.

After reviewing Amy's profile, I think there is one general traits professionals in the public relations and marketing industry seem to have in common. And that is the fact that we love to be busy, meet deadlines and have action-packed days. Read on to learn more about Amy Bomar, president of Bomar Marketing Solutions.

Also, we are looking for a few good professionals to profile each Friday for our Palmetto PR Diva Dish section. If you are interested in participating or would like to nominate someone, please let me know!

o	Please provide title and a brief description of what you do:

I’m an independent public relations and marketing practitioner located in Greenville, South Carolina. Services include strategic public relations planning, copywriting, media relations, media training, issues management, collateral development and branding.

o	How did you become interested in the public relations/advertising industry?

A love of writing first led me to this career. I studied communications and journalism in college. When I entered the business word, I discovered that my communication, writing and strategic skills made public relations a great fit for me.

o	What changes have you seen in the industry that is the most interesting to you?

Constant access to new information is so exciting these days. It helps us all become better educated consumers and learners. The Internet is such a great learning tool, I use it constantly for research and professional development purposes. Of course the rapid access to information can also be a challenge if your organization or one of your client’s organizations is portrayed poorly online!

o	Are you involved in any professional associations? If so, what are they and what do you learn by being involved?

I’ve been a member of various groups through the years. Currently, I’m a member of the South Carolina Chapter of PRSA (SCPRSA), a member of PRSA’s Independent Practitioner Alliance and I’m planning to join the Carolinas Healthcare Public Relations and Marketing Society (I worked at a healthcare organization for 14 years and have several healthcare clients today). While being a member of a professional association is great, I believe you really get your value out of your membership through involvement – serving on a committee, regularly attending meetings etc. This year, I’m serving as chair of SCPRSA’s Communications Committee, which has given me the opportunity to work and make friends with PR professionals throughout the state.

o	What is the one piece of advice you would give students that are interested in pursuing a career in the public relations/investor relations/marketing industry?

Keep reading! In order to be an outstanding advisor to your clients or employer, you need to be knowledgeable about all kinds of topics – from PR to politics to local business news. Read a variety of publications (online or print), blogs, books etc. Learn about the latest trends, interesting facts and keep up with what everyone is talking about. Become a life-long learner!

o	What is the best thing about your job?

Okay – this probably says something about my personality, but I love to be busy. In one of my former positions, I loved crazy media days when we had some kind of crisis occurring - the media were camped out, the phones wouldn’t stop ringing, our pagers were going off and we had to be five places at the same time. I love making decisions in times of crisis. I actually enjoy deadlines (crazy, I know). Writing assignments are also one of the favorite parts of my job.

o	What is the thing you like least about your job?

Downtime in between projects. Of course that never happens, because there is always something I should or could be doing (or learning)!

o	Are there any exciting announcements you’d like to tell us about (either with your company or one of your clients)?

My business is doing very well and I’ve had several new client developments recently.
My family and I moved to Greenville a little more than 1 ½ years ago and I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been so welcoming to me. I’ve made many great friends in the local PR and marketing community. I’m also very grateful to the amazing group of independent public relations practitioners in the Upstate who are so supportive of one another, sharing resources, advice and opinions.

o	How do you balance your professional career with your personal life?

I have three school age children, which is one of the reasons I decided to become an independent practitioner when we moved to South Carolina. I love my schedule these days! I get the kids ready for school, put them on the bus at 7:20, exercise, and am ready for my work day! I work a full day but still have the flexibility of being around when the kids are home from school, which is great. I often put in work hours in the evening too.

o	Anything else you would like to add?

Kudos to Kim and Liza for this blog, and their efforts in bringing together PR practitioners throughout the state! I especially admire how Liza and Kim are interested in reaching out/mentoring the younger generation of PR professionals in the region. There are a lot of professionals with great experience in this area, so we need to do all we can to share our knowledge with those entering the field!

Cone, a branding and communications strategy agency, has just released some fascinating data.

When asked about specific types of interactions, Americans who use social media believe:

    * Companies should use social networks to solve my problems (43%)
* Companies should solicit feedback on their products and services (41%)
* Companies should develop new ways for consumers to interact with their brand (37%)
* Companies should market to consumers (25%)

It isn't clear exactly how this applies to nonprofits and foundations, but is encouraging. This passage in particular gives me hope.

“All of this is great news for marketers,” Hollywood explains. “Men and younger consumers are traditionally the most challenging to reach, while the highest income households are typically very desirable; here they are saying ‘Come market to us and interact with us online.’ This is really a license to put more energy and resources into this medium and do it effectively.”

I think it is safe to say that the same lessons apply for those of us working on advocacy. Our audiences want to be reached through social media. It is up to them to meet them where they are.

It seemed like an interesting study in the human condition, especially now. But some of the questions, though applicable to Proust's times, were not as timely or current to todays times. So I updated them. Here are the questions. Anyone for authenticity?

What is your fondest memory?

How would you like to die?

What is your current state of mind?

Self-discovery has never been in more need. I think today, our transparent self needs to get in touch with the people who are having a hard time being "real". Not only does this extend beyond social media, but I see it permeating everything these days. It's about disclosure and what we are articulating or trying to say. It's about having conversations. You should send this to the people that are in dire need of having or participating in conversations. Lets talk, lets exchange, lets share. and then lets compare answers.

Web development organization Sierra Bravo came up with the idea for an event to benefit Minneapolis area non-profits that was a huge success. Title the F1 Challenge they brought together web developers tasked with the mission of (re)development of 11 area non-profit's web presences in a 24 hour period. Pretty cool huh! Being on the board of several non-profits myself and knowing how difficult it is for most organizations to put up a good online representation of themselves I can't get over how great this idea is.

Jody Dzuranin and Alison Colman first brought this to my attention as an event they'd like to help put on. Obviously I was immediately on-board. Last night we had an initial planning meeting with members of the Fuse Factory and CSMC (as well as others) coming together to get the ball rolling. So how can you help? Here's what we need:

Location - I've contacted Tech Columbus so if you have an in there feel free to help out. Otherwise there are certainly tons of possibilities for this. We need workspace and good solid online connectivity. This will be a weekend event.

Developers - We need web developers/designers, either professionals or very capable students/individuals. The more developers we can commit the more non-profits we can benefit. Similarly this means more networking between cool individuals.

Sponsors - We'll want to provide food, etc. for participants and that means either collecting a fee from participants which may have a negative effect or finding sponsors who can benefit from participation as well.

Volunteers - You can never have too many volunteers. If you want to help with planning or with the event itself please contact me and I'll put you in touch with the group.

Jon Pincus' proposes a framework on his Voter Suppression Wiki for using hashtags for using Twitter on Election Day. Would love to hear what folks think about this and how to make it workable in real-time on the ground:

To be used for Twitter hashtags, photos, videos, blog posts, abbreviations in SMSs, and t-shirts.

Location

The location the rest of the message refers to

[state] + [first four letters of the county] + [precinct, if known]

So, in downtown Cleveland, for example, the hashtag would be #OHCuya07

Questions:

1) how to encode state-wide information?
2) special case college campuses?

Incident type

Use one of these codes when reporting information about something happening at a location.

vmm -- voting machine malfunction
wait -- current waiting time
hava -- accessibility (Help America Vote Act) issue
extend -- polling times extended
help -- help wanted (typically for investigation)
??? -- fraudulent registrations

Alert type

Use one of these codes when sending out an alert.

media -- a story!
blog -- something for the bloggers
gtwo -- short for "get the word out", a message that needs to go out

Party information

If the incident applies to voters of a particular party, or the alert is intended for supporters of a particular party

dem
rep
green
lib
const
...

Source

When relaying information from a trusted source. These should be used very sparingly but could be useful as backup channels for emergencies.

sos -- Secretary of State.
camp -- a campaign
rov -- registrar of voters

Steeds vaker hoort men de term web 2.0 langskomen.

... to a new role at Microsoft. During my 4 years at Microsoft, first as the Belgian Consumer Marketing Manager for MSN and later as the Marcom Lead for MSN and Windows Live in EMEA, I've been experimenting with social media. Remember the Windows Live Sessions we did all over Europe (e.g. Brussels, London, ...), inviting bloggers to events such as MIX, sponsoring and attending Barcamps or Girl Geek Dinners and bigger events such as Le Web for instance, the adventures with Steve and Hugh around the Blue Monster, speaking at events, getting the word out on 'Bring The Love Back', engaging on blogs and twitter, etc... Although it was only a small part of my job (the main part was setting up online marketing campaigns), I've always been very passionate about it.

Since October 1st that has all changed. Since then I've started working in a new role as Digital Media Communications Manager for all Windows Consumer brands - PC, mobile and online - as well as MSN and Live Search in EMEA. I got to say, it's like getting paid to do your hobby just like Steve seems to think about his job as well. And it's also the reason why this blog has gone silent for a bit, as I'm still transitioning stuff from my old job to other people. Also our fiscal year started on July 1st so I got to get my new plans ready asap, expect more about that here soon.

Anyway, I've been waiting for the moment I could tell you all this, wish me luck and if ever you have ideas on how you think I should run this... let me know in the comments.

Hats off to the four visionaries who wrote the manifesto way back in 1999. The essence of the book is that organisations/brands need to open up their corporate doors and allow, in fact encourage a full dialogue between their employees and their customers. They should listen much more than they do, and also learn from what is being said....as opposed to transmitting the usual corporate speak which turns so many people off (customers and workforce).

I'd be amazed if Rick Levine, Doc Searles, David Weinberger and Chris Locke could foresee the likes of facebook, myspace, twitter and such social media phenomenon, however they did predict the way the internet has evolved today. The power has been transferred back to the individual and online markets are now a bunch (bunch defined as thousands, even millions) of people talking about stuff...just like they used to be in the traditional real world marketplace.

Brands need to immerse themselves in these conversations in order to provide the markets with what they want and there has never been a more perfect time to do so. So...has the Cluetrain Manifesto become a reality? Are organisations prepared to get involved...or will they refuse to adapt and continue to pump out the same old push marketing nonsense?

There's a bit of the preaching to the choir factor here as the respondents already used social networks but the important thing is that in a medium that's all about interacting with people, that 6 out of 10 seems quite willing to invite companies into their social media activities. In my last post about humanizing print and user experiences, this is somewhat validating for me. We're human and we prefer more human ways of getting and interacting with information and organizations. Strike another one for the human factors professionals.
