One of the main tools on th command line is
grep
. It is most often used to search for specific strings in program output, text files and so on. For the sake of an example, the syntax to search a the X.Org log for the string
nvidia
is:
[sourcecode language='css']
# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log|grep -i nvidia
(--) PCI:*(0@1:0:0) nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 135M rev 161, Mem @ 0xfd000000/0, 0xe0000000/0, 0xfa000000/0, I/O @ 0x0000ef00/0, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072
(II) NV: driver for NVIDIA chipsets: RIVA 128, RIVA TNT, RIVA TNT2,
(--) NV: Found NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M at 01@00:00:0
[/sourcecode]
The
-i
flags the search as case-insensitive. That way you can only search for one expression a time. In case you want to search for more expressions at the same time, the option
-e
is needed:
[sourcecode language='css']
# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log|grep -i -e TNT -e nvidia
(--) PCI:*(0@1:0:0) nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 135M rev 161, Mem @ 0xfd000000/0, 0xe0000000/0, 0xfa000000/0, I/O @ 0x0000ef00/0, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072
(II) NV: driver for NVIDIA chipsets: RIVA 128, RIVA TNT, RIVA TNT2,
Unknown TNT2, Vanta, RIVA TNT2 Ultra, RIVA TNT2 Model 64,
Aladdin TNT2, GeForce 256, GeForce DDR, Quadro, GeForce2 MX/MX 400,
(--) NV: Found NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M at 01@00:00:0
[/sourcecode]

This is a typical problem I often thought about but never got around to look it up. And there are surprisingly few people out there who now that feature!

I have been giving theoretical physics a thorough and systematic going over and I think I’ve come up with a unified solution that incorporates gravity and all the particles.

I'm thankful for the work of:

Issac Newton

Albert Einstein

R. Buckminster Fuller

Max Plank

Richard Feynman

and a broad array of experimental physicists

Giants whose shoulders I stand on.

Each row in this model is a set of particles. Everything is ultimately composed of distance and time.

I am creating a new taxonomy because the existing names do not consistently define the particles of the system.

When

Where

How

What

Why

How Much

System Schema

The structure of the schema is three dimensional and composed of three shells:

Inner Tetrahedral Intrashell:

Middle Octahedral Intershell:

Outer Icosahedral Boundary Shell:

The edges, vertexes and connections between the shells are all significant in revealing the dependecy of the particles upon one another.

This is the best I can do for a two dimensional representation:

Who

Network Schema

Saw what happened during the meeting between oil companies and civil society groups, led by transport organizations such as Piston. Groups are demanding another round of oil price rollbacks. Oil firms resisted. They say they don't have any more to give to the people since government imposed a higher oil tariff. With higher taxes, oil companies can't give the difference between the US$82/barrel price with that of the present US$110/barrel basis of present pump prices.

Consumer and Oil Price Watch Chair Raul Concepcion said, oil firms still owe us between 5 to 8 pesos more. If this is correct, then these oil firms should bring the prices of gasoline to just 41 pesos per liter while diesel should be between 38-40 per liter.

Now is the right time for the people to support these initiatives. These oil companies are robbing us of our monies in broad daylight. They should be reminded that, despite the deregulatory environment, they have the public responsibility to make the right and reasonable price offering.

Let's bring our collective bodies and minds together and resist this monstrosity being heaped against us. It is time to bring down these oil companies and this government who remains inutile to the plight of the people.

We can only save the Irish economy with your help. So please read on and register your interest today to join something very special and important. Together we can save Ireland from total ruin.

[caption id="attachment_21" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Only you can save Ireland!"][/caption]

IRELAND IS ON THE VERGE OF SELF DESTRUCTION

Ireland is in recession. There are billions of euros of debt and banks are on the verge of going out of business. Property has become worthless and will continue to do so. Unemployment will soar, suicide will increase and poverty will strike all classes in the years to come. Ireland is uncompetitive and is a wasteful declining state. Ireland is no place for the young nor the old and things will only get worse unless you take action so read on and register your interest in helping the country survive. Protect your family and friends; just don’t sit back, you must take action.

If you think things are bad now be prepared for a shock for many years to come. Economically, Ireland is finished! This is not sensationalism, this is FACT!

HOW IRELAND CAN BE SAVED

Ireland has the ability to become one of the wealthiest self sustaining countries in the world. We are often jealous of the Arabs with their control of natural resources, such as oil and gas, worth billions of euros.

As the Norwegian government, Shell, Statoil etc have a laugh at our expense we realise that we gave away billions of euros of our most valuable export potential. The only way that Ireland can be saved from total ruin is for the Irish nation to unite together to win back the rights that our forefathers died fighting for.

SAVE IRELAND TODAY AND REGISTER YOUR INTEREST AND SUPPORT HERE! THIS IS THE ONLY WAY THAT THE IRISH ECONOMY CAN BE SAVED FROM TOTAL RUIN.

HOW YOU CAN SAVE IRELAND

This plan to save Ireland from total economic ruin will work. We guarantee you that this is the solution for Ireland so help us make it happen. Our aim is not to create another market based bubble but to create a sustainable economy based on the export of our fosil fuels and the free supply of heat and power through renewable energy. We have billions (or potentially trillions) worth of export potential and we have the best conditions for renewable energy in Europe so lets all unite together to make this happen. You must take part to make it happen; don't wait for others to join this.

Register your interest now, you must do this to save Ireland.

Today I logged in a machine I don't want to install anything on it, but I wanted to find a machine in its network.
I came up with the little shell script that scans the subnet:

[sourcecode language="php"]
CURR=1
SUBNET="192.168.0"

while [ $CURR -lt 255 ] ; do
ping -c1 -t1 $SUBNET.$CURR 2>&1 >/dev/null
if [ "$?" -eq "0" ]; then
echo "$SUBNET.$CURR"
fi
let CURR=$CURR+1
done
[/sourcecode]

This script is suboptimal but it does the stuff: It uses ping with a timeout of 1 sec, so If no machine is up, the script takes around 255 seconds to scan the subnet, it doesn't list the machines that doesn't reply to ping and so on ... but as I said it , it does the stuff.

I tested this script in Linux and OSX.

On Fedora systems the run level configuration of system services can easily be done via the gui tool
system-config-services
. However, in case there is no X installed this can also be done by the command line tool
chkconfig
:
[sourcecode language='css']
# chkconfig --list|grep httpd
httpd 0:Aus 1:Aus 2:Aus 3:Aus 4:Aus 5:Aus 6:Aus
# chkconfig --level 345 httpd on
# chkconfig --list|grep httpd
httpd 0:Aus 1:Aus 2:Aus 3:Ein 4:Ein 5:Ein 6:Aus
# chkconfig --level 345 httpd off
# chkconfig --list|grep httpd
httpd 0:Aus 1:Aus 2:Aus 3:Aus 4:Aus 5:Aus 6:Aus
[/sourcecode]
This works also on Mandriva and Opensuse. On Ubuntu, which is Debian based, there is a similar tool available,
sysv-rc-conf
:
[sourcecode language='css']
# sysv-rc-conf --list|grep cups
cupsys 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off
# sysv-rc-conf --level 345 cupsys on
# sysv-rc-conf --list|grep cups
cupsys 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on
[/sourcecode]
Of course on all systems you can still manually create symlinks to control the start and stop times of the services.

Royal Dutch Shell management must have a brighter outlook than most corporations. Equities are fal

Royal Dutch Shell management must have a brighter outlook than most corporations. Equities are falling and many expect oil companies to be most affected by the fall in demand for oil and the falling price of crude. But in a rare sign of confidence, Shell management continues its program of buying back shares. On Friday it bought 465,000 "B" Shares* at a price of 1538.14 pence per share.

Share buybacks are when a company buys and then cancels its own shares either through a tender offer or on the markets. Buybacks reduce the total dividend payout, reduce the risk of a takeover and increase earnings per share (EPS), but they give the impression that a firm has more cash than it can comfortably invest. It may also imply that management has run out of better ways to increase EPS.

The dividend payout is an interesting aspect. Normally, companies with high dividend payouts provide the highest return, not just because of the dividend but because of increased investor confidence in future growth. High dividend payouts imply a bull market, this London Times article states that between 1997 and 2007, companies which increased dividend payouts gave a 12.7% return per year. Companies with buyback plans returned just 8.2%.

The only years in which buyback companies provided higher returns were 1997, 2001 and 2002. What do those years have in common with 2008? An intense bear market.

When the bear market ends, Shell will have a strong balance sheet with which to borrow debt at a cheaper rate. This debt will have lower tax payments and the cost of interest may be less than the cost of dividends.

Usually money spent on buybacks means less money spent on research and development or asset investment. But a buyback can be considered an investment in the company's future financial stability. Depending on future performance and the markets, It will be interesting to find out which is the case for Shell.

*RDS has two classes of shares: 'A' and 'B'. Unlike tracking shares which are responsible for different divisions of a company, Shell's dual stock system exists only to provide dividends in different currencies. When Royal Dutch, a Dutch company, merged with British Shell, RD shareholders were issued class A shares in Royal Dutch Shell, which pay dividends in Euros and Shell shareholders were issued class B shares, paying dividends in Sterling.

The Terminal.

To start out this post I’m going to pose a simple question. What can you do fas

The Terminal.

To start out this post I'm going to pose a simple question. What can you do faster, type out ten words on your keyboard or click 10 different icons spread around your desktop. Most people when intially posed this question respond that clicking is faster. This may be the case if the icons are really close and you don't know how to type, but as soon as you have very basic typing skills it becomes much easier to type commands then to perform a visual search, followed by moving and then clicking a mouse.

If you know what your doing you can almost always perform the task many times more quickly and efficiently in the terminal. In fact you will eventually learn that there are many things that can really only be accomplished in a terminal. The terminal like most things in linux isn't designed to be easy to learn, but easy to use. The learning curve is steep but once you've reached the top you'll be doing thins faster and more efficiently then you ever could using the GUI.

What is a terminal?

A terminal is an application that lets you control or interact with your computer using a shell. Shells are basic programs that interact with the operating system of your computer. I don't want to get much more deep then that; however, if you want to know more the wikipedia articles are great. There are several terminal programs: Konsole, Terminal, XTerm. I will be using Terminal exclusively. Also there are several types of shells, each with a different set of commands. Like most modern linux distributions Ubuntu ships with Bash but there are several different shells that can be installed if you like.

So I've opened a terminal now what?

With a terminal open you should see something like: username@computername:~$. The ~ says that you're in your home directory and the $ sign means that the shell is waiting for commands. If you're familiar with DOS ~$ is like C:Documents and Settings/User_Name/. Think about you computer as a tree. The root of the tree is / with directories as branches and files as leaves. A branch can have sub branches but leaves cannot. A leaf is the end node and can have nothing attached to it. Your terminal is like a monkey sitting on a branch. The monkey can climb up branches, climb down branches, or do something to the leaves. You can like this monkey climb around your file-system like its a tree.

Basic Commands:

I am not going to provde a comprehensive list of commands but rather go over several commands that I use regularly:

ls list the contents of your current directory, like DIR but better

cd <dir> change directory to dir, dir must be a subfolder of where you are currently located

cd .. change directory, go up one directory, if you are located in /home/user/Folder cd .. will put you in /home/user/, note the space between cd and ..

cp <src> <dest> Copy what is at src to dest, when copying folders include -r to recursively include the folder contents

mv <src> <dest> Move what is at src to des, when moving folders all contents will be move automatically

sudo <username> <command> Switch User DO, executes a command as another user, <username> can be ommited and the root user will be assumed

. a period is the shortcut for where you currently are. If you are located in /home/user/dir1/dir2/dir3 typing cp -r /home/user/data/ . will recursively copy all of /home/user/data to /home/dir1/dir2/dir3/data

~ this is a shortcut for /home/<username>/ use can use it in almost any command like

For a great list of possible commands check out: http://www.ss64.com/bash/ It's hardly comprehensive but it is a good start.

Doing more with Basic Commands:

You may have noticed the -r I added to the cp command. Most commands can take options which are either a letter after a - or a word after --. To see what different options are available for a command you can read the man page (manual) for that command by typing: man <command> or you can see the help prompt by typing: <command> -h or <command> --help. Most commands can take one or many command line options allowing for some really powerful commands. These commands are what make the terminal such a powerful tool that take it way beyond anything you could do with a GUI.

Problem

You find yourself standing outside of a perfect maze. A maze is defined as "perfect" if it meets the following conditions:

It is a rectangular grid of rooms, R rows by C columns.

There are exactly two openings on the outside of the maze: the entrance and the exit. The entrance is always on the north wall, while the exit could be on any wall.

There is exactly one path between any two rooms in the maze (that is, exactly one path that does not involve backtracking).

You decide to solve the perfect maze using the "always turn left" algorithm, which states that you take the leftmost fork at every opportunity. If you hit a dead end, you turn right twice (180 degrees clockwise) and continue. (If you were to stick out your left arm and touch the wall while following this algorithm, you'd solve the maze without ever breaking contact with the wall.) Once you finish the maze, you decide to go the extra step and solve it again (still always turning left), but starting at the exit and finishing at the entrance.

The path you take through the maze can be described with three characters: 'W' means to walk forward into the next room, 'L' means to turn left (or counterclockwise) 90 degrees, and 'R' means to turn right (or clockwise) 90 degrees. You begin outside the maze, immediately adjacent to the entrance, facing the maze. You finish when you have stepped outside the maze through the exit. For example, if the entrance is on the north and the exit is on the west, your path through the following maze would be
WRWWLWWLWWLWLWRRWRWWWRWWRWLW
:

If the entrance and exit were reversed such that you began outside the west wall and finished out the north wall, your path would be
WWRRWLWLWWLWWLWWRWWRWWLW
. Given your two paths through the maze (entrance to exit and exit to entrance), your code should return a description of the maze.

Qui bisogna inserire nome dell'interfacia, indirizzo ip, mask e gateway.

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:d0:59:94:f0:97

Vediamo come:

NB tutti i comandi seguenti vanno lanciati come root.

Alziamo l'interfaccia di rete ethernet

ifconfig eth0 up

configuriamo il suo indirizzo

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.54 netmask 255.255.255.0

ed aggiungiamo il gateway

ifconfig eth0 gw 192.168.1.1

Ovviamente possiamo fare tutto insieme:

ifconfig eth0 up eth0 192.168.1.54 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.1.1

route add default eth0

E questo è quanto.

Big Stone Beach, Milford, Delaware

Upper 40s, no wind, and for a change, no mist.

My favorite part of sunrise isn't the actual sunrise, it's the moment just before the sun begins to peek over the horizon, when the sky is glowing where the sun is about to appear.

Pretty sure that's the same helicopter guy from the other day, only I'm about 2 1/2 miles south from where I saw him before. My favorite helicopter expert says it looks like a Bell 47.

I'm guessing all the cinder blocks are the remnants of the foundation from the house in the foreground, although the way they're scattered all down the beach as far as I can see in both directions, they could be from anywhere.
