999,999

1,000,000

Letting You

Discipline

March of the Pigs

Piggy

The Frail

The Wretched

Head Down

Closer

Gave Up

Corona Radiata

The Warning

Vessel

Pinion

Wish

Terrible Lie

Survivalism

The Big Come Down

31 Ghosts IV

Only

The Hand That Feeds

Head Like a Hole

Echoplex

Reptile

God Given

Hurt

In This Twilight

Zero sum

The computer mouse is one technology that has had far-reaching effects upon the way that human beings interact with electronic displays. Invented in 1968 by Douglas Engelbert, the humble computer mouse changed the way that people interacted with electronic displays. Prior to this invention, interaction with electronic data was largely text-based, either using a keyboard or punchcards or other modes of feeding text based input to a computer, and receiving text-based or perhaps even graphical output on a screen or on a printout. The invention of the mouse was radical in that it allowed for the graphical manipulation of onscreen data. The mouse helped to concretize the screen as a physical space imbued with dimension.

When I use a mouse (or its more modern successor, the touchpad), I am interacting with data in a completely different way than I would have with a command line interface. For instance, I can sort jpg images on my computer using the drag and drop function. I can make a folder and drag and drop all my "Vacation Pictures" into that folder, and put my "Birthday Pictures" in another, just as if I were sorting a set of prints into two separate piles. I could do something similar with a command line interface, but it would take much longer and be much less efficient. The ability to treat the screen as if it were real space with real dimensions goes far beyond this though. When I use the computer I have many different windows open at one time, and am engaging in many different activities. In one set of windows I might be doing some research, and in another I might be sending an IM to a friend. On my MacBook I can organize those different activities by keeping them in separate "Spaces" which I can access by using specific symbolic mouse gestures. I can organize all my various trains of thoughts by organizing the representations of those trains of thought using an onscreen spatial metaphor which is enabled by the use of a mouse. The possibilities seem endless, and this is just one example of the ways in which the mouse has influenced computer technology as a means of graphical manipulation of and interaction with data.

Traditional flat-screen televisions could soon become a thing of the past, as scientists have reveal

Traditional flat-screen televisions could soon become a thing of the past, as scientists have revealed an ultra-thin, flexible screen that could fold up and fit in your pocket.

The bendy screens - less than a millimetre thick - could be used for televisions, computers and phones, and may pave the way for easy-to-carry digital newspaper displays, which readers could upload their news on to daily.

Some speculate that the technology could even lead to wearable TV jackets, flexible laptop screens, and TV blankets.

Sony worked with researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Germany to create the design. They say it is flexible and transparent, and has an extremely low energy requirement, allowing laptop and phone batteries to last longer.

The screens are made up of organic molecules that emit light in all directions to produce an image, which gives an almost infinite viewing angle.

Stacking up the transparent screens may produce 3D effects, the scientists say.

Other possibilities include moving images on posters, like those seen in films such as Minority Report, and talking pictures on cereal boxes.

The researchers told the Journal of Physics: 'The displays have excellent brightness and are transparent, bendable and flexible.

'There are practically no display size limitations and they could be produced relatively easily and cheaply compared to today's screens.'

An earlier version of the work was demonstrated by Sony in 2006, but technical and design issues stopped it from being mass produced.

There are so many different social networks and they all require separate logins, passwords, etc... I used to be able to keep track of it all, but now I find myself stumbling at the password screen. Another issue that really bothers me is when I receive the inevitable email that says, "someone sent you a new message. To read or reply to the full message, go to..." Why can't they just forward the message? Because the social sites are supported by ad revenue. That's also why no one (that I know of anyway) has developed a front-end application to tie every network and blog together into one convenient package. If that were to happen, there would be a lot of busy attorneys in Silicon Valley (not that there aren't already).

King's in NYC to an Elvis wedding chapel on the Las Vegas shimmering strip, human beings are drawn to the act of imitation. And who doesn't like an impersonator? It was W. Wotton who said, "Man is, of all creatures, the most mimical." Supposedly, it is also the best form of a compliment.

Compliment or not, what really lies behind the mask of impersonation? This is the focus for Harmony Korine's 2007 film, Mister Lonely. Diego Luna plays a Michael Jackson impersonator who, during a show at a local nursing home meets Marilyn Monroe and is instantly enamored. So much, in fact, that he joins her, James Dean, Charlie Chaplin, and the Queen of England (to name a few) in a commune "where everyone is famous". The hodgepodge of characters decide to build a performance in hopes the world will come to see, and it is here that reality jades their utopian fantasy.

The film acquired ambiguous reviews so it's left to the viewer to decide for themselves.

Last week, a soul commented one of my blogposts with just one word: LEIWAND.

At first, I thought the author had had another beer in some place with his people and that he felt like writing some poetry. He could have meant LEINWAND (German word for movie theater screen), forgetting the first N. I scratched my head trying to find an answer all by myself. Then, Mr Google tapped slightly on my shoulder: 'Girl, why don't you ask me? Maybe I can help!'

Effectively, he could. LEIWAND comes from the Vienna (Austria) slang. It is said that it was used originally by the bad boys, who, after having robbed successfully a bank or two, said: 'Leiwand', meaning : "Full success, guys. All's well that ends well. We could carry out our plan. Just as scripted. We are rich now. Let's go to the French Riviera and be tycoons".

LEIWAND means : 'Great, wonderful.' In other words, the commentator enjoys reading my stories. He himself is a newbie to blogging. He is still looking for the right button to press on. But if you feel comfortable with German, follow the sign > Campare50.

Variations on a Cellophane Wrapper - dir David Rimmer
- I couldn't find a clip of the film, but here are some informational links if you want to learn more

Pièce Touchée - dir Martin Arnold

"pièce touchée, Martin Arnold, Austria,16mm Film, b&w, 16 min
Arnold's breakthrough film, pièce touchée, is based on a single 18-second shot from The Human Jungle (dir. Joseph M. Newman, 1954). Woman sitting in a chair. Man enters the room. Man and woman kiss. Exit man."
- from the YouTube description

- this is only half of the film as a whole - could only get the first 9 minutes of the piece from YouTube

personal notes:

- b/w film - opens with a woman sitting on a chair in a living room reading a newspaper
- humming / mechanical noise overlay
- repetitive film - no movement at all other than fingers and head
- starts with only one frame then slowly builds up with the number of frames
- back and forth with forward and backward movement of the frames as the man enters the room
- mirroring imagery from left to right = cool effect on the eyes
- her head appears to swivel a complete 360 as the scene repeats and mirrors itself
- the man goes down and kisses the woman finally
- various editing techniques follow to the end...

in-class round table discussion:

- motion study / repetitive motion study
- changes of planes / changes of perception
- disorientation and uncomfortable
- dealt with time - kept revisiting and repeating frames
- absurdity of everyday domestic scene
- sound was mechanic humming
- story interpretation of repetition
- negation of story narrative
- metaphor / felt like we were inside a washing machine
- creation of new images using existing frames / transformation
- underlying issues of domesticity (violence / sexuality)
- issues of dominance, power and gender
- introduction of new editing techniques
- abstraction of shapes and creation of negative space
- interesting effects of animation (head spinning / rotating)
- soundtrack gives a dehumanized / mechanized theme to the piece (lack of humanity)
- unexpected editing techniques (reversals, mirrors, motion, movement)
- Experimental / Found Footage film piece
- too long? too repetitive? (was it intended?)
- no finality at the end - felt incomplete - where did it end? what does it mean?
- resolution irrelevant - it is an experimental film by nature
- A Touching Piece / Touched Piece - what does the title actually refer to?
- critique of cinema / society at the time (Hollywood system and view of society)
- expanded cinema (new term for avant-garde / experimental / innovative)

"Une vieille maîtresse" or "The Last Mistress" portrays a captivating view on infidelity and the peril that passion inevitably brings. It is by far one of the sexiest movies I have set my eyes upon in quite some time. The french film is quite lengthy, but sultry scenes and the french language itself pulls you through to the end. When the lights come up you are left with your mind floating in steamy clouds and perhaps for some, you walk away with a certain (unspoken) feeling in your pants.

"This American life" began as a radio show in 1995 and 13 years later is still going strong. Ira Glass is the shows host, both on the radio and on the New! television show aired on Showtime. It's the hyperbole of true stories and every day people that give the episodes their intrigue and utter hilarity. Check it out and get hooked. It's the cool thing to do.
