At long last we are proud to announce that the next generation of Universal Audio's much-loved plug-in platform is now here and shipping in the UK.

UAD2 boasts up to 10 times the DSP power of UAD1, some very exciting new plug-in partners, and extremely attractive upgrade offers. UAD2 prices start at just £399 inc VAT.

UAD2 comes in 3 different card types - Solo, Duo and Quad (this refers to the number of SHARC processors on the card). Solo has x2.5 the power of UAD1, Duo has x5 the power of UAD1, while Quad has a whopping x10 the power of UAD1.

Each card then has three associated package options: Core, Flexi and Nevana, making a total of 9 possible UAD2 packages.

The Base package provides the basic UA 'Mix Essentials II' plug-in selection (consisting of the 1176SE compressor, CS-1 channel strip, Pultec EQP-1A equaliser and Realverb Pro reverb) plus a $50 plug-in voucher. This is the lowest cost UAD2 option and is ideal for existing UAD1 users who have sufficient plug-ins and just need extra DSP power.

The Flexi package provides the same Mix Essentials II selection plus a $500 plug-in voucher, allowing customers to enjoy extra power and acquire more plug-ins.

Finally, the Nevana packages provide Mix Essentials II plus key UA Neve plug-ins, allowing the user to create his own virtual Neve console of 32, 64 or 128 channels!

New UA plug-in partners include Valley People, Empirical Labs, Moog, Harrison and Little Labs, which join UA's already impressive partner list of Boss, Helios, Neve, Roland, SPL, Fairchild and Pultec.

Customers can run UAD1 and UAD2 concurrently, and for a limited period the following crossgrade promos are available:

All existing UAD1 users can crossgrade ALL their authorised plug-ins to UAD2 completely FREE of charge until the end of 2008, and secondly registered UAD1 owners will also be rewarded with bonus UAD$ vouchers up to $250 for each registration of a UAD2 card before the end of the year. Additionally, UA's existing $150 promo will continue until the end of September, so customers can bag themselves an extra voucher if they move fast!

UAD2 is PCIe only, and of the current UAD1 range all products will continue unchanged except UAD1Ultra (which is PCI), UAD1E Expert, UAD1E Extreme and UAD-NevanaX2 (all of which are PCIe).

All UAD-2 Formats Are Now Available from Dolphin Music

For The Qemists, there’s just one way to get that killer sound – a pair of Liquid Mixes and the ISA 430…

The Qemists’ Dan & Liam.jpg

For Brighton-based production trio The Qemists, rocking the dancefloor is simply a question of creating massive, peak-time bombs… and their secret weapons of choice? Focusrite’s Liquid Mix and the ISA 430: “Focusrite have an immense reputation for high fidelity products.”

So says Liam Black, one-third of The Qemists – Drum & Bass production outfit for the legendary Ninja Tune label. They may have started out as a traditional rock band over a decade ago, but a mutual love for the exploding Drum & Bass scene of the late 90s has seen our production trio become renowned for tearing up dancefloors the world over with their three-man, 2-deck, 2-laptop set-up.

These guys know just about everything there is about getting big sound – how else do you get to live-engineer the likes of Basement Jaxx, Kano and Lady Sovereign?

And from their Brighton-based studio they’ve remixed the likes of Coldcut, Cooper Temple Clause and Roots Manuva, while their tracks have garnered huge support from such heavyweights as Zane Lowe (Radio 1), Andy C and Pendulum.

In the studio they need to be sure they’re getting the very best quality signals into their PC set-up, which is why you’ll find the legendary Focusrite ISA 430 Mk.II permanently strapped across the front end. “We needed a real workhorse for our recording setup – and what’s better than an ISA 430?” Liam suggests.

“We needed a really high quality channel strip for recording the live aspects of our album – guitars and vocals and the like… and this thing is the business – it makes cheap mics sound great and great mics sound just fantastic. But it’s not just the sound – the ISA 430’s routing capabilities are also really useful. To be able to switch the order of the processing is great – it’s amazingly versatile.

With those signals tracked to perfection, Liam turns his attention to the mixing process, and because their projects often contain around 100 tracks they reach for the Liquid Mix to process the more important parts within a song…

“We really needed more DSP, and Liquid Mix is the only thing out there that can emulate so many different modern and vintage compressor and EQ models for a sensible price. The Liquid Mixes are used as extra dynamics and EQ processing in our two PC-based production studios. It’s the quality that counts – if you use cheap EQ and compression on parts that sit high in the mix… well, that never works out particularly well, especially with vocals.”

“So not only do we have the Liquid Mix’s 32 channels of whatever vintage or modern EQ or Compression you can imagine, but there’s also the scope to make up your own processors from the best bits that you like. Really, what more could you want!?”

“So when we’re producing we’re now able to make sure that the real core elements of our songs can run through a huge choice of really high quality plug-ins. This in turn makes the whole mix process far less problematic – mainly because of the quality of the EQs and compressors, but also due to the fact that the computer isn’t taking quite as much of a hammering as it would do without the Liquid Mix!”

“We did some mixes at a top London Studio recently, and they had just about every bit of gear going. This was the first time we had experienced analogue gear on such a large scale. But ultimately we were amazed at just how close the Liquid Mix sounds when compared to the original hardware. But sometimes we thought the Liquid Mix sounded even better, especially in terms of background noise.”

Radiohead are currently on a world tour in support of their latest album entitled In Rainbows. For their very intricate live shows the band and their technician, Russ Russell, have turned to Kontakt 3.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Radiohead Live"][/caption]

Russ's workplace comprises of an Apple Macbook Pro that sits on a rack of daisy-chained audio interfaces. The computer receives MIDI from two keyboard stations on the stage, operated by band members (and brothers) Jonny and Colin Greenwood. They play their parts on their respective controller keyboards and MIDI floorboards.

On his computer, Russ runs Kontakt 3 as the main instrument for all sample-based sounds in the show. Both keyboard stations are routed to Kontakt, with each song having its own monolithic multi. "Kontakt is great to work with", says Russ. "It has allowed us to completely get away from all the frustration of hardware samplers. Editing and importing becomes quicker and easier, which allows the band to make changes or try new ideas without delay or fuss."

Russ switched Radiohead's setup to Kontakt during the preparation for the 2008 world tour. "The band wanted to replace some old hardware from previous tours and consolidate those sounds into one central system.

For the live versions of the songs on 'In Rainbows', I worked with Kontakt. I used material from the studio production, and I also adapted some sounds from the Kontakt library - the Crumar Orchestrator gets quite a bit of use. After that, I basically went through the entire Radiohead catalogue and converted all the old sample material for Kontakt. I sampled a few hardware instruments and created multisamples. It's just made the organisation of all the keyboard sounds so much easier."

During the show, Radiohead play all songs entirely live - no backing tracks or sequencers are used except for songs with a more electronic aesthetics, such as "15 Step", where synchronised percussive loops are triggered in real time by Colin and Jonny. In addition to playing sounds on Russ's computer via his controller, guitar and keyboard player Jonny Greenwood operates a mixture of analog devices and his own laptop. During the show, Jonny manipulates the synths and outboard devices by hand and foot.

Bass player Colin Greenwood uses more of a conventional setup for his keyboard parts, comprising a controller keyboard and floorboard. All the changes in sound selections during or in between songs are operated directly by Russ, including some sounds from Pro-53 and other software synthesizers. Learn more about the amazing Kontakt 3 Software Sampler here

Creating Professional Music is something that is essential in the Music Business because of the amount of producers in the industry, the industry is a fast growing industry with new producers coming out everyday.

Music Production is something that producers all have to master to create quality music;
* Beat Creation: picking sounds for a kit, grid & manual tick editing, ghost notes, stereo field sound placement, layering, sample management, using dynamics & efx, dynamic playing via velocity templates
* Quantise: understanding and manipulating quantise, extracting grooves from audio & midi material, creating custom quantise templates, understanding swing, getting that perfect timing in your beats.
* Sample Manipulation: determine the key of a sample or song using spectrum analysers, old school key matching techniques, manipulating key, time stretching/compressing, slicing techniques for drums and instrument phrases.
* Dynamics and Effects: compression, parallel compression (New York), stereo widening techniques, EQ, reverb/chorus, filtering redundant frequencies.
* Polishing the mix: understanding sample management, multi format audio exports, grouping and soloing for mixing/production.

Creating Professional Music takes time however it can be mastered - Fruity Loops, Reason, Pro Tools & Logic Pro are the music industries favourite music production software tools for music production. You can find these music production software packages on their website - search on google.

I conclude this by saying - Learn how to create professional music before going to release. Be better than the rest because it is a hard industry to break into, just like the fashion industry a new producer comes out everyday so you need to be on top of your game.

Starting a career in music production is something that has to be mastered and has to be taught. You cannot be naturally born knowing everything, knowledge and power in the world is taught to you and I am going to tell you many ways you can learn how to build a career in music production.

Music Production is where all the fun begins, using Music Production Hardware is all part of it but generally speaking I am going to use the term Music Production Software;
You will need this to create your music, and however you may start learning (through fruity loops, reason etc) but ultimately you will need to end up using industry standard music production software such as Pro Tools or Logic Pro. This will give you the freedom to move around different record studios.

The Music Production Equipment you use is just as important as the music software. Your production equipment could be your midi keyboard, microphone, digital keyboard (Triton, Yamaha etc), mixing desk, audio interface or many other different types of equipment.

Building up your knowledge for a career in Music Production is critical, learning from online Music Production Tutorials is a great way of building your musicial knowledge. They will give you everything you need to know production wise, you will be learning some of the same production methods as many established producers.
Anyone that may be more advanced than you get Music Production Tips from, it's always good to learn and take on advice.

For more information visit - http://www.musicproducerpro.net

Much of the plan on computer music has fatigued on the accord amid music approach and mathematics. The world's aboriginal computer to play music was CSIRAC which was advised and congenital by Trevor Pearcey and Maston Beard. Mathematician Geoff Hill programmed the CSIRAC to play accepted agreeable melodies from the actual aboriginal 1950s. In 1951 it about played the Colonel Bogey March[1] of which no accepted recordings exist. However, CSIRAC played accepted repertoire and was not acclimated to extend agreeable cerebration or agreement convenance which is accepted computer music practice.

The oldest accepted recordings of computer generated music were played by the Ferranti Mark I computer, a bartering adaptation of the Baby Apparatus from the University of Manchester in the autumn of 1951. The music affairs was accounting by Christopher Strachey. During a affair recorded by the BBC, the apparatus managed to plan its way through Baa Baa Black Sheep, God Save the King and allotment of In the Mood[2]. Subsequently, Lejaren Hiller (e.g., the Illiac Suite) acclimated a computer in the mid 1950s to compose works that were again played by accepted musicians. Later developments included the plan of Max Mathews at Bell Laboratories, who developed the affecting MUSIC I program. Vocoder technology was aswell a above development in this aboriginal era.

Early computer music programs about did not run in real-time. Programs would run for hours or days, on multi-million dollar computers, in adjustment to accomplish a few account of music. John Chowning's plan on FM synthesis, in the aboriginal 70s, and the appearance of bargain agenda chips and microcomputers opened the aperture to real-time bearing of computer music. By the aboriginal 90s, the achievement of microprocessor-based computers accomplished the point that real-time bearing of computer music application added accepted programs and algorithms became possible.

At the time of this writing, Finale 2009 has shipped and Sibelius is on version 5. I have both, but I am tending toward Finale at this time, and here is why. Sibelius has been bought by Avid Corp. which is also the owner of Pro Tools®, and now Sibelius is, in fact, the notation module for Pro Tools. Nothing against Pro Tools, (and I think it is a great app. for recording) but I just don't see Avid as caring a great deal about notational excellence. As if evidence of that statement were required, Sib. v.5 still has a couple bugs that I was griping about since at least v.2. So, I have gone back to using Finale on all my new projects.

The J. River Media Jukebox is a stripped-down but free version of the popular J. River Media Center.

The J. River Media Jukebox is a stripped-down but free version of the popular J. River Media Center. Popular in its own right, Media Jukebox uses the same interface as its big brother to deliver a feature set that's anything but little, but strictly limited to music support. Those in search of video and image compatibility will need to download the Media Center.

The program mimics the iTunes interface in a way that could benefit from more inspiration, but it doesn't stop the extras from shining through. You'll be able to burn and rip CDs, sync with just about any portable including iPods, tag tracks, and convert files to several popular formats. It has browser support, letting you buy music from Amazon and plug-ins for several services including Last.fm so you can find new music based on your taste. You also have your choice of skins you can download to give your player a new look. Playlists are also supported.

Former problems with encoding have been largely taken care of. Strangely, instead of providing access to CDDB, Media Jukebox uses a proprietary database that works fine with commercial CDs, but not quite as well with backup or free-floating copies. Database crashes are largely a thing of the past, and we didn't encounter any with the latest release. Many limitations get freed in the Media Center, including plug-in support, and TV recording. The forced start after installing was annoying, though not problematic.

FLV Player is a tool to play Flash FLV and H.264 (MPEG-4) videos with. This utility can come in handy when viewing many FLV and/or H.264 files, as it doesn't require the Adobe Flash IDE. The installer comes with optional FLV file-association, so double clicking an FLV file opens and plays the file in FLV Player. Version 2.0.24 adds support for the newly added H.264 (MPEG-4) format in the Adobe Flash Player and fixes bugs.

Incredibly easy and fun to use, ZFX combines sophisticated amp modeling software with a USB audio interface. With exceptionally accurate models of music's most legendary amps, cabinets and effects, ZFX puts an impressive library a mere mouse click away. ZFX provides 12 classic guitar amps, 5 amazing bass amps, 16 cabinets, 4 types of recording mics and 41 stomp box effects.ZFX comes with your choice of audio interfaces, either the Stack Package with the S2t or the Control Package with the C5.1t.The S2t USB audio interface is specifically designed for the needs of guitarists. Its cool, amp head design means the S2t looks great on your desktop. Connect guitars, basses, vocal mics or keyboards and get high quality, 24-bit/48 kHz recording resolution. And since it's USB bus powered, an external power supply is not necessary.

The C5.1t USB floor console features an expression pedal and five function switches. Not only does the expression pedal handle regular effect control functions such as volume, wah or pitch shift, it can also be used to adjust modulation rate or reverb mix level in real time. The five assignable switches can be used to turn effects on/off, toggle patches, perform tap tempo input, activate bypass mode and more. Each interface has a Hi-Z input section that features a 12AX7 tube, the classic guitar preamp tube. Blending the clarity of solid-state sound with the natural compression and saturation of a vacuum tube creates a warm, organic tone that only comes from ZFX interfaces.ZFX also comes with Cubase LE 4, a powerful music production system that can handle recording, editing, and mixing tasks both for audio and for MIDI. It incorporates the same audio engine as the multi-award winning, higher-level version Cubase 4, and is ideal as an entry into computer-based music production. VST plug-in support means that you can get started right away, creating amazing tones to record your guitar or bass. The ZFX packages are fun and easy to operate, and will provide an incredible introduction into the world of computer based guitar recording.

Some time ago I went plugin happy. Actually it was more plugin mad. I trolled through sites like VST

Some time ago I went plugin happy. Actually it was more plugin mad. I trolled through sites like VST Planet and Audio Mastermind searching for the elusive plugin that would make my recordings sparkle. Just the faint promise of breathing life into the guitars, or polishing the vocals was enough to sell me. Soon my plugin folder was awash with oddly named effects that rarely did anything discernible. Most I never use, but I was comforted by the thought that I could if I wanted to.

The tyranny of choice. That’s what it comes down to. I played around in a local music shop with a Line6 Pod and was struck by the number of combinations available. With 32 amps and 60+ effects that is over 1920 distinct combinations. It would take quite a while to plough through them all. Pretty soon you’re not playing, but rather playing around, trying to settle on the right sound.

If I had to offer advice to those who are looking to jump into the effect market to tweak their music it would be this: Think of how you want to sound first, then limit your choices to put you in that direction. Good recording and good production may dupe people briefly into liking what is otherwise flat material. One can spend great amounts of time getting the right sound to liven up that which is flawed by bad playing, recording, composition, expression, or whatever. The audience is infinitely more forgiving of sonically imperfect experiences than we are apt to believe, provided the performer can entertain that is.

So forget the giant multi-effect boxes with their plethora of distraction. Instead polish what you have. Learn to compose a song that will stand on its own, without the aid of high production value. Learn how to perform in a way that is expressive without the use of an expression pedal. You will waste less time flipping through presets and twisting knobs, focusing so intently on the quality of your sound, and will spend more time focusing on the quality of your music.
