The remnants of Gustav have been slowly drifting off to the north for the past few days and with that it's brought us wind, mist, and some significantly cooler temperatures. I think it caught us all off guard, and even next week it's forecast to be cooler, around 90 for most of the week. The end of summer is upon us, cooler weather is soon to arrive and I don't have a coat or jacket at the moment, some planner I am.

Today was the first day of class for me and started like they all will, with organic chemistry and end with some research or lab work in the afternoon. I think I'll really enjoy psychology for a myriad of reasons but mostly because I think the coupled system of the brain and the mind is a truly fascinating entity: the conglomeration of the physical and the phantom and how it reaches out to the rest of the world, how we interact with other humans and why we do the things we do is of much wonderment to me.

Calculus II is a calculus class, it's as simple as that.

Every now and then I get this feeling I'm filled with doom, gloom and that the future is dank and dark, depressing and hopeless, it's a nuisance especially because I have needs and desires that conflict with these foreboding omens.

"How does it look?" Miranda Stone asked in a soft tone, seating herself at the wooden table she and her husband had brought with them from out west. Vincent Stone gave his wife a glowing smile as he twisted a forkful of noodles around upon his plate.

"It smells great, if that helps," He offered and Miranda was pleased enough, sitting down to eat beside him. They were quiet for some time, the silence filled only by chewing and the clatter of silverware against their dishes. Finally, clearing his throat, leaning forwards in his chair a bit, Vincent broke the silence. "You think we can be happy here?"

Miranda gave him a smile. "Yes," She answered in a tone that sounded with complete assurance. "I'm sure of it." She was his rock, his sense of security when things were falling apart around them. What had Vincent done to deserve such a wonderful woman? Her answer brought a little smile to his features, letting out a little sigh of relief. Two years she had stood firmly at his side before he managed to get the courage to ask her for her hand. Her response had been, "Well, took you long enough!" which was good enough for the both of them. They meant to make a life and, while there had been a few curve balls thrown their direction, Vincent knew he could weather the storms that lay ahead of him.

"Nah, we'll be just fine here," Miranda reaffirmed and, slipping her hand over his on the table, Vincent gave a smile in return. "I think we can trust the Rosier's to make the right choices and I'm sure your voice will be heard here more than it would've back home."

"I have to hope so," Vincent muttered. There wasn't much power in his line-- a few special tricks here and there but nothing compared to the wealth of power and might that he knew the three strongest families held. His lack of ability had always held him back but, with the gentle hand of Miranda upon his shoulder, urging him onwards, he had slowly begun to stand up a little taller in this world.

With just a bit more helpful pushing, he'd stand taller than ever and it was all because of Miranda. And, for that, he would always be grateful.

Al señor Alejandro Martí, los medios lo captaron a las afueras del hotel Sheraton, en la avenida Juárez, causando un tumulto. En respuesta, los asistentes lanzaron reproches contra la prensa.

El caso Martí fue uno de los principales motivos por los que se convocó a la marcha. El hijo del empresario deportivo, el niño Fernando Martí, fue secuestrado y asesinado por sus plagiarios.

Laura Elena Herrejón, otra de las convocantes a Iluminemos México, también estuvo presente en la manifestación.

Alfonso Otero, presidente de la Asociación de Industriales de Tlalnepantla, también asistió.

A quien no le fue muy bien, fue al Secretario de Seguridad Pública del Distrito Federal:

pues cuando se presentó para "saludar" en el Ángel de la Independencia fue abucheado.

Alfredo Hernández, subsecretario de Seguridad Pública del Distrito Federal, marchó, pero no fue abucheado, pues su imagen es menos conocida.

Uno que sí es conocido, es el presidente del Consejo Ciudadano para la Seguridad y la Justicia Penal, el abogado José Antonio Ortega, quien repitió asistencia, pues durante la marcha del 2004 que también convocó México Unido Contra la Delincuencia.

Una mujer emblemática en la lucha contra la inseguridad, la señora:

Isabel Miranda de Wallace

reiteró su causa. Su hijo, Hugo Wallace, fue asesinado tras ser secuestrado, por lo que su madre, investigó y les entregó, prácticamente, a algunos de los responsables.

Sin embargo, no sólo personalidad es marcharon y alzaron la voz contra la inseguridad, la marcha la hicieron los miles de ciudadanos que pintaron de blanco el reclamo.

Miranda busca mais uma chance na seleção

Sem idade olímpica, Miranda sequer cogitou ser chamado para defender a seleção brasileira em Pequim. Mas nutriu esperanças de ser lembrado pelo técnico Dunga para os jogos contra Chile e Bolívia, pelas eliminatórias para a Copa de 2010, mas não foi desta vez. O que o zagueiro do São Paulo sabe é que seu objetivo é estar no Mundial, que será realizado na África do Sul.

- Minha meta é estar na próxima Copa, e para isso queria entrar o quanto antes no grupo da seleção. Quando o professor Dunga achar que eu estou em condições de defender o Brasil deve me chamar - espera Miranda.

O zagueiro até brinca que se Muricy fosse o comandante do Brasil sua convocação seria mais fácil. Mas ele espera ser lembrado por Dunga novamente, pois já foi convocado pelo comandante uma vez, em agosto do ano passado, para um amistoso contra a Argélia.

- Seleção é opinião do treinador. Com certeza se fosse o Muricy minha chance seria grande porque ele conhece meu trabalho. Mas respeito a escolha do Dunga e vou trabalhar para ser chamado novamente - acrescenta o zagueiro, que se recuperou recentemente de uma lesão no joelho.

Kala itu, yang bersaing ketat dalam bursa calon pengganti Anwar Nasution adalah eks Deputi Gubernur Bank Indonesia Miranda Goeltom dan Kepala Kantor Perwakilan Bank Indonesia di Tokyo, Jepang, S. Budi Rochadi. Calon ketiga, Deputi Gubernur bank sentral, Hartadi Sarwono, tak terlampau diperhitungkan. Dua kandidat unggulan inilah yang saling adu kuat menarik dukungan dari parlemen.

Beberapa hari menjelang hari H pemilihan empat tahun lalu, sebuah pesan pendek masuk ke telepon reporter Tempo. ”Di Hilton 1301 sedang terjadi mo­ney politics untuk DGS BI (Deputi Gubernur Senior Bank Indonesia—Red.), agar mendukung satu calon tertentu,” demikian bunyi pesan itu. Pengirim pesan adalah pimpinan Komisi Ke­uangan Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat. Dia menuduh pertemuan di Hotel Hilton adalah bagian dari gerilya calon Deputi Gubernur Senior dalam mencari dukungan.

Mantan Ketua Kelompok Fraksi Reformasi di Komisi Keuangan, Hakam Naja, mengakui gencarnya pendekat­an dari tim sukses calon Deputi Gubernur Senior. Hakam bahkan mengaku pernah didekati seseorang yang mengaku sebagai utusan salah satu kandidat. ”Saya tidak kenal orangnya, tapi dia mengaku sebagai utusan Miranda,” kata politikus Partai Amanat Nasional ini pekan lalu. Hakam mengaku tak melayani desakan sang tamu.

Merasa tak mempan dengan umpan bujuk rayu, utusan itu lalu memasang jurus lain. Terang-terangan dia menawarkan suap Rp 500 juta sebagai imbal­an atas suara Hakam. Tawaran itu dia tolak mentah-mentah.

Soenmandjaja, politikus Fraksi PKS yang aktif di Komisi Keuangan Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat periode lalu, memberikan kesaksian senada. ”Mendekati hari pemilihan Deputi Gubernur Senior Bank Indonesia, selalu ada orang yang mendekati saya, bertanya bagaimana pandangan saya tentang para kandidat dan bagaimana nanti kecenderungan hasil voting,” katanya mengenang. Utusan para kandidat ini, menurut dia, tak selalu orang yang sama. ”Secara bergantian, mereka mencegat saya di lift, di ruang kerja, di mana saja,” kata Soenmandjaja—kini kandidat Bupati Bogor.

Sumber Tempo di legislatif berbisik bahwa salah satu ”utusan” yang dimaksud para anggota Dewan itu adalah adik kandung Miranda, Jonggi Goeltom. Pria paruh baya yang juga pengu­saha swasta ini dikenal dekat dengan ling­­karan petinggi partai politik. Kema­hirannya bermain golf membuatnya bisa bergaul erat dengan anggota ­parlemen.

Sumber Tempo lain memastikan, anggota Komisi Keuangan dan Perbankan Dewan yang menerima jatah ”uang terima kasih” Rp 500 juta bukan hanya Agus Condro seorang. Taruhlah 41 anggota parlemen yang memilih Miranda dalam pemilihan itu menerima dana itu, sedikitnya dibutuhkan Rp 20,5 miliar untuk memuluskan terpilihnya sang deputi.

Pemilihan pejabat Dewan Gubernur pekat beraroma bisnis. Keuntungan ­finansial menggiurkan menanti siapa pun yang bisa memiliki ”kaki tangan” di bank sentral. Kebijakan Bank Indonesia tentang tingkat suku bunga Sertifikat Bank Indonesia, misalnya, bisa menambah atau mengurangi margin keuntungan bank yang menyimpan dananya dalam bentuk surat berharga itu.

”Sebagai regulator, Bank Indonesia amat berkuasa,” kata satu sumber Tempo. Karena itu, tak akan sulit mencari pemilik bank yang bersedia menjadi sponsor pencalonan pejabat bank sentral. Sumber Tempo lain memastikan setiap pencalonan pejabat Dewan Gubernur Bank Indonesia tak pernah lepas dari gelontoran duit para cukong ini. Cek perjalanan Rp 500 juta yang diterima Agus Condro pun ditengarai berasal dari salah satu pengusaha perbankan yang bersedia mendanai pencalonan Miranda.

Sayangnya, Jonggi Goeltom menolak di­wawancarai. Melalui seorang kawan dekatnya, dia hanya menitipkan pesan: membantah terlibat dalam urus­an penca­lonan kakak perempuannya menjadi Deputi Gubernur Senior. Dita­nya terpisah soal peran sang adik, Miranda hanya menjawab pendek, ”Tidak ada itu.”

Semua borok pemilihan Dewan Gubernur Bank Indonesia terkuak le­bar oleh pengakuan Agus Condro. Sekarang bola ada di tangan Komisi Pembe­rantasan Korupsi. Namun tampaknya publik masih harus bersabar. Akhir pekan lalu, Ketua Komisi Antasari Azhar mengaku masih mempelajari apa latar belakang munculnya pengakuan Agus Condro. ”Telaah pengakuan ini merupakan bentuk profesionalisme kerja KPK,” kata Antasari.

Seorang sumber Tempo yang dekat dengan Miranda menduga munculnya kisruh ini berkaitan erat dengan habisnya masa jabatan Deputi Gubernur Senior pada pertengahan tahun depan. ”Ada yang ingin mengganjal dia supaya tidak dicalonkan lagi,” katanya. Sumber masalahnya pun, kata dia, tak jauh-jauh: dari kalangan dalam bank sentral sendiri.

Mungkin karena itu, meski diserang gencar sepanjang pekan lalu, Miranda tetap tenang. Ketika ditemui akhir pekan lalu, wajahnya sama sekali tak menunjukkan emosi berlebihan. ”Saya tidak tahu-menahu,” katanya ringan.

Muricy enche a bola de Miranda e celebra também retorno de Hernanes

Muricy Ramalho comemora o fato de ter os reforços de Hernanes e Miranda para o clássico contra o Santos, neste domingo, pelo Brasileiro. Enquanto o primeiro está mais do que confirmado, o segundo ainda merece atenção especial por estar voltando de lesão no joelho. Mas deve reforçar o time do São Paulo no Morumbi. E já retorna com elogios do comandante, que o considera o melhor zagueiro do Brasil.

- A surpresa é o Hernanes. O Miranda treinou melhor, está mais solto, mas tem que ser olhado com carinho e paciência, pois articulação pode dar problema. Hoje na posição ele é disparado o melhor do país. Infelizmente teve a contusão, mas tem que jogar para pegar ritmo - destaca Muricy.

O zagueiro fica animado com os elogios do comandante e garante que está pronto para enfrentar o Santos. Mesmo que não esteja 100% na parte técnica para jogar os 90 minutos, está disposto a se sacrificar.

- Estou fisicamente bem. Tecnicamente pode faltar um pouco ainda pelo tempo parado, mas só jogando vou melhorar. Jogar é um risco, mas na nossa profissão tem que correr riscos. Nos momentos difíceis surgem os grandes jogadores. Ter este reconhecimento do professor é muito bom, e vou sempre me empenhar muito - garante o zagueiro.

Debo iniciar mi comentario admitiendo que no he visto la serie. Asistí a ver el filme solo por descubrir, durante los 148 minutos que dura la película, qué es lo que los fans de la serie- como mi chico- admiran de esta historia neoyorquina.

Partiendo de ese punto, quise ver el filme como una cinta más. El inicio es un breve resumen de lo que sucedió con la vida de Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte y Samantha en el lapso de unos cinco años.

Samantha, una mujer de cinco décadas adicta al sexo mantiene milagrosamente una relación de 5 años con un apuesto joven, Miranda se ha convertido en toda una jefa de familia, Charlotte adoptó a una niña y Carrie inicia una nueva etapa con John James Preston (Mr. Big), el amor de su vida.

Hasta ahí, el filme cumple con ponernos al día a los despistados. Pasados esos minutos, el relato se torna un tanto regular, sin novedad más que la de Carrie y su pésima pedida de mano durante una sesión de cocina.

Llega la mitad del largometraje con una plantada a la novia de lo más trágica. Aquí, una clara intención del director al captar el instante en el que Carrie suelta el celular luego de que Big le dice que no puede casarse con ella.

Esa escena en particular me resulta insoportable porque me hace recordar a los desmayos fingidos de las telenovelas mexicanas. Recurso poco convincente para una escena dramática en la que hay que usar todas las herramientas necesarias para que el espectador se coloque en el pellejo de él o los personajes.

La tercera parte es más divertida. Es aquí que las amigas de Carrie, demostrando su incondicionalidad, la llevan de luna de miel a México. La atienden, le conversan, la hacen reír.

Cinco meses después, vemos a una Carrie castaña, ya no blonda como al inicio, queriendo deshacerse de todo recuerdo sobre Big. Ella contrató una asistente con quien ha puesto en orden cierta parte de su vida.

El final de la película, algo predecible. Un final de cuentos de hadas sin la pompa y el lujo al que las cuatro mujeres con más estilo de la TV estaban acostumbradas.

Anyway after a few hours of talking I finally went to bed and then when I found out I actually had the tickets I immediately invited him because I want to see if "Miranda" and him will get along. Fingers crossed. 

I am so excited for the US Open though! So many celebrities have been photographed there this week! Hopefully I will get to sit next to Johnny Depp on one side and Brad Pitt on the other side. Now wouldn't that be splendid? The celebrities that actually have been seen there include Anna Wintour, the goddess herself, Christie Brinkley, and those gorgeous pageant girls, Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe.

Sortim del Monestir i enfilem el camí del Pas dels Francesos fins arribar al Pla de Santa Anna. Des d'aquí continuarem cap a l'esquerra per un camí que porta al Pla dels Ocells, abans d'arribar-hi i tenint la Panxa del Bisbe al davant, prenem un corriol a mà dreta, que condueix fins a la Miranda de Sant Benet i al refugi. Quan estiguem davant de la miranda hem de pujar una rampa i després una canal que ens deixa a peu de via.

Sortim verticalment fins al primer parabolt, un cop xapat arribem fins a una petita balma. En aquest punt hem d'estar atents perquè la via es bifurca en dues. Nosaltres hem d'anar a buscar el parabolt que es troba a la dreta de la balma. A partir d'aquest punt el llarg transcorre en diagonal a la dreta fins arribar a la primera reunió. 30 metres.

L2(IV)

Sortim de la r amb lleugera tendència a l'esquerra i voregem una evident berruga. Un cop superada arribem a un bosquet penjat on muntem la reunió (en arbre). 35 metres.

L3(V)

Hem de creuar el bosquet i muntar la reunió al peu de la paret. La sortida de la r és la part més complicada de la via. Es tracta d'una placa vertical amb bona roca i ben assegurada; un cop superem aquest pas hem d'anar cap a l'esquerra per evitar un sostre i continuar pel costat d'una petita canaleta. Anirem a buscar la reunió en tendència a la dreta.

Des del cim hem d'anar a cercar la canal entre La Miranda de Sant Benet i la Panxa del Bisbe.

USB sticks are cheap these days, ranging from a 2gb at $13 to a 4gb at $23 USD, if you know where to shop. There's no excuse not to go for a 2gb or higher for a few bucks if you're like me and don't have installation rights on a computer somewhere.

Most of these applications below come from an application website know by the name Portable Apps. Others are from various other internet sources. I've compiled a list of the most useful ones, in my opinion, below.

Web Browsers

- Firefox 2 Portable - http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
      USB-enabled version of the popular Firefox browser. Fully supports plugins such as Flash, and almost all addons.

- Avant Browser USB Edition - http://dl.filekicker.com/send/file/184227-Z37W/avant.exe
      Portable version of Avant browser, a more obscure but well-built browser. I use this one more than Firefox. Doesn't have many addons, however.

- Opera USB - http://opera-usb.com/download/opera952en.zip
     USB Version of the semi-popular Opera browser. Not much more to say.

Word Processors / Text Editors

- AbiWord Portable - http://portableapps.com/apps/office/abiword_portable
     Pretty good word processor; nice alternative to Windows' Microsoft Word.

- OpenOffice Portable - http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable
     Renowned OpenOffice is available on USB. Only problem is the large filesize (240mb) Contains the ENTIRE OpenOffice suite, not just Writer. I'm sure you can find Writer alone on the site, possibly.

Instant Messengers

- Miranda IM - http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/miranda_portable
     Not all that sexy by default, but can be skinned and edited to your liking. Access to most IM networks, and IRC.

- Pidgin Portable - http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/pidgin_portable
    Pidgin. Another multi-IM network program. Formerly GAIM.

Games

- DOSBox Portable - http://portableapps.com/apps/games/dosbox_portable
     Used to run old DOS games smoothly on newer computers. Not a game itself, but an emulator.

Graphics / Picture Editors

- The GIMP, Portable - http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable
    It's GIMP. Portable. The only image editor / paint program you'll ever really need on your USB.

Music Players

- MPlayer - http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/mplayer_portable
    Has support for most music formats. And video formats.

Personal Information Managers

- EssentialPIM Portable - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/epimportable.html
    Works amazingly. ToDo's, notes, schedules, etc. Great interface, easy to navigate.

Apparently, it depends on just which six things you have in mind.

Yesterday, Lifehacker posted an interesting take on the pitfalls of multitasking in an interview with Dave Crenshaw, author of The Myth of Multitasking: How "Doing It All" Gets Nothing Done. "Crenshaw explains the difference between 'background tasking' -- like watching TV while exercising -- and 'switchtasking,' juggling two tasks by refocusing your attention back and forth between them, and losing time and progress in the switch." The Lifehacker blog post centers on how this issue plays out in the business world.

Interestingly, Simple Mom posted the mother's analysis of the same topic yesterday:

A Mama’s Challenge
Here’s the irony. With children at home, it often feels impossible for us to focus on anything more than two minutes at a time, because we’re constantly interrupted. As soon as I sit down to update our bank accounts, my daughter wants me to sharpen her colored pencils, or my son has dropped his toy for the umpteenth time and needs help retrieving it.

It’s the stage of life, and it is what it is. Small children require a lot of hands-on, interactive parenting, and while it’s a short-lived job, it leaves you utterly exhausted come bedtime, doesn’t it?

Even though I’d love to single-task most of my day jobs, it just isn’t going to happen. What mom doesn’t multi-task all day long? You’ve got to change the diaper and answer the phone. You oftentimes need to read to your older one while you nurse your younger.

For Simple Mom, the bottom line is that "There are more important things in life than getting things done."

While multi-tasking is often our only shot at snippets of creativity and seeming productivity, each of us has to determine our own threshold here. I happened to find my own personal limit yesterday. I share this publicly only in the hope that my story will serve as a cautionary tale to other mothers attempting the Superwoman thing.

At noon, I was finishing up the week's menu plan, trying to make the grocery list, fixing an issue with the blog, answering e-mail, greeting my mother who'd just arrived at my house, nursing the baby, and trying to make sure my 3-year-old didn't run off by himself for an opportunity to poop privately in his Pull-Up (we're still toilet training). My daughter called from a friend's house, asking for a ride home. She was in our neighborhood, within walking distance, but the timing was convenient so I said, "Sure -- I'm running out to the grocery store with Grandma. We'll pick you up on the way, in 15 minutes."

What happened? I forgot to pick her up.

As in, I went to the grocery store without picking her up as planned. When she called me on my cell phone to ask where I was, I slipped into a heart-stopping abyss of guilt. Thankfully, since my own mother was in the car, she helped me strategize how to explain the situation to my daughter (as we drove at top speed to retrieve her) in an attempt to save her from a life on the therapist's couch. My daughter (12 years old) gave me a good-natured ribbing, but even though she was gracious about the situation, I knew it had to have hurt. What is more painful to a mother than causing her own child pain?

I have never actually "forgotten" any of my children before, and I desperately hope never to do it again. I'd like to use sleep deprivation, an infant, a tally of five kids, pressing client work, and having my house on the market as some kind of defense. But sadly, there is no defense, and I know that. Perhaps, if I slow down just a little -- and stop trying to do 34 things at one time -- my brain will function a bit more efficiently. Until then, I have a lot of making up to do with my one and only daughter.
