In no particular order:

• Quicksilver (systemwide, free): the mouse-killer. I use it to launch different apps, look up words in the dictionary, search google, and search for apps (it's quicker than Spotlight). I could write a book on the many ways this app has improved my life.
• TextEXpander (systemwide, payware): for correcting my terrible spelling and changing all instances of 'movie' into the British 'film.' It also helps with long usernames like Kari's @ksilvennoinen on Twitter ;).
• Skitch (systemwide, beta so far): a replacement for the regular screencapture, which allows you to add text, etc. quite easily to your pictures.
• Quicklook (systemwide, comes with Leopard): adds preview-functions to just about any file and can be added too by third parties.
• Growl (systemwide, free): notifications for different apps, ranging from iTunes to Adium.
• Secrets (Sytemwide, free): allows you to hack your mac.
• Default Folder X (Systemwide, payware): adds things like favourite folders and history to your save-this-file dialogs. Huge time-saver!
• Genius (free with iTunes): I cannot count the ways that I love this addition to the latest iTunes, but it's really made my listening experience a 100 times better.
• Saft (Safari*, payware): How I love thee. it allows me to add my own shortcuts for bookmarks (the default ones have already been reserved by Quicksilver). It also adds a number of tab-management functions, like focus on last selected tab.
• Safari AdBlock (Safari*, free): it's free and you can add publicly available lists to it from Firefox's Adblock. Works better than Saft's for-pay adblocker.
• MailActOn (Mail, free afaik): adds short-cuts that you can use to shift mails to different categories.
• Bookmarklets (for any browser, mostly free): my current favourites.

The box is smallish, about 7"x 9"x 3". It is white and not horribly heavy. Shaking the box produces a shuffling of the stuffs. It takes a lot of stuffs to shuffle like that. Smelling the box produces nothing but the wonderful smell of recycled cardboard. I decide against licking the box (sensory description has its limitations, you know). Opening the box (thanks for all that tape, by the way), reveals a plethora of stuffs, the most obvious being a scattered pile of 10 post-its (why did we shake the box again?). Post-its are, in my opinion, the most brilliant and useful widgets ever. Shuffled with those post-its were two pens, one of which was exceptionally shiney and had its own metal case.  Also within the box was a letter opener, a magnetic paper clip holder, and a 2009 desk calendar. At this point, I am thrilled. Most of these objects are tools of the trade (my trade being writing). Yet, the stuffs didn't end there. There were two "pens" of hand sanitizer spray (am I that germy?) and *drum roll please* two brains. Yep, two random, palm-sized brains. These are by far my favorite stuffs in the box. These two brains are foam and squishy; the purpose being to relieve stress from your brain by releasing it onto these brains. I also find it amusing that my friend sends me two spare brains right as midterm week begins. If only I could get them to grow fingers so they can help me type some papers (or eyes to help read textbooks)... a future package perhaps?

Og hun er så begejstret for at kunne kommunikere via mail: Det er jo så nemt og sjovt..

Man kunne jo have forestillet sig, at hun foretrak det mere gammeldags "snailmail".

Altre volte sono catene che toccano problemi seri, come malattie e quant'altro. Ora, premesso che la mail può fare tanto a volte, mi chiedo come si possano inventare cavolate solo per commuovere un po' la gente a discapito di altri o addirittura per farsi 4 risate (c'è poco da ridere però).
A distanza di un anno mi sono ritrovata con una mail dove si richiede disperatamente una trasfusione di sangue per leucemia fulminante. Nel 2007, stessa mail con qualche modifica.
Rendiamoci conto che:
1. Non vi è una data, quindi dovremmo insospetterci.
2. Spesso alla fine viene detto "Falla girare per favore, non è una bufala!" Questa frase fa decisamente pensare...
3. I poveri buoni animi che ci credono o rigirano la mail o addirittura intasano i centralini degli ospedali, rallentando il lavoro di questi ultimi.
Sarei curiosa di sapere chi è quel cretino/a che si inventa queste cose. E' penoso!

Altre volte ancora mi capitano delle mail-catena molto carine, contenenti barzellette divertenti, frasi di comici, presentazioni ppt e così via. Ecco queste mi piacciono, le leggo volentieri e mi faccio pure 2 risate.
Anzi, qui sotto ve ne metto una molto bellina a parer mio, contenente un brano di Luciana Littizzetto.

Lo confesso. Ho ceduto alla tentazione di comprare la nuova rivista maschile 'For Men Magazine'. Del resto, come potevo resistere agli affascinanti argomenti annunciati dalla copertina (che, tra parentesi, ritrae un tizio con una faccia da pirla e un asciugamano di spugna bianca che fa tanto 'figo da spogliatoio')?
Almeno quattro i titoli memorabili:
 'Falle dire basta stanotte!'
'Ricco entro Pasqua: 15 idee geniali'
'Trucchi: mangi il doppio diventi la metà '
'Smetti di fumare e voli ai Caraibi'.
Non vorrei deludere il geniale direttore Andrea Biavardi, ma a far dire'BASTA' a una donna siete già tutti bravissimi da soli poiché di solito ne abbiamo abbastanza dopo i primi tre minuti.
La vostra difficoltà sta nel farle dire 'ANCORA!', al limite.
Ci pensi su, per il prossimo numero.

Riguardo allo slogan 'Ricco entro Pasqua'beh, signor Biavardi, se vuole fare le cose fatte bene, nel prossimo numero alleghi anche due simpatici gadgets: passamontagna e chiave inglese.
Alla promessa: 'Mangi il doppio e diventi la metà', invece, tenderei anche a credere.
Bisogna vedere la metà di cosa. Io, se mangio il doppio, signor Biavardi, divento l'esatta metà del Partenone, in effetti.
Infine, sempre in copertina, campeggia la scritta 'Smetti di fumare e voli ai Caraibi'.Guardi, signor direttore, io non ho mai conosciuto uno che abbia smesso di fumare e che sia andato in un'isola tropicale a festeggiare.
In compenso, ho sentito un sacco di gente che ha cominciato a fumare sostanze illecite e s'è fatta certi viaggi senza neanche uscire di casa che lei neanche si immagina.
Ma questo è solo l'inizio.
Una si illude che il peggio sia già tutto in copertina e invece no, il meglio è all'interno!
A pagina 52 c'è un avvincente e istruttivo servizio con tanto di foto redazionali su 'Come slacciarle il reggiseno' che tiene conto dei vari modelli (classico, seduttivo, sportivo...).
A parte l'intelligenza del servizio in sé, vorrei soffermarmi sul consiglio per slacciare rapidamente il modello sportivo, che è :'Se lei è spiritosa dacci un taglio con le forbici!'.
Biavardi, io le garantisco che sono una donna alquanto spiritosa, ma se un uomo che magari conosco da poco, in un momento di intimità mi tira fuori dal taschino un paio di forbici, io come minimo penso che sia il mostro di Milwaukee e nella migliore delle ipotesi gli assesto un calcio nelle palle che il mese dopo il soggetto in questione passa dal suo 'For Men Magazine' a'Donna Moderna'.

 E infine, l'apoteosi vera e propria: il test 'Sei uno stallone o una schiappa?'.
 Le domande sono tra le cose più esilaranti che io abbia mai letto in vita mia. In pratica sei ritenuto uno stallone se rispondi sì a domande come questa: 'Ti è mai capitato di farlo con una donna e poco dopo, con la sua compagna di stanza?'
'Un sacco di volte! Alla casa di riposo 'Domus Mariae'.
 O 'Di essere chiamato da una donna che ti chiede se può venire da te alle 9 del mattino?'
 Sì certo, da una rappresentante della Folletto.
 Mi fermo qui.

Donne, consoliamoci: noi una volta al mese avremo pure le nostre cose, ma loro una volta al mese hanno 'For Men Magazine' in edicola.
Mica lo so chi sta peggio!!

Full Press Release

Fremont, Nebraska, was one of the earliest and smallest communities in its state to receive a federally constructed post office. The original sandstone building went up in 1893-95, designed by architect Willoughby J. Edbrooke in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. I love the round-capped columns on the corners. Additions were added in 1910-11 and 1936-37. Still standing, this post office was added to National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

I've been saying I wasn't going to do many memes, but I've been reading Mailbox Monday on other blogs and I've really been enjoying it, so I decided to take the plunge.  This is a meme started by Marcia of The Printed Page.  This is how my week in books went:

• Monday - I received Rocket Man by William Elliott Hazelgrove from Pantonne Press.
• Wednesday - I received a copy of The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry.  I won this from Katrina over at Stone Soup.  Thanks, Katrina!  I also received Life After Genius by M. Ann Jacoby from Miriam at Hachette Books.  I'll be reading this one for a book tour on the 29th of this month.
• Thursday - Shana from Literarily sent me Outstanding in the Field: Farm to Table Cookbook by Jim Denevan.  Shana received this book and it wasn't for her, so she was sweet enough to send it to me!  Thanks, Shana!
• Friday - A Thousand Veils came from the author, DJ Murphy.  I also received So Long at the Fair by Christina Schwarz.  I was lucky enough to win this one from Lisalynne of Minds Alive on the Shelves.  I also got a bookmark autographed by Tess Gerritsen from Bookish Ruth.
• Saturday - I received my copy of Cooperative Village from Frances Madeson, the author.

It was a good book week here in South Carolina, so I've got a lot to read now.  What did you find in your mailbox last week?

So weit, so gut. Heut also bekam ich wieder eine solche pps. Doch schon beim zweiten Bild kam mir die Geschichte ausgesprochen bekannt vor. Sie heißt Kekse und findet sich im letzten Buch von Douglas N. Adams, Lachs im Zweifel. Nur findet sich in dieser pps kein Hinweis darauf.

Okay, die Geschichte ist etwas abgewandelt. Es wartet kein Mann auf einen Zug, sondern eine Frau auf ihr Flugzeug. Und sie hat auch keine Zeitung, sondern ein Buch gekauft. Doch das Hauptelement, worum sich die Geschichte dreht, sind auch immer noch die Kekse (die sie nicht mit der Zeitung verdeckt hat, sondern in ihrer Handtasche verstaut). Dessen ungeachtet finde ich es eine massive Verletzung des Urheberrechts.

Hinter diesem Link findet Ihr das Buch bei buecher.de mit einer SZ-Buchbesprechung vom 02.02.2004, in der die Geschichte ab dem vorletzten Absatz erwähnt wird als "vielleicht beste Short Story aller Zeiten", und könnt Euch ein Bild davon machen.

Well. On a different note som Petra brukar säga. Kan konstatera att söndagsmailen brukar vara hysterisk (t rolig). När jag loggar in runt 21, 21.30 har Erik varit igång sedan 20.30, Amalia loggar in där någonstans också. Komihågmail och diskussioner om än det ena än det andra flödar fram och tillbaka. Igår var jag sjukt trött och tänkte, äh, jag kollar bara om det är något jag bara MÅSTE kommentera (med det menas inte alltid något affärskritiskt tyvärr som jag "måste" kommentera. Det kan likagärna handla om att Erik blivit benämnd som en "mediaman och kreatör" för länge sen vilket jag inte kommer kunna släppa förrän 2010). Men igår: Var kanske alla lika trötta som jag? Tre mail. Och allt om "min måndag". Snopet värre.

This blog will be (almost) all about technology, and I start out with a little "ad" for a community I really like; ClueNet

ClueNet is a community with several "modules", like ClueIRC (an IRC server), ClueShell (A free SSH service) and ClueMail (a mail server).

Most free SSH services are really permissive in what you can and can't, but ClueShell ain't. The servers are driven by teh members of the community, using a central signup. To signup you need to be active on the IRC channel (which is already active and friendly), and chat "Cluefully".

Clueful chatting is generally to chat in proper english, without speaking leetspeak or similar. For more information on what clueful chatting is, visit the page on cluenet's own wiki. Each time you say a good (clueful) sentence you get points, and each time you say a bad (non-clueful) sentence, you lose points. When you get 500 points (doesn't take that long if you're active), you can apply for SSH access. In the application you need to answer some questions about yourself and what you want to do with the shell. After you have applied, people with voting permissions can vote on your ssh application, and when you have at least 4 votes, and at least 80% accept, an administrator can activate your account.

The main shell rules boils down to this:

• Don't use to many resources
• Don't try to crack the server or any user's private files.
• Use common sense

I have met a variety of Document Process Outsourcing companies in my time and they vary from entrepreneurial sheds through to highly sophistacted multi-site operations mailing billions of mailpieces per annum.

In choosing a document process outsourcing company, I would personally consider a few points:

• Is the company conversant in the sophisticated one-to-one customer communication techniques that we discuss here?
• Does the company have a focus on price or quality of service?
• Does the company have good change control mechanisms?
• What is the sophistication of the companies document composition platforms? Are they IT Centric or will your users be able to adapt content from their own workstations?
• Does the supplier recognise and understand the business value of the documents that you are sending?
• Are they able to integrate with workflow systems in your busines
• Are they able to integrate with your businesses content management systems?
• Do they have the infrastructure to capitalise on USPS / Royal Mail / Deutsche Post / La Poste discount schemes?
• How integrated can they make the processes between your business and theirs?
• What level of factory management and document integrity assurity do they offer?
• Can you quickly and easily find out the state of your production jobs?
• Can you quickly and easily get live management information ?

I will be talking more about the outsourcing theme over the coming week as it is an area that affects many of my customers. It seems that the disjointed strategy that has been discussed about document management internally also pervades within the document process outsourcing industry.

It is a highly fragmented market which with some notable exceptions has made it acutely price sensitive. Look for niche players who offer quality, a value proposition that really does add value and a background in your business sector.
