Anyways, I had to use the Veryfine vending machine this morning because the main vending machine apparently only accepts gold bullion because none of my money worked. I'm standing in front of this Veryfine machine staring at their stupid logo featuring an apple that was left out in the rain and is still wet. I'm staring at this stupid logo, and I'm thinking I would have loved to be at the meeting where they came up with the brand name. I imagine it went something like this:

"Gee, Bill, instead of come up with a name for our shitty juice, why don't we just call it Delicious?"

"No, Steven.  That's horrible.  We can't just call it what we want people to think of it.  People want a name that evokes something, not a description.  Would you go to see a band called Greatmusic?  Or watched a movie called Funmovie?  Or date a girl called Veryeasy?"

"Absolutely!  How about Tastesgreat?"

"Horrible."

"Verygood? Verytasty? Veryfine?"

"You're fired."

"Fine!"  Steve kills himself during meeting

"You know what... let's go with Veryfine."

In addition, 14 law school faculty members wrote a letter to the Chancellor asking him to rescind Schlafly's honorary degree.

Afterwards, Schlafly insulted the protestors, calling them "a bunch of losers," as well as "a bunch of bitter women."

I, on the other hand, am glad that so many people had the courage to stand up for their beliefs and protest the honorary doctorate.  While the school may not rescind the degree, I nonetheless think this was a positive example of feminist activism, as well as an illustration of why feminism is still relevant and necessary.

Uma das coisas que mais admiro nesta prosa é o facto de ela nunca cair, mesmo quando aborda os inevitáveis lugares-comuns do mundo bdsm, em quaisquer lugares comuns de sentimentos ou expressão. Outra é a maneira como exprime, sem ser sentimental, sentimentos intensos e profundos.

From his Wednesday Squibs i chose two: "The newspaper disease" by Roger Black, and a list of nine definitions for journalism ( my favorite is by cahrlie Beckett, i'm reading his book and i recommend you to do the same). Than i came across with an interesting post called "Blogs as a subversion of standard Journalism" from the brazilian blog Coffee'n'Cigarrettes. Samples and links below. Have a nice weekend.

This was the killer graph of David Carr’s mournful recent column, “At the Journal, the Words Not Spoken.” There are two big assertions here—ones that helped cause the great slide in the newspaper business. First, Carr implies newspapers are for the newsroom, not for the readers. And second, he suggests that there’s something wrong with the owners of a paper actually running it.

These are wrong ideas, ones that have tripped up journalism over the last 50 years, setting a fluid, dynamic business like concrete, into a stiff, unresponsive institution. J-school defined the methodology; the unions dictated the job descriptions; and the big chains, with their organization charts and greed did the rest.

Since my query letter didn't get put up on Query Shark, I thought that I'd try that.

I'm really impressed! The community is helpful, and when I reread my query I realized that they were absolutely right about its flaws, which my local writing group and in-person test readers didn't point out. I'm adding them to my blog links, under 'resources'.

(Also, I think I'll go rewrite my query letter. ;) )
