Both applications already support the open instant messaging standard XMPP since long. This means that these projects would have had support for Facebook Chat anyway if they just had a bit more patience.

I wonder if this is really true. If Facebook was so interested in XMPP, why didn't they start with that? Surely it's easier to start with XMPP than to write something else and then create a gateway. Perhaps they had no intention of an open garden, but later relented after they saw the cat was out of the bag with several clients getting Facebook chat support so quickly. Maybe we have these client authors to thank for this announcement?

I wonder how frustrated these developers currently are, now that they know that their brand fresh code will become obsolete even before it gets in a stable release.

This is a real concern. I hope they aren't so frustrated that they don't bother making the new XMPP based Facebook chat nicely integrated. It would be terrible if people continued to use the proprietary protocol when an open one is available. Maybe Facebook will shut off the wall garden once the XMPP support is in place. I definitely wouldn't want to support two protocols.

Sander suggests using XMPP transports instead for access to proprietary networks. He's written about it seperately as well.

Transports have several strategic advantages over native client support

While this is true, I think current transports lack in a lot of areas, and certainly I have not seen an XMPP client that has as nice an implementation of transports and transport set up as the multi protocol clients have for their proprietary networks. I think everyone agrees that the XMPP technology is better, but so far the developers (myself included) have not yet made this a win for users.

So let's welcome Facebook into our community of open instant messaging standards, and let's continue to improve the transports and the support for transports in the clients to lure those poor users living in the walled gardens.

Great news! The Facebook team is building a Jabber/XMPP interface for Facebook Chat. That means we can use whichever client we want to instant message our online friends on Facebook, update our status, and more. Digsby managed to hack together a good integration just two weeks ago, but the well anticipated Jabber/XMPP interface will greatly improve adoption. I can't wait to use it on my favorite web client, Meebo.

The application works like this: Once a user downloads the Nimbuzz application for the mobile and register as a new user, contacts from their selected IM communities are aggregated into a single contact list with icons indicating real-time "presence" - which contacts are online or offline and from which communities.

"Everyone loves Skype (on the PC). But when it comes to the mobile, we believe we offer a better solution," said Tariq Dag Steinberg Khan, the London-based chief marketing officer for Nimbuzz. "Nimbuzz works across all the major communities and on more than 500 handsets worldwide. With this new release, we now also have a genuine free mobile VoIP solution that works on more than 90 handsets including Nokia, Samsung, and LG."

According to the company, the new Nimbuzz mobile VoIP application works worldwide on Nokia Symbian Series 60 devices when connected using a 3G or Wi-Fi network (with a Windows Mobile offering for release in June). For GPRS/EDGE connections, or when using Java-enabled phones, Nimbuzz also offers its "hybrid-VoIP" solution (as used by Skype) - for making international mobile calls at local dial-in cost - in as many as 50 countries.

On the social networking front, Nimbuzz brings voice and mobile chat to social networks. The new six-button Communicator widget brings free calling, chat, text, and voice messaging and file sending to social networks, email signatures, and personal websites or blogs. Also introduced is the unique "buzz" feature which alerts your friends "offline" to join you online for a call or chat.

Nimbuzz claims that it has over 500,000 registered users, with 25% active per month, and is generating more than 1 million logins per week, despite the product still being developed.

Das ich mich nie bei Diensten wie StudiVZ angemeldet habe, traf lange Zeit auf Unverständnis. In letzter Zeit fangen aber immer mehr Leute an, ihre Profile wenigstens nicht (komplett) öffentlich zu machen. Wenigstens haben einige erkannt, dass ich wohl doch nicht so einen Blödsinn erzählt habe.  Gäbe es nicht diese 'I told you so!'-Momente...

Ähnlich sieht es aus, wenn man versucht Leute zum Einsatz von Jabber zu überzeugen. Windmühlen, ich sage nur Windmühlen!

Das tolle an Diensten wie dem MSN-Messenger ist aber, das die Firmen, die hinter diesen Programmen stehen, mittlerweile genau das tun, wovor man (ich) immer gewarnt hat.

Von einem gewissen Standpunkt aus, sind die Maßnahmen von Microsoft ja zu befürworten. So erkennt nämlich auch Otto Normalverbraucher endlich wie der Hase läuft.

Und dann ist er endlich wieder da, mein 'I told you so!'-Moment. Das Salz in der Suppe des Lebens. :)

Je lui ai envoyé un message à 19:07:29, on a discuté, j'ai pas fermé l'onglet de discussion (j'utilise Kopete). Il s'est déconnecté à 23:40:34 et juste à ce moment, MSN m'informe que le message que je lui aie envoyé plus de 6 heures auparavent n'a pas été envoyé... Pensez ce que vous voulez, pour ma part j'affirme que quand vous envoyez un message via MSN, vous n'êtes pas sûr(e) que votre correspondant(e) le reçoive :-° ! Ne partez pas ! J'ai pas fini :p . Je vais maintenant vous prouver que Microsoft censure certains messages qui transitent via MSN. Pour ce faire, je vais utiliser 2 clients MSN (Pidgin et Kopete) et 2 comptes MSN différents : "Compte de test" sur Pidgin et "Vinc14" sur Kopete.

Voici une capture d'écran qui montre très bien la censure. Vinc14 envoie à Compte de test un lien, et MSN le censure. Vous pouvez voir que Microsoft censure certains liens sur cette capture ci.

Alors, allez-vous continuer à utiliser un système de messagerie instantanée (abregé IM) où vos messages sont contrôlés voire censurés ? Un système d'IM qui est contrôlé par une entreprise n'ayant aucun scrupule à espionner et à abuser des gens, et qui les entube avec son système propriétaire ? Ou bien allez-vous vous tourner vers le système d'IM du futur, sur lequel vous avez tout contrôle et que personne n'ira chercher à censurer ?

Our Facebook profiles can be accessed and updated using a cellphone. That's a no brainer. But it's the effort - mainly the number of steps - required with this method that keeps me from being up-to-date on my profile.

Of course I have needs:

• I want the ability to edit my Facebook status without having to login to an interface.
• I want this update to be available on multiple sites/applications similar to syndication.
• I want the solution to have multiple points of access for input via integration with other sites/application.

And the winner is (well... are):

• Twitter
• TwitterSync for Facebook
• Digsby (only if you want to edit your Twitter status via IM and want to centralize your IM accounts)
• Google Talk / Jabber / Live Journal account (only if you want to edit your Twitter status via IM)

Twitter
This is a one time setup; no need to maintain anything on Twitter after completing these steps.

1. Register on www.twitter.com
2. Setup cellphone (doesn't need to be a smartphone) as a Device.
   Note: don't forget to type +1 before your cell number
3. Setup your IM client (optional)
4. Under Settings >> Account, be sure to select "Protect my updates" to maintain your privacy.
5. Turn OFF the notifications to your cellphone if you don't want to receive a text message every time a friend makes a Twitter update. Granted if you don't have any Twitter contacts, then you shouldn't receive any notifications.

TwitterSync for Facebook

1. Add TwitterSync as a Facebook application

--> At this point you can update your Twitter status via texting on your phone, and your Facebook status is updated automatically.

Note: If you are blocking TwitterSync in your Twitter account, the synchronization will fail.

Digsby
Digsby is a multi-client IM application that ties in email notifications and social network updates. It's an optional step and it will give you the opportunity to centralize your IM accounts. Not many IM application combine Yahoo and MSN with Google Talk.
Digsby is currently available on Windows; Mac OS and Linux version to follow.

1. Go to www.digsby.com and download the application.
2. Under Digsby Preferences, setup your various IM Accounts, Email Accounts and Social Networks including your new Twitter account
3. Add twitter@twitter.com as an IM contact and send the verification code provided by Twitter on your Device setup page.

--> Now you can update your Twitter status by texting and via IM, which will then update your Facebook profile status.

Beyond Facebook
You Twitter status can be added to your MySpace profile, your blog or your own website. One point of entry - e.g. texting on your phone - will update your profile status 'everywhere'.

The developer of TwitterSync added a note about similar Twitter sync tool with MySpace. Due to MySpace's currently lenient security, the developer expressed a warning against the sync tool with MySpace.

Masuk chat IRC melalui Bombusmod

1. Klik "More" - "Conference"
2. Di Bookmark - "More" - "New Conference"
3. "Room" isi dengan nama room IRC dan server IRCnya, formatnya adalah namaroomirc%serverirc, % adalah simbol persen. Misalnya : bombusmod%mesra.kl.my.dal.net
4. "At Host"isi dengan server transport irc, misalnya: irc.draugr.de
5. "Nickname" : Isi nama panggilan Anda
6. Klik More - Add bookmark untuk menyimpan room tersebut
7. Klik Join untuk masuk room

Apabila room IRC berisi banyak orang tentunya masuknya juga akan lama. Silahkan coba dengan room bombusmod diatas, tidak ada penghuninya disana hehe

Mengirim Email
Transport untuk berkirim email ini adalah smtp.jabbus.org, dan hanya bisa untuk akun jabbus.org. Fitur ini ada juga di server lain yang mendukung fitur smtp.

1. Masukkan kontak smtp.jabbus.org
2. Maka kemudian akan ada transport smtp.jabbus.org
3. Agar dapat menerima email, pilih transport tersebut, klik "Action" - "Command" - "Register". Ada pilihan dalam bahasa Rusia, centang keduanya, klik "Send". Alamat email adalah JID Anda
4. Untuk mengirim email, tambahkan kontak dengan alamat email yang akan dituju Formatnya alamat%email.com@smtp.jabbus.org. Contohnya apabila akan mengirim email ke diriku@yahoo.com maka ditulis seperti ini diriku%yahoo.com@smtp.jabbus.org
5. Untuk berkirim email silahkan menulis pesan dengan kontak tersebut, JID Anda akan menjadi alamat email pengirim
6. Kelemahannya adalah tidak bisa attachment atau menulis subject

Penyimpanan File Online
Transport untuk menyimpan file ini adalah disk.jabbus.org, dan hanya bisa untuk akun jabbus.org. Fitur ini ada juga di server lain yang mendukung fitur disk.

1. Silahkan register transport disk.jabbus.org
2. Setelah itu akan ada 2 roster/kontak masuk yaitu public and private
3. Public artinya daftar file didalamnya bisa diakses setiap orang. Pengguna lain bisa membuka melalui http://disk.jabbus.org/public/jid_anda
4. Private artinya file hanya bisa dibuka melalui link langsung ke file tersebut. Daftar file2 lain tidak bisa terlihat
5. Pada saat membuka file biasanya akan ada popup password dan username. Silahkan isi semua dengan: 0 (angka nol)
6. Untuk mengirim file adalah dengan memilih roster public atau private kemudian "Action"-"Send File"

Beberapa perintah dalam penyimpanan file. Ketik perintah dibawah ini di roster public atau private:

• du - memperlihatkan kapasitas disk yang telah dipakai. Tiap akun mendapatkan space 50 Mega
• ls - menampilkan daftar file
• ls jid - menampilkan daftar file publik orang lain, jid diganti dengan jid yang dituju
• get jid filename - meminta suatu file milik orang lain
• rm filename - menghapus file tertentu dari disk;
• link filename - memperlihatkan link url suatu file

• Login dengan menggunakan username dan password AI3 anda
• Tambahkan teman-teman anda dengan memasukkan akun AI3 teman anda pada menu tambah teman (add buddy) software jabber client
