The first two ideas are meant for developers trying to understand a code base they haven’t see

The first two ideas are meant for developers trying to understand a code base they haven't seen before.

Run a program. Keep track of which lines of code get hit and count how many times. In the source code editor, colour by use. Help the developer focus on the important stuff. (Inspired by the performance profiling line-by-line heat map I once saw in XCode.) Advanced version: Save this information and link to test cases, so it's easy to look at the code that a test case hits.

Run a program. For variables that get used in control statements, keep track of the domain of those variables during program execution. This would make it easy to catch some fencepost errors and also see why control statements ran the way they did, without stepping through in the debugger.

Novice programmers test their programs by running them again and again and typing in the input again and again. They use print statements to debug. Automated tests are better and not much more work. We need a way to turn a program execution with typed-in input into a high-quality automated test cases. Macros don't cut it. This is hard but solving it is valuable. (This one has been done, but as far as I know, not yet done well.)

Love Under Fire

I think it's time I put love on trial. Sit it there in the court room and have it cross-examined, questioned, interrogated. Have witnesses come up and give their stories and experiences with this thing called love. Could it handle the pressure? Could it stand the test? Would it hold up under fire? What would the line of questioning be: Mr. Love, you said I had all the makings of a potential wife and that you'd never stop loving me, tell me Mr. Love, what happened to you the night you married someone else instead? Maybe then I can reach a verdict on the matter--a ruling. Would love be sentenced to life in prison? I wonder. It's certainly worth exploring and entertaining. It'd be rather interesting to watch, wouldn't you agree. I'm sure it'd be a case that would last an eternity. Maybe that is what each of our lives are--our dating experiences-- nothing more than love under fire. We sit in the judges seat as the new boo takes the stand to testify of his love. But in the court of love, we'd have to play many roles: that of judge, lawyer, and juror. I'd image that would be very exhausting after a while.

I only mention this because I had a conversation with my grandmother the other night. A woman with close to 70 years of experience with love. And she took the witness stand and very candidly stated that love should be locked up. According to her, "we should not go falling in love these days". When asked what one should do with love, she said that you will learn to love someone in time. Our objective should be to find yourself a decent person who is trying to accomplish something in life and is willing to work with you. And as you work along with them, love will come in time. And as much as I am a helpless romantic, I am beginning to notice that it leaves me more helpless than it does leave me experiencing romance. I'd hate to think for a moment that my grandmother could be right but when experience is on one end of the phone while wishful thinking is on the other, it has to account for something. Experience pulls the plug on wishful thinking when it realizes that it is all a fantasy, allowed to live and breathe as long as it's fed with false hopes. We all want the fairy tale endings and if that weren't enough, we want the fairy tale beginnings and middles too. Does it happen that way? Only in our dreams. But where did we derive this sense of Happily Ever After Land? And as I sat and spoke with her I wondered what Walt Disney would have to say for himself if he were to take the stand directly after my grandmother. Certainly Mr. Disney, life is very different from the fairy tales you fed us when we were kids. What do you have to say for yourself? Where are all the prince charmings? And this undying unconditional love? Where's the happily ever afters? Mr. Disney I'm afraid you've led us all terribly astray.

Maybe it's our ideas and expectations of love we need to put on trial. What do you think?

Container-based Identity and Society

Identity seems to be a fluid self-association to things, a sort of container which sits within each

Identity seems to be a fluid self-association to things, a sort of container which sits within each person, rather than a container which fits people within it.

Unfortunately, this viewpoint is not always held by people who work on a-priori bases for knowledge, its acquisition, one's profession and identity. A case in point is India's caste system, another case in point is the division of people into various work categories and the classifications they are put under, depending on their social needs, economic tendencies and situation, and their professional status.

Everything is not everyone's business. Everything may be somebody's business, in that the successful implementation of any system depends on an architect. The presence of this architect is more often a fall out of the presence of the system, rather than the architect actually constructing the system. In case of less complex systems it is possible that architects can contribute the blueprint and the setting up of a system and instructions as to how to operate it. The architect's identity seems to stem from the need to know things, and organize how they are constructed. Essentially, his/her world view seems to be a necessary combination of curiosity and detachment. The architect is different from the scientist in that the scientist is interested in what works, while the architect is interested in how things are. (In MBTI terminology, the architect could be an INTP personality type and the scientist could be likened to an INTJ personality type). That said, it warrants further attention as to what these terms actually mean - the architect is named more conventionally, in my opinion, than the scientist, whose very definition requires the definition of a science or a philosophical method of inquiry.

The identity of the scientist is different from that of the architect, and the scientist is often given to compromises that work, while the architect is given to structure. Identity being fluid as it is, the modern world seems to be better geared to the scientist than the architect.

What gives one an identity? Do the containers "architect" and "scientist" refer to roles people take up in their myriad hues, or do they refer to instances of psychological coherence/coterminousness with a collection of predetermined traits, seen as a characteristic image of a person?

In the absence of such container-based identity and mental pigeonholes, could there have been a caste system? More importantly to me, (since I have been proven to be INTJ more often than INTP) is there a use in container-based identities which misses me? Or, is the role-playing identity which we can connect to at times more useful in my view of identity being a fluid, self-associative, quest for projecting action?

How does identity spur violence? Is identity which is container-based essentially unsuitable for equitable, economically free societies? Furthermore, as ideal and excellent as equitable societies may seem, are they a working, useful social model?

You suck!

Now that we have that out of the way, allow me a moment or two of your time to explain why.

Though many a learned person has dissmissed the theories of Dr. Freud as nasally obsessed tomfoolery, the notion of the Id remains an alluring one. Imagine your inner being, driven by the pleasure principle, met at every turn by the arbitrary and domineering Super Ego, ruining all its fun. Whether we can ever silence this subconscious, primal scream remains unseen to all but the individual. More likely, it is either modified (in which case, we grow up to be alien to ourselves) or, it is repressed (in which case, we grow up to be grow up to be Civilization's Discontents, to use Freud's terminology).

In the end, I think people end up being disappointed when they realize that life is its own reward. I would cautiously suggest that Bill Gates lives the same life of any man who benefits from his own merits; only the tax bracket is different. If the "poorer" man concentrated more on the life he has, compared to nothing, he would be less likely to hate his life because of what he doesn't have and more likely to love it through appreciation of what he does.

No man can be happy when his family is starving but not buying into every stupid fad that crosses your line of sight buys a lot of food. Also, the ridiculous fortunes of those he enviesare built upon his buying their useless products to service his lifestyle, not his life.

I still defend the Id because the Id is about thought, desire, and action, not "stuff"; primal desire shouldn't have anything to do with a PSP or the jewelled sneakers some crack whore socialite wears in her latest softcore porn music video.

"More! More! More!" is the new life mantra. Want becomes need and anything with intrinsic value falls by the weigh-side and chokes on its own last breaths in a roadside ditch, sitting shiva with the other animals that couldn't navigate the new super highway.

My Id screams for freedom from all of this. It desires the simplicity it once knew. The Super Ego grows exponentially. The middle man, my Ego, is content that life is its own reward. I only wish, dream of a time when it is again the life not found in a crack whore socialite's latest softcore porn music video. I'd like to live in that world.

Post Troopergate...

For all her protestations of innocence, Sarah Palin is a pariah. She is a grasping politician with ambitions that are beyond her capabilities and all those rent a mob mavericks who applaud her should be shamed.

John McCain is becoming almost irrelevant. He has prostituted himself to the lies of the Right and to the lies of the Neocons. Where he was once a proud defender of American values, he is now a tired old apology of a presidential candidate.

This is McCain's last chance to show true Leadership: he should instruct Sarah Palin to stand down as potential VP and he in turn should stop inciting crowds to violent racism; he should reclaim his values, he should reclaim his voice and he should let the American People know what the GOP really stands for. At this time of Global Economic Catastrophe, he should talk about the issues that really matter.

Or else, come Election Day, he will see his campaign swept away like dust.

Lots of my work has to do with “pedagogical agents.” These are virtual characters employ

Lots of my work has to do with "pedagogical agents." These are virtual characters employed in electronic learning environments for instructional purposes. But what lies behind the lingo? These are images of beings (humans or inanimate objects) that appear in learning modules or tutorials and "do something". Some of them can hold a conversation with a learner (conversational pedagogical agents) while others present information, decorate the learning environment, or represent some sort of a persona. The second type of agents I call passive or non-conversational pedagogical agents. This is the type that gets employed the most in pedagogical agent research and this is the type of agent that I am going to bash in this post! :)

Pedagogical agents represent one of those technologies that have been presented as greatly beneficial to teaching and learning. Yet, the difference hasn't been made explicit. Conversational agents, for reasons that I won't explore here may be beneficial. Passive pedagogical agents however will not have any lasting impact on learning or any lasting impression on students. This is because:

* Pedagogical agents who merely present information to students are boring. Boring is bad. Let me say that again because educational technology researchers/designers might not have got it the first time around: Boring is bad.

* Pedagogical agents who don't allow from deviation from the given task are "oppressive". To be clear, "oppression" here is compatible to (or derived from) Freire's description of classroom oppression and democracy.

While I do believe (and have empirical evidence) that the pedagogical agent's representation influences how people interact with them, passivity isn't the way forward.

Apologies for the negative post - but to move forward we need to talk about these things too :)

I love my heroes. I think the word is used an awfully lot, especially on people who suffer some sort

I love my heroes. I think the word is used an awfully lot, especially on people who suffer some sort of disability. Such words are used as umbrellas over those people you think go through a lot of crap in their lives. I am not calling the challenges that these people face uninspiring by any means, but I do think that word "hero" merits something different. This is how I feel, and when you just don't believe people when they say their hero is seven years old, you are feeling the same way.

When I think of heroes I usually think of people like Claire Colburn from Elizabethtown or Ana Pascal from Stranger Than Fiction. In a more stretched sense of the word I think of Tony Stark before he was Ironman or even Jack Dawson when he was issuing his classic proposition to Rose. Sometimes when I see people in a business daydreaming behind a counter or catch the rare glimpses of someone actually reading for leisure I like to imagine that they are such a person. Maybe they are freethinkers, laughing and loving and traveling without running the race of social Darwinism. Such people really exist, you know. They meet you and greet you and sometimes leave your life as easily as they entered, always too quickly. They are all the slow songs and late nights and hand-written letters that you've ever imagined. I can always look to these people, people who are in themselves complete and always envied by the imitators. They are usually poor, self sufficient, and love the feeling of wind on their face. They run for this feeling, they push forward for this feeling, because when you have nothing left it's the only way you can move.

I have a few real-life heroes. They are not athletes or rock stars, but they live their lives in a way that would never really translate into anyone else's. Their path is so unique and different that they can never follow any intuition save their own, and somehow it always works out. They live all over this country.

I have

one in the outskirts of Los Angeles, California,
one in Boston, Massachusetts,
one in Rochester, New York,
one in Nashville, Tennessee,
one in Gainesville, Florida,
two in Boulder, Colorado,
and one in the western part of my own state.

The thing about heroes is, well, you always want them to know that they're your heroes. You want them to know that you're counting on them to continue what they're doing, to keep up the work that gives you the motivation to go on. Sometimes I find myself, late at night, listening to all the sad songs on a crackling FM stereo and wondering if all those beautiful people know what they are doing or remember the good times that still make me smile when I remember them.

The philosophies of my life would never transfer successfully into your own life. This is not for reasons of my past or your present, but rather because we are supposed to fit so closely together that cooperation, instead of competition, is the only way we can live happily. The people who give me a life to believe in leave me wanting to go back to them one more time. They make me want to grab my keys, walk out to my car, and drive there on a one way trip. It's like they walk up barefoot and sit beside you on the floor, telling you that it can be done, it has been done correctly before, and, no matter what, you are going to do it with them alongside.

Heroes are those people who come and go when your circumstances allow you to cross paths. You think of them on sleepless nights, and lying behind open green eyes you start thinking

And all of sudden you find yourself against the wall, saying,
"Before it's too late, before it's too late, before it's too late I want to share your life one more time."

You're up against the wall of growing older, growing up, and to lose those people who meant so much to the dreaded enemy of forgetfulness is, simply, terrifying.

And out there they live all over the country, meeting, inspiring, and God willing, remembering. To those heroes out there who have become part of my readership, I have not forgotten you.

In fact, I am doing everything I can to pass on the torch.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to you all!

I spent all of yesterday baking, cooking and painting. Fun!

So what did I get accomplished you might ask?

Well, I made two pumpkin pies, baked some yams and made stuffing.

Oh and I also finished the watercolor on the "Three Fold Prayer" series.

I was able to finish the writing on the first piece "Persistence" however I haven't had time to take a picture yet.

You'll just have to wait until my next post.

Here's a look at the recently added watercolor layer.

(heh it was still wet and curly when I took the picture :P)

As you can see, I've given each piece a dark brown background.

The writing however, will only extend out to the begining edge of that said background.

I'm already liking how "Persistence" turned out so I think the series will be nice.

These peices aren't claimed yet so if you're interested in purchasing the series or commissioning a similar piece drop me an email: themilkeway(at)gmail.com.

Well, I'm off to eat a bounty of Thanksgiving dishes!

Cheers,

Every morning it seems to be that we get out of bed you reach to the sky and say, please be a b

Every morning it seems to be that we get out of bed you reach to the sky and say, please be a better day than yesterday. You go down stairs turn on the TV, the news reader says bad news I'm afraid, the country is not getting any better, the Banks are not lending any money, the mortgage is getting harder to pay and the cost of living is getting out of hand, and you think will I still have a job at the end of the day.

Money worries and fears about the cost of living are starting to impact on almost everybody's daily life, affecting most decisions about even the most normal of our daily events. So we've put together a list of 10 simple things that are quick, easy ways to cut back and save money. Don't despair this is what to do, read all ten, they might help you.

Make sure all the family have a good breakfast before they leave the house, a good breakfast will fill you up and should help stop any snacks. Be sure you keep the leftovers for the dog.

Always try and make packed lunches to take with you, soup and home made sandwiches are cheap and filling, and have a banana or apple for late afternoon.

Most families spend over £100 per week at the supermarket. There are lots of ways to shave some of that off. Plan a weeks worth of meals, so you know what you are buying for which meals. Make a list and only shop for items you need, try the super markets own brands, don't be distracted by the "buy-two-get-one-free" offers, if you really only need one you are not saving money by buying three.

If you like a glass of wine etc, try to cut back to having a drink at the weekends only. And if you smoke stop it now, just think of the vast amount of money that your wasting never mind your health and your families, by stopping you could save thousands of pounds. The money from the fags could pay for a good family holiday, and you which of those your family would prefer.

When traveling to work and school try walking, using a bicycle or public transport this will be the cheapest way to travel and will keep you fit. You could also invest in a family railcard, this should save about a 30% of the normal price.

Fuel bills are the hardest to control, with the rising cost of oil, gas and electric its hard to decide how to heat your home, you just have make sure the kids don't leave the doors or windows open, lights are not on when they are not needed, set the timer for the heating and water to come on when you are up and not left on thermostat. Make sure that all washing machines and dishwashers are full before you use them. Always switch of every thing that on standby when not in use and change you light bulbs to energy savers. And the easiest of the lot, put on a jumper before you turn that heating up.

You need to keep your finances in check, the best way to do this is to work out a budget for the month. You need to look at every thing that you spend to get a true picture, look at your credit cards you maybe able to find a lower rate, look at how much your car costs you, how much you spend on clothes, entertainment, insurances etc. Also keep an eye on those large number of small amounts that we all have set up on the direct debits, things such as the TV license, Sky television subscriptions, contact lens schemes, donations, magazine & newspapers subscriptions, DVD rental clubs, gym memberships. Individually these items are usually only a few pounds each, but add them up and you are maybe spending a couple of hundred pounds a month. Do you really need them?

Try to go on bicycle trips or walks on the beach or in your local parks, this you can do for free. By starting to walk or cycle everywhere you will start to see thing that you havent noticed before. There are loads of free things that you can do as a family for entertainment. Give up those weekend shopping trips and instead get out and about in the fresh air, go and see family and friends, spend some time baking with the children. Entertainment doesn't need to be expensive.

Check your suppliers and your policies. Prices of Life insurance have plummeted over the last 10 years, if you arranged your life insurance as part of your mortgage then the chances are you are paying over the odds. Get some quotes, check the alternatives, and move suppliers and save money. Same goes for electricity, gas, credit cards, household & car insurances, breakdown etc.

I could go on for weeks suggesting to you how to save money, but before i was finished you would have gone mad. All the experts tell you to save, save, save, but that's not fun, and we need some treats in a credit crunch to make us feel better. Go out for meal once a month, make sure that you spend some good time together because when finances get tight it can add a lot of stress into the family environment. So treat yourself to a bar of dairy milk chocolate, buy yourself a lipstick as a reward for not spending £100 on those lovely new boots etc. But the best value out there is the Internet, spending time on Google will help you and your family gain knowledge about the world a round us. (Just stay away from the shopping sites!) Try an online business games, choose one where you can play against your partner, get some friendly competitive rivalry going. Playing games provide a more affordable alternative to many other family leisure activities, and provides a sometimes welcome distraction from those brown envelopes sitting on the doormat.

The slide deck below from Sequoia Capital is some solid advice about dealing with the entire economic crisis and recession from a startup standpoint. If you are an entrepreneur in any part of the world, I am sure there's something useful for you in this deck.

In fact, the slides below give a good synopsis of the entire problem in the US and global markets and the effects which they have had on the global economy and how startups need to deal with new challenges and realities. I especially like slides 46-55, which are strategies which startups can adopt to get past the tough times.

I have been hearing through the grape-vine lately that there is talk about putting Promethean Boards

I have been hearing through the grape-vine lately that there is talk about putting Promethean Boards in the high, middle and elementary schools. It is hard to say at this point if these thoughts are going to be carried out, but it is truly exciting thinking there is a possibility.

There are so many options, not just for the teacher, but for the students. With technology you can produce a video right before their eyes, no set-up or prep for it. You could whip out some digital coins to manipulate for them. Bringing up a thermometer to read, an audio book to listen to a step-by-step diagram showing how a frames & arrows problem works. The possibilities are endless.

The media specialist in our school has dropped my name in hopes that we'd be able to collaborate on some projects this year and in years coming. We are also talking about collaborating on a project that would have the students creating weather reports to be posted online. I'm just thinking of the ownership the kiddos would have over a project like that and how proud they would be to bring up their own voice at home so there parents, friends and family could listen and realize how much they're learning.

In order to pull off a project like this I would need, a computer with software that: could record voices, manipulate audio & publish to the web. A website with enough space to store a minimum of 10-15 weather reports. A microphone. Time to have the kiddos practice and record their report. Support to help the students record their audio track and manipulate it for the web.

I might come across stage fright issues in a project like this. Some of the students might be nervous about recording their voice for a webcast. There may also be problems with time. In order to get 23 students (even in partners it's 12 groups) to prepare, practice & record their weather report I would need about 12 weeks. That's a scary thought!!

I think that most of the students in my class would catch on to using the audio recording software quite quickly. Most of the students are familiar with using an MP3 or other audio device and are thusly familiar with the buttons and their purpose. I feel that they would be able to transfer that knowledge fluidly.

These are just some of my ponderings and what I'm excited for in the future! I'll keep you posted.

No existen cimas, sino tránsitos.

Me explico.

"Presentazion Zen. Simple ideas on presentation design and delivery" de Garr Reynolds.

"Slideology. The art and science of creating great presentations" de Nancy Duarte.

Seamos realistas...

No soy creativo...

No tenemos tiempo...

.
