1. If your vehicles are damaged in combat during the Civilization Stage, just move them adjacent to any friendly city, and they will automatically start to repair.

2. When building up a city or colony, start by placing a Factory and an Entertainment building on opposite sides of the City Hall, and then build Houses around each of them to multiply their positive effects while minimizing the Factory's negative effect.

3. When trading in the Space Stage, remember that different races and even different planets have different needs, so be sure to shop around for the most eager buyers. Don't just unload your spice for a couple hundred Sporebucks. There are planets out there who will pay thousands!

4. If your city is about to fall to enemy forces, sell off every remaining building for whatever you can get for them. You get a few Sporebucks in your pocket, and the enemy takes control of a completely empty city.

5. When you have an alliance with an empire, visit their colonies, open a communication channel, and request that they donate a spaceship to your Fleet (if you've advanced far enough to be able to have a fleet). Having a Fleet to back you up makes a huge difference in the Space Stage and gives you an edge in combat that no single spaceship can match.

1) Your actions in earlier stages affect your starting points in later stages. For example, if you're an aggressive race in the Tribal Stage, you will begin the Civilization Stage as a military society. If you win over other tribes by performing songs or giving them gifts, you will begin the Civilization Stage as a religious or economic society, respectively.

2) Offer wild creatures food from your stores in Tribal Stage to domesticate them and harvest eggs from them, which herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores can all eat. In a pinch, carnivorous and omnivorous tribes can also eat their domesticated animals if food runs low.
3) Economic vehicles are the only vehicles in the Civilization Stage that do not have any offensive capabilities. To protect them, retreat to a city fortified with turrets, or escort them with military or religious units.

4) Hold down TAB when creating a creature, building, or vehicle to bring up a variety of advanced part placement options.

5) Keep at least one or two of your tribesmen in your village in the Tribal Stage to discourage wild animals from stealing your food.

Our electricity company, Scottish Power, has put its prices up again, one of the last of the energy companies to announce the increased charges in this round of oil-fuelled . I don't know for certain yet, but I think our monthly direct debit will rise from £60 to £80. (Until March this year, it was only £40 a month.)

If we weren't on a green tariff, I still wouldn't like the increase, but I would understand it. But charging us more because of rising global oil prices when our share of the generation comes from hydro-electric power stations in Scotland does seem a bit mad. Here's what Scottish Power say about our tariff.

'With ScottishPower H20 all the electricity you use in your home will be matched with 100% green electricity from our hydro-electric power stations in Scotland. So however much you use, an equivalent amount of green electricity will be placed into the grid. ScottishPower will also plant a tree on behalf of customers signing up to the H2O tariff as part of a British forest regeneration scheme run by the Carbon Neutral Company. You will be charged no more than the ScottishPower standard rates.'

A further strange thing is that there is still no cheaper green tariff - not from any provider. We want to support renewables, and would expect that there is going to come a point where the oil price is so high that is cheaper to use wind- or hydro-power. Have we really not reached that point yet?

I did look for a green capped tariff before the price rises kicked off. I scoured the comparison websites and providers' own sites, but couldn't find a single company offering green energy at a fixed price. I checked again today, and our tariff is still the cheapest of the green options. So we're stuck with the price increase. Unless we can reduce our energy consumption, of course.

That's where it gets fun. I need to think of even more energy-saving ideas. I think we do all the obvious stuff, and I'd like to step it up a gear and see if there are any more unusual ideas to try.

We already use 63% of our energy on the night rate (we're on an Economy 7 tariff which is also green, just to complicate matters). This could perhaps be increased - but I'm struggling to think of things we can use (or charge) overnight. I can't exactly hoover between 12.30 and 7.30 am without becoming very unpopular with the neighbours. 

• All our lightbulbs are energy-efficient ones, so no savings to be made there.
• We line-dry our laundry (which is washed on an economy cycle just before the end of the night rate).
• We're pretty good about switching lights off and not leaving things on standby.
• We only use a tiny travel kettle, and avoid boiling more water than we'll use.
• We really need an extra 10cm depth of loft insulation, but that will be expensive and is a long-term idea rather than something we can do straight away.

Hmm.

My current brainwaves:

• Cook more meals in the slow cooker.
• Only use the oven if cooking several things, so it is full.
• Do the ironing before 7.30 am (slightly painful to be ironing at that hour, but not as impossible as it will be when the clocks change to GMT, and the night rate is from 11.30 pm until 6.30 am. If you think I'm ironing at 6.00 am... no chance. And I'm never still up at 11.30 pm).

But there I get stuck, short of becoming completely noctural, which isn't an entirely convenient option. Suggestions (especially any more unusual/quirky/bonkers ideas) are very welcome.

As mentioned, a page just littered with key words and no actual concern for what the reader has searched for is NOT going to get you found.

Ohh you spotted it: key words - These are an integral part of search engine optimisation but when used correctly.

Key words are the words that essential summarise what your webpage is about. Every page can have different keywords but of course there will be some key words that are the same throughout your website.

Keywords are an important part of SEO but bare in mind that you are not going to get found for obvious generic terms.

For example say you wanted to be found for the word CELEBRITY. You have a lovely little website about all the grotty things CELEBRITYs' have been getting up to but not getting much traffic. You've littered your page with the word CELEBRITY but still no luck! Well this is because you are using a generic keyword and big companies will have experts fighting and working to get their site ranked 1st for a word like that and let's face facts, you are not going to be able to compete with this level of SEO - well not yet anyway ;)

So how do you get around this?

This is the cunning part.

It is estimated that everyday Google has to deal with and search for over 2 million brand new key words or key phrases that it has never ever seen before - yes every day!!! Meaning that everyday new words are up and out there for the taking.

Think of every words related to the keywords that epitomise your site - imagine it as the 'word association game' of the digital age - i.e Celebrity = famous person / stalking paparazzi shots / actress walking / model mother etc etc.

These more random, and SEO's say, "long tail" searches are going to work in your favour as more as more people search for words and phrases Google has never indexed before

So simply put, think about what your site is about and then think a little bit outside the box for maximum creativity and results.
