Poppermost: Lex on Carole King

According to Lex’s aunts, Carole King was little Lex’s first “girlfriend.”

According to Lex's aunts, Carole King was little Lex's first "girlfriend." When Tapestry was played on the music room stereo, Lex would leap for the album cover and clutch it close to his heart. Happy birthday to Carole, who has a birthday on February 9.

I remember holding that album cover tightly to my chest while listening. I remember her frizzy brown hair, sweater, jeans, and her beautiful nose. Let me say this loud and clear. For the record, Carole King is the first female outside of my family that I loved. I was only three years old, but I remember getting the feeling of "love" from Tapestry.

I was born at the tail end of the 60s, and remember the early 70s because of Carole's music. When I was a baby, my mom would quiet me by leaving the radio or television on. By watching the t.v. or listening to AM radio, I was in constant contact with Carole. I just didn't know it yet.

I heard Carole's songs on the Monkees' television series. Remember "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Sometime In The Morning?" Those are part of Carole's canon. She co-wrote "Sweet Young Thing" with Mike Nesmith and her writing partner (and then-husband) Gerry Goffin. She wrote the title track for the Monkees' movie Head, as well as the beautiful soundtrack song called "As We Go Along."

On the radio, Carole's music took the form of "Chains" by the Cookies (and the Beatles), "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" by the Shirelles, and "The Loco-motion" by Little Eva (and Grand Funk Railroad), among others. Did I mention that Aretha Franklin's hit "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" is also a Carole creation? It's true.

I don't recall who brought Tapestry into the house, but it was on the turntable for a long time. It was played repeatedly, and the more it was played, the more I fell for Carole and her album cover. Her music, to me, sounds like "love." I can't explain it any other way. I remember her music made my heart change rhythm. My heart raced through "I Feel The Earth Move," and slowly fell back to normal for "It's Too Late."

I used to rock my feet to the song "Smackwater Jack." I loved the way Carole sang the word "shotgun;" it made my eyes involuntarily flutter. Her songs "Way Over Yonder" and "You've Got A Friend" really melted my "little kid" butter, and made me cry. The title track caught my ears years later, when I was old enough to understand it from a musical point of view. Try it sometime!

Did you know she also wrote "Don't Bring Me Down" by the Animals, as well as "One Fine Day" by the Chiffons? "Up On The Roof" by the Drifters and "Some Kind Of Wonderful" by both the Drifters and Grand Funk Railroad are hers, too. Yup! "Go Away Little Girl," the hit for both Steve Lawrence and Donny Osmond, was co-written by Carole. She can also lay claim to "Wasn't Born To Follow" by the Byrds and "Hi-De-Ho (That Sweet Ol' Roll)" by Blood, Sweat and Tears. Impressive, eh? I think so, too.

I'm digging the album right now, and I'm listening to "Beautiful." To this day, I still feel the same message it sent to my young ears all those years ago. You are, indeed, "as beautiful as you feel." One of my all time favorite love songs is "Where You Lead." The sentiment is heart-felt. The vocal arrangement still makes my ears prick right up.

Did you know that "Where You Lead" is the theme song for the series "The Gilmore Girls?" Yup, and it is performed by Carole and her daughter Louise. Check it out! Yes, Carole is everywhere.

Happy birthday, Carole. Thanks for the music, and the love.

When Dave and I were in Las Vegas for part of our honeymoon, we strolled by a hat store. I've tried on hats here and there, but I want to wear more hats to protect my porcelain skin from the sun. I tried on a hat, and it was really tight on my head. Odd, I thought. I have a coupla hats...I know I can find one that fits!

Not a single woman's hat in the store fit my large head.

But my head doesn't look larger than normal!! I swear!

The only hats that fit me were cowboy hats. Guess I'll have to either get melanoma or change my image.

Suspects haven’t been charged; politicians shielding them from prosecution.
ISTANBUL, September 4

Suspects haven’t been charged; politicians shielding them from prosecution.

ISTANBUL, September 4 (Compass Direct News) – Four Pakistani Muslims killed an elderly woman with an axe over a dispute with her husband, who has been unable to prosecute them due to his low social status as a Christian.

Case workers said the alleged culprits targeted the couple for theft and later murder because they believed Pakistan’s legal system would not prosecute them for murdering Christians. The suspects’ connections to mafia and national politicians further emboldened them, they said.

“The Muslims assume the Christians are sheep and don’t have any weight,” said Sohail Johnson, case worker and chief coordinator of Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan (SLMP), a Non-Governmental Organization that supports Christian prisoners throughout the Punjab province. “The culprits thought, ‘[The Christians] have no voice. Nothing will happen if we do something,’” he said.

Noban Bibi, 65, was killed on July 2 in Pakistan’s eastern Kasur province in the village of Khraper.

The dispute that led to her murder started in January, when two men stole money and gold items from the couple.

According to a First Instance Report, Yaqoob Shareef and Hadayat Ali broke into the house of Dara Masih, 85, while his wife was away in Lahore. They stole gold ornaments and 15,000 Pakistan rupees (US$200).

Masih demanded they return the stolen goods or he would prosecute them. The alleged culprits then began threatening to kill him.

On July 2 at 2:30 a.m. Shareef, Ali, and two unknown persons entered their house and killed Bibi with a pickaxe.

An autopsy obtained by Compass said Bibi had multiple lacerations on her head, some nearly four inches long.

Johnson of SLMP said the alleged culprits believed they wouldn’t be prosecuted due to their connections to politicians and mafia.

Shareef, 36, and Ali, in his late 20s, are members of a criminal organization and have connections with local and national politicians that they are using to leverage the criminal justice system, said Shazhad Kamran, an SLMP case worker.

“In Pakistan, politicians always need criminals to assert their power in an area,” Kamran said. “They always depend on criminals, and criminals depend on politicians to save them.”

Bribery and ‘Dissimulation’

Masih nevertheless registered the murder with the local police. He could not convince local police officer Muhammad Akram to arrest Shareef and Ali, according to an SLMP report, because Akram received a bribe requiring him to threaten Masih to drop charges against them.

Masih then took the case to a district police officer in Kasur, who arrested Ali and Sharif. The two suspects, however, have not been formally prosecuted.

When the SLMP’s Johnson and Kamran approached Sub-Inspector Aslam Pistooly and Investigation Officer Malik Mansab Ali on Aug. 2, Pistooly claimed the two suspects were not guilty. To prove this, he said the accused would swear an oath of innocence in front of prominent Muslims at a mosque, the report said.

Johnson and Kamran refused the offer for the suspects to do so, stating that swearing an oath at a mosque is not a part of Pakistani criminal investigation proceedings.

Pistooly then became angry and told Johnson and Kamran, “If you are not satisfied that Muslims will go into the mosque and swear they are innocent, then if you can go into the church, put your hand on the Bible, and swear they are guilty, then I will make legal action against him,” according to Johnson.

Speaking by telephone from Kasum, Investigation Officer Ali, who was at the Aug. 2 meeting, said swearing an oath in a mosque as proof of innocence is illegal under Pakistani criminal law. Asked if Pistooly had asked the culprits to testify in a mosque, he told Compass he could not confirm it.

“I have not compelled any person to swear an oath in a mosque, and Pakistani law does not permit it,” he said through a translator.

The SLMP case workers said the Muslim suspects wanted to swear an oath at the mosque to take advantage of an Islamic tradition that allows accused men to give false testimony when under threat.

Known as Al Taqiyya (dissimulation), this concept allows Muslims to conceal the truth at a time of danger to save themselves from physical or mental injury. In some traditions, Al Taqiyya can only be used when one is wrongfully accused.

On Aug. 4 Punjab Minister for Human Rights and Minority Affairs Kamran Michael transferred the case from the district police office to the Karsur superintendent of police.

The SLMP case workers met with Kasur Superintendent of Police Rana Shahid Ahmed on Aug. 18. In their first meeting he was uncooperative and pressured Masih to drop all charges against the two suspects, the report said.

Johnson said he believes justice will not come easily for Masih because the case has become an issue of pride for local Muslims. Members of Parliament are supporting the alleged criminals and putting pressure on police to find them innocent, he said, “just to save the skin of Muslims.”

The SLMP is now trying to move the investigation to the Criminal Investigation Agency. It will first file a complaint in a lower criminal court against the alleged culprits and police for not registering the case.

Kasur is an agricultural city located in the Punjab province with a long Islamic history. The area contains radical conservative Muslim elements, such as members of Jamaat-Ud-Dawa, a Pakistani charity that the U.S. State Department designated a terrorist organization in 2006.

In recent years Christians in Kasur have faced charges of blasphemy against Islam, torture and forced conversion.

In July 2007 Catholic prisoner Dil Awaiz was tortured, barred from teaching Bible classes to fellow Christian prisoners and placed in solitary confinement. He was released in April this year.

Human Rights and Minority Affairs Minister Michael spoke to Christians in Kanganpur, 50 kilometers (31 miles) southeast of Kasur, on Friday (Aug. 29). He said the government was taking every step to protect minority rights, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.

Report from Compass Direct News

Na, jelentkezem is egy új bejegyzéssel, ami ezúttal egy remek groove/thrash bandáról szól. Annak is az eddigi legjobb albumáról. Machine Head - The Blackening.

A Machine Head történelmében volt egy krízispont, amikor is nu metalt kezdtek játszani. Ennek következtében a legtöbben lemondtak róluk.

“A stone, which the ones who build rejected,
it is to the head of the corner.”

“A stone, which the ones who build rejected,

it is to the head of the corner.”

Though this translation is awkward and unfamiliar, I wanted to translate it more literally to retain the force of the idiom that is employed. Yet first, note that this is one of the most quoted Old Testament verses in the New Testament. It is quoted verbatim in Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10, Luke 20:17, Acts 4:11, and 1 Peter 2:7. Paul also paraphrases this verse in Ephesians 2:20, though, when Paul paraphrases the idiom about the “head of the corner, he uses the Greek word ajkrogwniai√oß (akrogoniaios), which can either mean “cornerstone” or “capstone.” Paul retains the meaning of the idiom (being the most important stone in a structure) though some of the force of the idiom is lost.

Before we look at the idiom itself, it is worth noting another important, though very subtle, difference between a literal translation and how we usually see the phrase translated. You will notice that I have translated the beginning of this verse as “a stone” rather than “the stone.” Neither the Hebrew nor the Greek translations of this passage contain the definite article (“the”) before the word for stone. Though this may seem like a very minor point to make, its connotations are sweeping. The implied thought, when the definite article is present, is that there is only one stone that the builders have rejected. Yet this is not the case! Indeed, one of Jesus’ great criticisms against the Jewish leaders is that they were constantly rejecting the prophets, murdering them because of the witness they bore.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones the ones sent to it. How often I have wanted to gather your children in the same way a bird gathers the chicks under its wing—and you would not! Behold! Your house is left to you desolate! For I say to you, you shall not see me from now until you should say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

(Matthew 23:37-39)

The fact is that the psalmist understood the nature of his people when this prophesy was made, and indeed, he did not place the definite article to leave open the condemnation of those builders who were rejecting the multiple stones offered by God.

This does not mean, though, that there were more than one cornerstones intended by God for Israel. The idiom that follows, “the head of the corner,” is clearly speaking singularly of the Messiah who would come—hence the New Testament writers’ application of this passage to Jesus. This is a standard technique in Hebrew poetry, to go from a broad concept to a narrow concept, to go from the general to the specific. The picture presented to us is that of a huge heap of rejected stones, one of which, one very special one of which, is the promised Christ. What sweeping condemnation this is against the leaders of Israel for their rejection of our Lord!

So what of this language of the “head of the corner”? In context, we usually simply translate it as “cornerstone,” but I think that the value of the idiom is that it forces us to see the implications of Jesus’ position in terms of the church. The word that we translate as “head” is the Hebrew word varo (rosh), which refers to something that is first, chief, or primary. Jesus as the head of the corner is the stone that is placed first, apart from which no other stone can be laid. It is because of Jesus’ pre-creational covenant with the Father to sacrifice himself on behalf of the elect as their mediator so that God would not enter into eternal judgment immediately after Adam and Eve fell. There would have been no church, old or new, apart from Christ. Hallelujah for that promise! Yet, at the same time, do not miss what that means for us today as the church. Our very existence is based on Jesus Christ. That means that all we do as the church, both individually and corporately, must be seen in terms of that relationship. What we do must be judged not on the basis of how well it happens to work, but on the basis of how faithful it is to Jesus Christ. As Americans, we tend to be a rather pragmatic people, but when stones must be conformed to a cornerstone, what is true and right becomes far more important. Too many churches compromise the truth to get things accomplished, but it is far more important, as believers, to be interested in doing what is right and not what may seem to work.

So what about the rest of the idiom? The word for corner is hN"Pi (pinah), and is a word that can be used in a variety of ways. Primarily it speaks of a corner of a wall, and that is exactly how we normally interpret it in this psalm. Christ is the cornerstone, it is on the basis of his position that all other stones are laid. No stone can be part of the church if it is not laid in alignment with Christ, etc… It is also worth noting that structures get their strength from their corners, thus Christ presents himself as a strong corner upon which the rest of the church gathers its strength. In addition, the word hN"Pi (pinah) is often used figuratively to refer to one who is a leader amongst the people (see 1 Samuel 14:38). Understanding the idiom in this way would present Jesus as the first or chief leader amongst the people of the church. Either way you understand it, the force of the idiom strikes home in a mighty way. We may function as part of the church, but only in our relationship to Jesus Christ—he is our cornerstone and our chief leader. He is the basis upon which all we do must be ordered. He is the reason for our very existence.

Beloved, we have a tendency to run off ahead on our own paths, seeking after our own visions of grandeur. The problem is that often these things are not in alignment with the cornerstone that has been laid long ago (before the foundations of the earth!). Yet, loved ones, when you are building a structure out of stones, it is not the stone that tells the builder where it should be placed—the builder has the arbitrary right to place the stone as he wishes. So too with God, the master builder of the church and of our lives. Sometimes we have a tendency to look over the fence at the greener grasses that lie out of our reach. There is a reason why we have been set where we have been set—trust the master builder’s reasoning—seek to fulfill God’s design for your life and forget about the flights of fancy that will do nothing more than feed your ego.

Christ is made the sure foundation,

Christ the head and cornerstone,

Chosen of the Lord and precious,

Binding all the church in one;

Holy Zion’s help forever,

I may have just attempted to illegally cross the border between Burkina-Faso and Ghana, but my African adventures had just begun. Honest to God, if the editors hadn’t stopped printing these, citing concerns that the stories “weren’t true,” I would have spent my entire semester writing these travelogues. Here comes part two in the continuing drama that was my semester abroad.

Dan Continues Traveling in Africa, And The Big Murray Head Joke Begins

Seriously. You know nothing of life. I thought I had seen some shit. Yeah, I took a dump on my friend Ben’s car. Yeah, I used to daily smoke joints with a one-armed Vietnam vet who lived next door to me. Yeah, I got high with a guy who killed a man (self-defense).

Until this week, I knew nothing. As you may recall, last week, Paramonga and I were attempting to flee to Ghana to avoid “religious persecution.”

Well, we almost made it to the border. About 20 km from freedom, our bauxite truck got boxed in by some Ghanaian militiamen. I tell you, there is no experience quite as disempowering as being dragged from your cozy bauxite truck, blindfolded, and thrown into a van at gunpoint. Paramonga was very agreeable publicly, but when we got a moment alone, he confessed that he felt it was a bit excessive to blindfold a man with two glass eyes. I agreed.

I thought we were dead for sure, but about 42 hours into our captivity, one of the militiamen approached me with an offer. About 42 hours and 5 minutes into our captivity, I realized that Paramonga’s cousin had set us up. My head was spinning, and I started to question everything, specifically whether or not the cousin was actually in the bauxite business. The militiamen took my laptop which contained lots of sensitive information (porn), and told me I would only get it back if I played along.

It turned out that the militia had recently been taken in a confidence scheme by a British man who only was identified as “MH.” He proposed money-laundering and tax-evasion schemes to the militia, and when they appeared to be working, they trusted him implicitly. They should have known better. Six months later, he was snug as a bug in a rug in Bangkok with $18 billion of the militia’s budget.

As MH was personally acquainted with the militia and all their members, none of them could possibly get close to him. That was where I came in. I was unfamiliar and had a naïve, innocent quality I could use to my advantage. Paramonga’s cousin is a goddamn snake.

All things considered, I decided to take on the challenge of retrieving the militia’s money and getting sweet revenge. I had no desire to spend one more hot second in Africa, and plus, I have always had a raging boner for the idea of the seedy Bangkok underworld. I wouldn’t get to experience the nightlife, however, as the militia told me that I would only have one night to track down MH. To make matters worse, I found from reading his dossier that MH was quite a devotee of chess, and (to quote a former associate) “he gets his kicks above the waistline.” No drugs, no hookers, no hookahs, no drinking blood, no fun. When I told Paramonga about this, he suggested we make a break for it. In the end, calmer heads prevailed, and we decided to take on the mission. I wanted my porn back, and Paramonga couldn’t find any booze at the militia compound.

There are real problems with a 600 word limit, namely, that I can’t include all the details I would like. In this case, I think it’s a plus. The trip was gruesome. We searched every chess room and eventually found MH. I thought we were going to negotiate with him, but unbeknownst to us, the militia had followed our every move, and when we made contact, they stormed in, guns blazing. Every chess board was covered in blood. There were bodies everywhere. Last week, I was a hard man. Today, I’m humble.

Paramonga and I stowed away in the first boat we could find. It was bound for Japan. I want to go home. Paramonga says he feels like a new man. He says he may never go home. We’ll see where the wind takes us.
