When Intel introduced the Atom processor and the concept of netbook and nettop,  many people in the industry was skeptical.   I remember watching Sean Maloney, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of Intel with Jonney Shi,  CEO of Asus Tech showing off the first netbook prototype on stage in IDF Taiwan 2007 more than a year ago.   At that time, many people thought of netbook as a toy.   No one, including Intel themselves, expected the take off rate one year later.

The biggest fear in the industry today is whether netbooks will cannabalize mainstream notebooks.   Intel positioned netbook pretty ideally - it is supposed to be for those who only do simple things with their PC, like surfing web and writing emails.    It is also a good second PC for those who frequently travel.

The problem is for the past three decades,  leaders in the PC industry has successfully trained end users to look for faster CPU, bigger hard disk,  better graphics,  bigger screen size, etc. when they buy a PC.   The reality is PCs have over shot the true demand of many users for a long time.   However,  the industry kept pumping out better specs in order to keep the selling price from falling too fast.   Netbook broke that paradigm.

Intel is right in saying that those who need to do simple things don't really need that sophisticated a PC.   However, it is also true that most users belong in this category.   In reality,  an average user doesn't really need a powerful CPU nor a big HDD nor a high resolution graphics card.    Netbook actually is a great value proposition for a lot of people.

I bought myself a notebook some months ago just to test it out.   I was pleasantly surprised that even as a power user,  I can do most of my daily work with it and even watch youtube.  The only problem is the 8.9" screen is too small, but normally I connect it to my 22" LCD when I'm at home.  So there's very little difference between that and my full featured notebook unless I need to do more heavy duty stuff.      This is truly a classical example of innovator's dilemma.

The nightmare for all the PC component makers will start when enough users realize the power of netbook is good enough for them and they start to expect notebook to be priced at the $300 - $500 range.   This will pull down the price range for the entire notebook segment.    A Centrino CPU costs around $80 to $100.  Now, the Atom costs $25 or less.   Motherboards,  LCDs,  and O/S for netbook all came down in price signicantly and hence OEMs as well as users are expecting other components like HDD to follow.

On the average, HDD for the notebook PCs costs around $45.   That $45 used to be a much smaller percentage of a notebook PC BOM cost, but now it is the second most costly component next to the LCD.   HDD in a netbook is much more expensive than the CPU,  the motherboard, the graphics,  or the operating system.   This puts signficant pressure on the HDD vendors to provide a low cost product or else they will see their margin erode very quickly.    I can see the HDD vendors race to the bottom in this segment very quickly.   In the meantime,  netbook opens up new requirements for lighter and thinner HDD, both which add cost to the design.

In the longer run,  the netbook trend will favour SSD.   Some in the HDD industry are saying "That's not true.  More and more netbook models come with HDD instead of SSD".   Well that's true ..... for now.   The reason is the cost of SSD is still prohibitive.    In order to fit the budget,  only 4GB to 16GB can be used.    That's still too small even for moderate PC users.    When 64GB SSD falls to $45 or less, which is similar to an average HDD price for mobile PC, we'll see PC vendors start to adopt SSD in a much bigger way.

In addition,  the current generation of SSDs are still not delivering the promised benefits.    Therefore, when users see that they are not getting a better experience with SSD but they have to pay a much bigger price for it or have to make do with tiny capacity,  many of them will choose HDD over SSD today.

However, as I mentioned before,  I feel the tipping point for SSD will happen in 2011 or 2012.   That's when the SSD prices will reach sweet spot and presumably many of the technical issues will be resolved.

If we look at Intel's forecast :

The market for Atom based mobile device will grow to pretty significant size in 2012.   That's when the HDD vs SSD battle will really heat up.

Another trend that the HDD vendors must watch out for is the fact that Intel pretty much controls the PC hardware architecture.  It is conceivable that Intel will try to move SSD closer and closer to the CPU overtime.   While HDD is still stuck at the south bridge with most other peripherals,   Intel is championing the Open Nand Flash Interface (ONFI) which can enable SSD to eventually jettison the archaic HDD interface such as SATA and adopt something that delivers much faster performance and interface directly with the CPU, just like DIMM.    When that happens,  HDD will be at a signficant disadvantage compared with SSD.

Therefore,  HDD vendors should feel paranoid about the trend.   They should develop a lower cost HDD as fast as they can,  before SSD reaches its sweet spot pricing.   On the other hand,  they should also spend more effort enabling applications that fill up storage space quickly, such as video.    If HDD vendors continue to focus solely on delivering bigger capacity,  they will find themselves racing each other over the cliff.

As the cliche says it well.... Only the Paranoid Survives !

So... the question is will SSD replace HDD?   My simple answer is - most probably.   The real question is when and in which markets.     I believe SSD will start to encroach in a significant way into HDD's primary market, which is PCs in about 3 years.    I will explain my view later.       However, it doesn't mean the end of HDD because there will be many new applications and markets where HDD will thrive while SSD will not play well.    I will reserve this topic for future articles.   For now, let's focus on why I think it's a matter of time SSD will replace HDD in PC and server and when exactly that will happen.

Many of the arguments I read in the media focus on cost per GB and performance.    The pro-HDD guys will say on a cost per GB basis, HDD will continue to outrun SSD for foreseeable future and the pro-SDD guys will say, that's true but the performance for SDD is much better.

The truth is HDD's cost per GB will continue to be much lower than SSD.  For example, the average price per GB for an MLC based SSD is between $2 to $3, whereas for PC HDD, that'll be between $0.25 to $0.4.   However, we cannot conclude that because of the 10x price delta, therefore, user will continue to choose HDD over SSD.   The critical question is - how much an average user is willing to pay to get "good-enough" capacity for his or her PC.   If we agree on that approach,  then the first thing to look at is what is "good enough".

I found a pretty good chart to illustrate this point from a slide by Samsung presented in the Flash Summit 2007.

The chart above may be counter intuitive to some but it's true if you think about it.   The % of HDD that is actually been used decreases over time.   Reason is simple.   HDD in PC doubles in size for the same price every 18 months or so.   Thanks to the speed that the HDD vendors are able to pack more capacity to the same physical dimension,  users are able to enjoy more capacity without paying more.   However, over time, more and more HDD space is left unused.

I did an informal survey myself - I asked around people I know how many GBs have they used in their notebook PC.  On the average, it's between 30G to 50G,  and these are people in the IT industry and supposedly heavy PC users.   I have also seen reports that says more than 98% of commercial users use less than 100GB of HDD.     The average notebook PC comes with 250GB and desktop PC with 320GB.  Very soon we will see the average HDD in PC at 500GB or more.

The HDD vendors are so used to competing with each other primarily on one thing and that is first to market with the largest capacity.    None of the HDD vendors pay much attention to the fact that what they are making is already more than good enough for their primary customers.    This is a great topic for another article to talk about what should the HDD industry do,  but for now,  it's pretty evident that if an alternative technology can either lower the cost for the "Good-Enough" capacity or provide other benefits that users truly value while offering the "Good-Enough" capacities at around similar price ranges,  many if not most users,  will switch.

Therefore, what's good enough?   I would say 128GB is probably more than good enough for majority of the notebook users and 250GB for desktop users.   Let me focus the discussion on notebook users as I believe they will appreciate other benefits from SSD more than desktop users and hence will be first to convert.

Let's assume today's price per GB for SSD is $2.50 and the cost goes down 50% every year.  By 2011, $0.3 and a 128GB SSD will be less than $40.   It will be at the same price as an average HDD in mobile at that time, although for that price,  one will be able to get about 500GB of HDD.  Then the million dollar question is how many users will prefer a 128G SSD vs a 500GB HDD at the same price.  The answer will be whether SSD can deliver by then the promised benefits, which are faster speed, lower power and reliability.   If there is little difference in performance,  then of course, one would choose the higher capacity option but if there are appreciable benefits while delivering good enough capacity, then the migration to SSD will happen.

The pro-HDD guys will say - well, so far SSD has not really delivered real-life benefits despite showing promises in benchmark tests.    That's to a large extent true.   The issue is mainly due to the immaturity of SSD and how the operating system is designed.   However, over time many of the issues such as wear leveling, parallel access, system caching etc.. will be resolved or at least improved.   Currently we are seeing promising improvements in all these areas from the second generation SSDs that were recently announced.   HDD has gotten more than 30 years of head start,  it is very reasonable to for SSD to take the next 3 years to stablize itself.

So, net net,  my view is in the short term, meaning in the next 2 to 3 years, the SSD's encroachment into the mobile and desktop PC market will be minimal.   The tipping point will come in year 2011 or 2012.   However,  the dynamics in the server world will be quite different.   The value proposition of SSD in the tier 0 storage is so compelling that I believe the adoption of SSD will be much quicker.    However, in the context of the total HDD TAM, the server storage is only a small fraction.

What should a HDD vendor do?   Well,  first of all,  I don't think any of them are paranoid enough to begin with.   They are still in denial mode and hoping that the tsunami will not hit for a while.   They should know that hope is really not a good strategy.   I believe they have 3 years and 3 years is a pretty short time to get their act together.  Either they will have to get into SSD and have a real competitive strategy against big boys like Intel and Samsung or find new applications that consume TBs of storage fast enough to replace the volume they will stand to lose in the PC segment.   In later blog articles, I will talk about my views on what can be done in this area.

You may be thinking, what would I need 320GB for?  Well, I upgraded to a 160GB HDD at the PS3 launch, and I only have 11GB left, so it's time to upgrade AGAIN.  My suggestion is to upgrade once, and make it BIG.  You do NOT want to upgrade twice like I have to.  The PS3, much like the PS2 and PSOne, will have a 10 year lifespan, so even if it may not seem it now, you WILL eventually need some extra storage on your PS3.

Laptop von ONE kann XP nicht booten

Ein bekanntes Problem bei der Installation von Windows XP auf Notebooks/Laptops der Firma ONE (Brunen IT) ist die Meldung, dass kein HDD (Harddisc Drive = Festplatte) gefunden wurde. Die Installation von Windows XP ist damit nicht möglich.

Mögliche Fehlermeldungen:

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer

Der Grund liegt darin, dass normalerweise Windows Vista vorinstalliert werden würde. Verzichtet man beim Kauf aber auf das Betriebssystem, weil man ein bereits im Besitz befindliches Windows XP installieren möchte, bricht die Installation trotz originaler Windows XP CD ab. Windows Installer behauptet, der Laptop hätte keine Festplatte. Dafür gibt es aber eine einfach Lösung!

Übrigens: Die gleiche Problemlösung funktioniert auch, wenn der Laptop mal spinnt und beim normalen Hochfahren das korrekt installierte Windows XP nicht startet. Aus unerfindlichen Gründen setzt er sich auf die unbrauchbare Werkseinstellung zurück und bootet plötzlich wieder nicht.

One Laptop/Notebook für Win XP Installation vorbereiten

Fährt der Laptop hoch, gleich zu Beginn die F2-Taste drücken. Widerholen Sie das in kurzen Zeitabständen bis der blaue BIOS-Bildschirm angezeigt wird. Der ist unverkennbar, auch wenn Sie soetwas noch nie zuvor gesehen haben. ;)

Hier funktioniert keine Maus, also steuern Sie mit der Tastatur. Die Befehle hierzu erkläre ich sofort, aber sie stehen auch im BIOS-Bildschirm auf der rechten Seite.

Mit den Pfeiltasten auf der Tastatur des One Laptops setzen Sie die Menümarkierung auf den Punkt "Advanced" und bestätigen mit der Eingabetaste.

Wieder mit den Pfeiltasten (hoch runter) wählen Sie den Unterpunkt aus der Liste, der ungefähr so lautet (ist je nach Gerät leicht unterschiedlich): "Onboard Devices Configuration" - Das mit Eingabetaste bestätigen.

Im nun geöffneten Auswahlfenster bewegen Sie die Markierung mit den Pfeiltasten auf [IDE] und bestätigen mit Eingabetaste.

Das ist schon alles und Sie können das BIOS-Setup mit Druck auf die F10-Taste (Save and Exit = Speichern und Verlassen) beenden.

Wenn jetzt der PC neustartet und die Windows XP Installation an die Stelle kommt an der sie zuvor immer abgebrochen hat, erkennt sie die eingebaute Festplatte und Sie können XP ganz normal installieren.

Ist Windows installiert müssen Sie noch Treiber nachlegen, wozu Sie allerdings aufgefordert werden. Die Treiber finden Sie auf der von ONE.de mitgelieferten Treiber-CD-Rom und zum Teil auch im Internet. Das dauert eine gute Zeit und kann unter Umständen nerven - einfach Musik anmachen und 'nen Tee trinken ;) Ich leg mir auch immer ein Buch bereit, in dem ich während den Installationen schmöker.

I sometimes don't download files into the PC after a photo shoot. Hey, there's still lots of space in the card... so I malas lah.

One find day, I removed the card for a few days. When I re-inserted it into the camera, there was no photos in it despite it showing less memory space. I suspected some thing wrong... but the heck with it, I was rushing off to the Viennese Ball practice. So I went 'round shooting the practice session. Setibanya di rumah... I couldn't open the files. Had to connect through the camera and copy each file one-by-one. Then try to open them to check their integrity.

Well, the Viennese Ball practice photos are all A-OK. But photos taken during Hui Shan's wedding was corrupted beyond my salvage. Arrrrgh...!!

In desperation, I connected my Nexto back-up HDD to the PC and check if any of previous photos were backed-up. Nasib baik I've downloaded the files. I tell you... the Nexto is a superb device.

See the CF card being inserted into it for back-up/transfer purpose? There's another slot at the left side (of the device) for Memory Sticks and SD Cards; and a USB port at the bottom to back-up from cameras or USB sticks. And look ma... only one button. Every thing is done through that 1 button! One Ring Button to rule them all!

I've tried backing-up files from my phone into it. It works! Though it only backed-up the MicroSD in the phone. It can even transfer files from the HDD (inside the device) to USB sticks or memory cards --- saves me the trouble of burning CDs for everyone.

Beside wiping your arse after you poo, there's nothing the Nexto can't do. As long as the other device has a USB plug, it will work its magic. (If your arse has a USB port, it'll gladly back-up your arse too! X^D ) And, oh... the speed in which it would back-up your arse...

It's a d@mn useful device, considering that flash memories are very prone to data corruption. While other external HDD casing will only cost about 80 Ringgit, the Nexto will burn a 499 Ringgit hole in your wallet for the SATA version (without HDD) from Shashinki.com.

Falando sério agora, a idéia é boa, mas aparentemente não funciona com monitores LCD. Preço? Disponibilidade? Não faço a menor idéia, ainda é só mais um bom conceito entre outros milhares de bons conceitos.

Procesor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 2200Mhz, un Front Side Bus de 800 Mhz şi un cache de 4 MB. Chiar dacă nu e chiar ultima generaţie de la Intel, acest dual-core e rapid, frate. Dacă ar fi să-i găsesc un corespondent nici nu ar trebui să caut prea mult. Cred că acest procesor e într-adevăr un Lamborghini Gallardo (Viteza maximă : 309 Km/h, acceleraţie 0-100Km-h în 4.1 secunde). Nu e cel mai rapid model, aici sunt de acord, însă comparându-l cu concurenţa sa, AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 sau TL-62 e ca şi cum ai compara acest Gallardo cu un Mustang. Binenteles şi Mustang-ul e o maşină performantă, puternică, rapidă, însă la un head-to-head ar rămâne mult în urma Lamborghini-ului. În plus, un Mustang consumă mai mult.

Display şi Video: Ecranul e un TFT WSXGA+ (rezoluţie de 1680×1050 cu un aspect ratio de 16 : 10 ), Color Shine (aşa le place băieţilor de la ASUS să numească display-urile glossy). Şi cum ASUS sunt recunoscuţi pentru calitatea display-urilor, nici acesta nu face notă discordantă. Nu e pentru profesioniştii în ale graficii (pentru care display-urile mate sunt perfecte), însă pentru muritorii de rând e excelent. Placa grafică este un GeForce 8600M cu 512 MB de memorie dedicată şi încă 1 GB prin TurboCache (adică placa video poate să „împrumute” ceva memorie din RAM). Nu e chiar cea mai bună placă video de pe piată (Nvidia a scos seria 9 în februarie anul curent, urmată apoi în iunie de seria 200, unde GTX 280 e regele), dar cu siguranţă orice joc de anul acesta va rula lin cu ajutorul acestei plăci. Aş fi vrut să compar experienţa vizuală a acestui laptop cu frumuseţea Jessica-i. Însă acest notebook nu a atins perfecţiunea, de aceea cred că se potriveşte mai degrabă imaginii Evei. Dar până la urmă e o chestie de gusturi.

Hdd & RAM : Memoria RAM e de 2 GB, extensibilă la 4. E un DDR2 la 667 Mhz (oare rotunjirea e din superstiţie?). Nici aici nu a fost atinsă perfecţiunea, DDR3 fiind succesorul care se impune rapid prin viteza sa superioară (Se ajunge şi la 1800Mhz, adică de aproape 3 ori viteza memorie notebook-ului la care se face referire aici). Însă cei 4 giga de memorie la care se poate ajunge sunt arhisuficienţi pentru cerinţele de acum şi mult timp în viitor. Oricât de lacom ar fi Vista şi alte aplicaţii, cantitatea e realmente impresionantă. Hard Disk-ul e de 200GB. Nu e mult, dar nici puţin. E destul. Şi oricând se poate suplimenta prin HDD externe. Etalonul? Teo. Nu e un foarte suplă, însă nici nu e rotofeie. Mai ales după cura urmată.

Multimedia : Notebook-ul dispune de player Blu-Ray, înlocuitorul DVD-urilor clasice. Era şi timpul deoarece DVD-ul e deja un bătrânel şi trebuie să intre în pensie după ce a servit cu onoare încă din anii ’90. Pe un blu-ray putem pune 25 GB (single layer ) sau 50 GB (dual layer). Pe un dvd normal cifrele erau de 4,7 respectiv 8,5. Diferenţa se vede de la o poştă (Când am văzut anul trecut în primăvară, în Franţa, X-Men 3 rulat pe o plasmă de pe un Blu-Ray am rămas tablou. Experienţa e incomparabilă cu cea a unui DVD normal). La capitolul audio notebook-ul stă excelent, calitatea fiind High Definition Audio. Comparabilă cu vocea Aliciei Keys.

Comunicaţii: Notebook-ul dispune de o reţea 10/100/1000 la care puteţi lega ţeava de net, de wireless 802.11a/b/g/n în caz că nu aveţi ţeavă dar aveţi vecini „binevoitori”, un modem 56K dacă mergeţi la bunici sau vă place tortura dial-up precum şi de Bluetooth pentru conectare cu telefonul şi descărcare de poze pentru hi5. Deci are de toate pentru toţi. Din punctul acesta de vedere l-aş compara cu Mircea Badea la emisiunea În gura presei . Pentru că vorbeşte mult, dar cu folos.

Alimentarea se face, atunci când nu aveţi o priză la îndemână, cu ajutorul acumulatorilor Li-Ion cu 8 celule. Acele 8 celule fac diferenţa. E o greutate în plus, dar beneficiul este o autonomie sporită. Tine mult, aproape cât o călătorie cu CFR. Cu deosebirea că în cazul notebook-urilor chiar dorim să dureze cât mai mult.

Sistemul de operare: Windows Vista Ultimate. Cel mai deştept Windows creat până acum. E Einstein-ul sistemelor de operare. Acum susţinătorii Linux sau Mac o să-mi sară în cap, însă aceştia nu fac împreună decât 9% din totalul utilizatorilor de calculatoare. De acea mă pun bine cu majoritatea.

Preţul: 11.267,54 LEI la emag. Adică 4036.8 X 1 verzişor. E doar pentru cei care chiar nu au ce face cu banii, mai ales că la doar 64% din preţ luaţi acest ASUS cu specificaţii clar superioare. Dar uneori marca face toţi banii. Eu îl recomand doar pentru cei care vor să se laude cu el.

Zaraz po premierze PS3, przez przeszło 1,5 roku takich tematów pojawiło się wiele. Jedne bardziej obiektywne, jedne mniej, zawsze mające na celu wyłonić zwycięzcę. Ja chcąc obrać inny kierunek postanowiłem trzeźwo spojrzeć na cały obraz sytuacji i napisać jak najbardziej pozbawioną subiektywnych odczuć, wyzbytą fanboystwa opinię. PS3 czy X360 – to pytanie zadaje sobie wbrew pozorom bardzo dużo ludzi, którzy jeszcze nie przesiedli się na next-geny. Dzisiaj nie będzie konkretnej odpowiedzi, będą wady i zalety obydwu systemów, tak, by każdy mógł sam stwierdzić co trafia w jego gusta, sprostaje wymaganiom.

Post nietypowy, dla niektórych po takim czasie nie mający prawa bytu. Potraktujcie go jednak jako nie test, a osobiste refleksje, z lekkim przymrużeniem oka of course. Bez zbędnego owijania w bawełnę – zapraszam do lektury.

Przez ponad rok człowiek obcował z Xbox’em 360, jednocześnie zachodząc w głowę, jak potężnym sprzętem zaskoczy konkurencja. I tak w Marcu 2007 roku z wypiekami na twarzy przywitaliśmy Playstation 3 – najnowsze „dziecko” Sony. Będąc szczerym, mój kontakt z „chlebakiem” do 1 września 2008 roku ograniczał się do podziwiania, krótkiego dzierżenia pada co by w jakąś grę lekko przyciąć i... tyle. Teraz mając w swym domostwie swój prywatny egzemplarz mogę nieco więcej o nim powiedzieć. No i zestawić go z konsolą Microsoftu rzecz jasna.

Rozmiar... ma znaczenie

Pierwsze co rzuci się w oczy (a raczej uszy;)) każdemu, to praca konsoli. Xbox 360 nawet wzbogacony o HDMI, z wydajniejszym prockiem, czarną obudową nie przestał pracować jak... no nie wiem nawet do czego to porównać. Czytnik, jak i sama konsola (wentylator, itp.) pracują cholernie głośno, podczas gdy PS3 nawet nie daje o sobie znać, czy to w momencie odczytywania danych, czy też będąc normalnie „na chodzie”. Nie mam pojęcia, czy jest to spowodowane tym, że Xbox 360 ma bardziej „upchane wnętrzności”, czy jest to kwestia kształtu obudowy... fakt jest faktem. Gra na Xboxie w nocy, nie będąc w domu samym niestety może przysparzać trudności i trzeba się liczyć z „wiązankami” słów rzucanymi w naszą stronę jak i w tą przeklętą konsolę przez zaspanych domowiczów, którzy o wiele chętniej przywitają w swych progach czarnulkę.

Design – obydwie konsole wyglądają tak jak powinny – futurystycznie i next-genowo. Ciężko tutaj zbytnio dywagować z racji tego, że jest to kwestia gustu, która konsola wygląda lepiej. Zarówno opływowe kształy PS3’ki jak i ergonomia X360 cieszą oko, stojąc obok siebie uzupełniają się – Xbox 360 nadrabia minimalizmem, PlayStation 3 zaś liczbą „wejść”, opcji i tym podobnych. Gdyby to był typowy test, tutaj byłby remis, jako że testem ów tekst nie jest – pozostawiam to do waszej rozwagi. Od siebie dodam jedynie, że PS3 mimo wagi wcale nie jest takim molochem przy X360 jakby się mogło zdawać ;).

Konsola postawiona, odchodzimy parę metrów dalej i zasiadamy w fotelu, a w naszych dłoniach znajduje się...

Pad – żegnajcie kable! – to już chyba nikogo nie dziwi. Wygoda jaką niesie ze sobą bezprzewodowość nie wymaga dyskusji, dalej jednak sprawa jest nieco bardziej skomplikowana. Pamiętacie te „ochy i achy” na temat Dual’a? O ile w kwestii DS2 mogłem się z tym zgodzić, tutaj pad od PS3 ma jeden poważny minus – triggery. Spustami tudzież manetkami zwanymi. Ni cholery nie mogę się do nich przekonać, analogowe spusty sprawdzają się stokroć lepiej w padzie od X360. Ten jednak też nie jest bez wad i każdy na pewno przeklinał d-pad, czyli krzyżak, jak i wagę bezprzewodowego pada. O ile grając intensywnie i stale na X’ie jest to praktycznie niezauważalne po jakimś czasie, tak zmieniając się między konsolami moje ręce dość dotkliwie odczuwały ten mankament w porównaniu do Duala 3. Ten pomimo wspomnianej na początku akapitu wady od 10 lat sprawdza się niezawodnie: zarówno opcja wbudowanego akumulatora (który ładujemy podłaczając PS3 pod konsolę kablem USB 2.0), zarówno wibracja, krzyżak, analogi i sam kształt są doskonałe. Jedynie boost’owanie tymi pseudo-trigger’ami we wszelkich samochodówkach zasysa i wskazuje pad od XO jako przyjaźniejszy do tego typu gier.

Pad od Xboxa 360 zasilany jest zewnętrznym źródłem, czyli popularnymi 2 „paluszkami” – bateriami AA. Owszem, można dokupić akumulatorek, który bardzo dobrze spełnia swoje zadanie, ale jest to nomen omen dodatkowy koszt, wówczas cena zestawu: bezprzewodowy pad + akumulator kształtuje się na pułapie 200zł. Dużo za dużo, jednak o wiele więcej wydamy w przeciągu kilku miesięcy latając do sklepu po baterie.

Samo rozlokowanie poszczególnych przycisków w tym kontrolerze jest niezwykle trafne – pad świetnie sprawdza się w większości gatunków gier, kuleje jedynie przy bijatykach za sprawą wspomnianego d-pada. Microsoft wkrótce ma jednak wypuścić na rynek joypad z poprawionym krzyżakiem, specjalnie z okazji premiery PES2009, więc jest może nadzieja na idealny (choć tu jest to umowne, bo nigdy każdemu nie dogodzi się w pełni...) kontroler.

HDD – wtf? Tak, konsole zostały skomputeryzowane do tego stopnia. Było to nieuniknione i tak mamy możliwość zapisywania stanów gier, ściągania dem i przeróżnych innych multimediów na dysk twardy wmontowany w konsolę. O ile każda wersja PS3 oferuje dysk w zestawie (najmniejszy to 40 gb), tak przy X360 jest to opcjonalnie. Dopiero od wersji Premium mamy dysk od razu dołączony do konsoli, nic nie stoi jednak na przeszkodzie by kupując wersję Arcade czy Core nie dokupić dysku oddzielnie. Tak czy siak jest to niemały wydatek, więc wersja zaopatrzona od razu w HDD może być lepszym wyborem. I tak: Sony oferuje nam PlayStation 3 z dyskami o pojemności: 40gb, 60gb, 80gb (wersja z Dual Shock’iem 3) i w Stanach moloch 160gb. Mamy możliwość zapisania dowolnego pliku, a sama konsola wspiera bardzo dużo formatów muzycznych, obrazów etc. Filmów nie sprawdzałem.

Microsoft od niedawna poszerzył swą ofertę i w ten sposób mamy do wyboru XO z HDD ważącymi: 20gb, 60gb i 120gb. Wybór nieco mniejszy, jak i wszechstronność dysku biedniejsza: M$ zabezpiecza konsolę przed piractwem i dlatego pliki muzyczne możemy jedynie zgrać z płyty (na podobnej zasadzie jak na PC z oprogramowaniem Windows), filmy oglądamy natomiast bez większego problemu, gdy zewnętrzny dysk (pod USB) jest cały czas podłączony. Obraz wówczas jest non-stop streamowany z pamięci zewnętrznej. Cóż, lepsze to, niż nic, sami stwierdźcie przy której konsoli dysk nie służyłby Wam jedynie do zapisywania save’ów.

Jeśli nie jedynie do save’ów, to do czego? Odpowiedź nasuwa się sama:

Multimedia – tutaj w formie rynku. Na konsoli Microsoftu jest to funkcja zwana Xbox Live!, która niedługo zostanie przemianowana na New Xbox Experience (temat na inny felieton, po więcej info na ten temat zapraszam tu), Sony ze swoją PeeStrójką zaprasza gracza do Playstation Network. Pierwsze co powinno rzucić się w oczy to oprawa – na Xboxie jest kolorowo, intuicyjnie i niezwykle przyjaźnie. Na Playstation interfejs PSN nie odbiega przesadnie od tego, który mamy w całej konsoli, więc niestety nie uświadczymy tu fajerwerków. Poruszanie się po rynku jest już inną kwestią – ja osobiście bardzo długo obcowałem z Xbox Live! i przesiadka i poruszanie się po Playstation Network było dla mnie niemiłe, dość utrudnione. Cały czas byłem sfrustrowany, że nie mogę tak sprawnie przejść do wiadomości, listy przyjaciół czy gry, jak jest to możliwe przy XO. Gdy jednak już oswoimy się z danym interfejsem, przechodzimy do multimediów. A w tym wypadku obydwie konsole mają szeroki wachlarz plików – od trailerów, przez dema, dodatki do gier, na grach arcade kończąc. PSN ma dodatkowo dla gracza gry na PSP. A i przeglądarka też jest! To bardzo duży plus dla konsoli Sony, przeglądanie YouTube czy różnych portali tematycznych gdy mamy zmęczone oczy lub nie chce nam się po prostu siedzieć w niewygodnej pozycji niesamowicie ownuje i stawia poprzeczkę dla Xbox Live!, tudzież samego Xbox’a.

Ludzie liczący się z każdym wydanym groszem muszą mieć na uwadze, że usługa Xbox Live!, a konkretniej możliwość grania przez sieć i wcześniejszy (zazwyczaj o tydzień) dostęp do nowości wymaga wykupienia abonamentu, który zmienia nasze srebrne konto na złote. Przy PlayStation Network, która oferuje nam w.w. rzeczy zupełnie za darmo Xbox 360 wypada gorzej, choć wiele mówiono o kulejących momentami serwerach PSN... dunno’.

Mamy też możliwość kupna filmów. Tutaj M$ ma silną ofertę, umowy z Netflix czy Universal Studios sprawiają, że gracze nie ruszając się z domu mogą wykupić/wypożyczyć wcale nie takie stare pozycje, które stale są dodawane, w rozdzielczości HD. Sony mimo wszystko wygrywa formatem Blu-ray i tym, że każda nowość w niedługim czasie po swej premierze znajduje się na półkach wytłoczona na płytach BR właśnie.

W zależności jak bardzo i jak sprawnie Microsoft rozwinie dystrybucję przez sieć, przekonamy się kto wygra na tym poledku.

Exclusive’y, w każdej możliwej formie... – soft to argument silnie przemawiający za kupnem konsoli. Wiele osób kupiło Xboxa 360 dla pierwszej części Gears of War, wielu wstrzymało się z zakupem Playstation 3 do czasu premiery Metal Gear Solid 4. Ci, którzy jeszcze nie kupili żadnej konsoli będą mieli w niedługim czasie trudny orzech do zgryzienia – Gearsy 2 pozamiatają na całej linii i już widzę te artykuły, w których to odwodniony, niedożywiony dzieciak po kilkudziesięcio-godzinnej sesji w GoW2 poszedł w miasto i pobawił się repliką Lancera, „bo przypominał mi Locusta”. Z drugiej strony widzę setki fanboy’ów Sony latających po mieście w maskach Helghast’ów. Tu nie ma konkretnej odpowiedzi – osobiście mogę tylko napomknąć, że X360 z nieco dłuższym stażem doczekał się już konkretnych ex’ów: wspomniany GoW, Mass Effect (tu mówię o ex’ie w porównaniu do PS3, bo jest sporo gier które ukazały się na XO z późniejszą konwersją na PC, co jednak traktuję jako swoisty exclusive dla eksboksa), Halo, Fable czy Forza. Przy PS3 sprawa jest tego typu, że te najlepsze ex’y dopiero nadejdą. Mamy co prawda: MGS4, Uncharted, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, GT5, jednak dopiero na horyzoncie widnieje: LBP, Killzone 2, GoW3 czy projekt od Team ICO. Cierpliwe osoby mogą być zadowolone, bo i tak będzie w co grać, choćby w tytuły multiplatformowe. Pozostaje też wiara w utratę statusu ekskluzywnego, jak mamy w przypadku Bioshock czy Final Fantasy XIII ;].

Ale nie tylko gry są dla danego sprzętu ekskluzywne. Microsoft wydał sporo zielonych by dodatek do GTAIV od Rockstar, jak i do Fallout 3 od Bethesda Softworks ukazał się (kolejno) tylko/najpierw na ich konsoli. W tym przypadku w temat zagłębić powinni się fani danego tytułu.

Ekskluzywne zdarzają się także akcesoria. Tu jednak twórcy wciąż się przenikają i tak niedługo ujrzymy Messenger Kit także do Dual Shocka 3, mamy od dawna kamerkę do Xboxa przypominającą EyeToya, itd.

Multiplatformy – wyścig szczurów. To, na której platformie lepiej sprzedaje się dany tytuł daje do zrozumienia, na której lepiej się sprawdza i na serwerach której znajdziecie więcej graczy. Takie GTAIV sprzedało się o prawie ¼ lepiej wśród posiadaczy Xbox’ów, najpopularniejszy FPS ostatnich 3 kwartałów – Call of Duty 4 nabyło blisko o 50% więcej osób grających na konsoli Microsoft. Kolejny, znany tytuł multiplatformowy: Guitar Hero 3 zagościł u 3 350 000 amatorów gitary mających w swym domu Xboxa 360, podczas gdy u zwolenników konsoli Sony było to „jedynie” 1 550 000. Te 3 przykłady wyraźnie nakreślają, że gry multiplatformowe lepiej sprzedają się na X360. Przyczynia się do tego polityka Microsoftu jak i fakt, że sporo twórców oddaje do dyspozycji lepsze wersje swych gier właśnie na Xboxa (przykładowo: W GH3 na X360 możemy zapraszać znajomych do wspólnej rozgrywki, podczas gdy na PS3 pozostaje nam jedynie gra z randomowymi osobami).

Funkcjonalność – konsole od dawna przestały służyć jedynie do gier, toteż i najnowsze systemy oferują nam dosłownie setki innych opcji. Prócz tych, które zdążyłem do tej pory wymienić, mamy jeszcze kilka ciekawych, które zainteresują ludzi niezwykle mobilnych.

Playstation 3 to istny kombajn – pod przykrywką skrzętnie chowa sloty na kilka rodzajów kart pamięci, posiada kilka portów USB, których ilość w nowszych wersjach została zmniejszona do 2, w każdym modelu ma HDMI. Motyw z „wsysaniem” płyt zamiast umieszczania ich na wysuwającej się tacce także jest wygodny i bezpieczny.

Xbox 360 jest biedniejszy. Nie oferuje nam slotów na karty pamięci, ma o jeden port USB więcej, dopiero nowsze modele mają wbudowany HDMI. Jak już wspomniałem, zależnie od tego, czy chcielibyśmy korzystać z konsoli jako urządzenia do podłączania telefonu, aparatu, przerzucania przeróżnych plików z różnych typów „memorek”, takiego wyboru dokonamy. Bezapelacyjnie Playstation 3 jest tutaj o wiele wszechstronniejszą maszynką.

Awaryjność?

Jak każdy sprzęt, tak PS3 i X360 mogą być podatne na awarie. Zazwyczaj „siada” jeden z podzespołów, co przy obowiązującej gwarancji kończy się sprawną naprawą usterki. Tak być powinno. Rzeczywistość bywa jednak okrutniejsza – przynajmniej w przypadku X360.

Nie trzeba posiadać w.w. konsoli by nie słyszeć o „sławnym inaczej” RRoD (Red Ring of Death) – to trzy czerwone diody, które zazwyczaj sygnalizują padnięcie konsoli (najczęściej płyty głównej). Czort ten dopadł wielu użytkowników Xbox’a, którzy mając wciąż aktualną gwarancję natychmiast kontaktowali się z polskim oddziałem Microsoft. Wówczas po udzieleniu kilku informacji, wymianie maili M$ wysyła do nas kuriera, który zabiera zepsuty sprzęt i wywozi do siedziby Microsoftu w Czechach lub Niemczech. W ciągu 2 tygodni powinien on z powrotem być cały i zdrów, co nie zmienia faktu że niesmak pozostaje a same „legendy” skutecznie mogą odrzucić niektóre osoby od zakupu tejże konsoli.

ERRATA: Zapomniałem dodać, że nowsze modele X360, szczególnie wersje Premium i Elite, które zeszły z taśmy pod koniec tamtego roku są wg. zapewnień producenta mniej podatne na awarie i wspomniany RROD. Są to, jak nie trudno się domyślić, egzemplarze które znajdziemy obecnie w sklepach. Nawet te starsze modele nie są skazane na popadnięcie w usterkę, więc każdy kolejny dzień ze sprawną konsolą nie powinien być dla Was odliczaniem w nieznane "kiedy ona padnie, jeśli dotąd tego nie zrobiła?", a jedynie powodem do zadowolenia, że trafił Wam się bardzo dobry model konsoli. Co też powinno być na porządku dziennym z obecnymi, dostępnymi w sprzedaży konsolami. To tak gwoli ścisłości.

Na koniec zabawię się we wróżkę, postawię tarota co by spojrzeć w przyszłość: obydwie konsole zażarcie walczą o potencjalnego klienta, obydwie mają silny line-up. Ale Microsoft nie wybiega tak bardzo w przyszłość jak Sony i ciężko na ten czas określić, jakie tytuły będą rządzić i dzielić na Xboxie 360 w momencie, gdy na Playstation 3 będziemy cieszyć się już grywalnym kodem Heavy Rain, Killzone 2 czy God of War 3. Jeśli chodzi natomiast o to, która konsola pożyje dłużej, to już teraz wskazywałbym plejstację – M$ już teraz informuje o zaawansowanych pracach nad następcą 360-tki, a jeśli chodzi o technikalia to PS3 jest zdecydowanie mocniejszym sprzętem, który wymaga od programistów jeszcze kilku dobrych lat pracy, by móc wyciągnąć z niej ostatnie soki.

Podsumowanie – od początku zamierzeniem tekstu było ukazanie pozytywnych jak i negatywnych cech obydwu konsol. Im bardziej nie chciałem, by artykuł ten wyglądał na swoisty test, tym coraz bardziej takowy przypominał. Specjalnie nie zestawiałem tutaj specyfikacji technicznych, by tekst był zrozumiały i trafny nawet dla laików. Napisany został całkiem obiektywnie, z lekkim nakierowaniem w jedną ze stron przy danym porównaniu. Jako, iż zbliża się boom świąteczny, ten art może pomóc Wam w dokonaniu wyboru. Każda maszyna oferuje coś ciekawego, wszelkie atuty wywołują zaślepienie i zachwyt jedynie u fanboy’ów. Ja takim nie jestem i tym samym, kończąc, stwierdzam to, co na początku: zarówno Xbox 360 giganta z Redmond, jak i Playstation 3 pionierów z Japonii jest konsolą na miarę XXI wieku, zapewniającą niespotykaną dotąd rozrywkę w dziedzinie video gier. W.w. aspekty są do Waszego wglądu, obiektywny gracz najpewniej rozpatrując skrupulatnie każdy akapit wyszedłby ze sklepu z Wii*., załamując ręce że 2 pozostałe konsole się uzupełniają, samotnie nie oferując wszystkiego (najlepiej dlatego kupić dwie, niah niah! (^^.)). Zachęcam więc do wybrania się do sklepów, a następnie zdania relacji z „łowów”. Cya!

*Której tu zabrakło, jako iż jej nie posiadam, a i lać wody nie mam zamiaru. Konsola Ninty jest nieco z boku, to całkiem inna liga, która znajdzie swe miejsce przy okazji innego felietonu ;).

Tetapi, walau laptop Acer Aspire 4720Z itu bagus tetapi ada saja kekurangannya. Kekurangannya Acer Aspire 4720z yaitu :

1.Memory hanya 512 MB

2. Saat di beli belum ada OS / Non OS

Como viene siendo habitual el producto viene con las típicas pegatinas de "Works with Windows Vista", "Designed for Microsoft Windows XP" y "Mac", y de Linux o GNU/Linux no comenta nada, aunque eso sí viene una cuarta insignia con el texto "Universal" donde supongo que nos engloban a los usuarios de Linux, BSD, Solaris y otros kernel.

Cuando he conectado el disco duro, me ha dado un error, al parecer porque el disco duro viene formateado en NTFS.

Buscando por Internet, la solución que he encontrado ha sido simplemente cargar el módulo fuse y montar la unidad con ntfs-3g.

# mkdir /media/HDD500
# modprobe fuse
# aptitude install ntfs-3g
# ntfs-3g /dev/sde1 /media/HDD500/ -o silent,umask=0,locale=es_ES.utf8

De esta manera ya se ha montado la unidad sin ningún problema, aunque aún no voy a trabajar con ella ya que primero quiere pensar en si lo dejo con NTFS, la formateo con otro sistema de ficheros, hago varias particiones, etc.
