I've had my Iphone for over a month now and have been exploring the various apps available from the Apple App store. I'm keen to try any new apps that become availbale so any recommendations or ones that i've missed please leave a comment.

Evernote - this has changed the way i store notes, scraps from magazines etc. Evernote on the Iphone allows you to write text notes, snapshot notes from the iphone camera and voice notes. These are then stored in your account on the cloud.

Byline - this is a superb RSS feed reader which i have linked up to my Google Reader account. I'm finding that i'm checking feeds whilst waiting in queues and whilst travelling. It's very easy to use and updates my Google Reader with starred items and notes that i've created.

Apps Store - i think i've exhausted most of the apps that would be of use to me via the Apps store. By exploring the different application categories you can read reviews and see ratings of any applications.

Itunes - perfect for purchasing music whilst on the hop.

Vicinity - uses your geolocation to bring up a list of local information (via Wikipedia) and also local services and amenities (banks, bars and clubs, convenience stores, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, takeaway and taxi companies). It also uses Flickr and Panoramio to search for photos taken near to your location.

Shozu - allows you to easily upload photos to the following services - BBC News, Facebook, Flickr, Google Blogger, Picasa, Twitter, Wordpress, Photobucket, AOL XDrive, Bluestring, Box.net, Buzznet,CNN Exchange, Friendster, HotSMS, Hyves, Ipernity, ITV Uploaded,Kodak (US), life.Dada.net, LiveJournal, moblog:UK, Netlog, NowPublic, Ovi, Pikeo, quipit, Reuters, Scoopt, SmugMug, Snapfish, SnapMyLife, Twitpic, Typepad, Vox, Webshots and Windows Spaces.

Segue a configuração abaixo.

Amazon knows almost everything about nearly every major purchase I've made in the last four years (or longer, I can't even remember when I started shopping on Amazon). Google knows all about who I've been in touch with, what I've been looking at, looking for and reading all over the Internet for at least the last three years, but probably even longer since I was using their search engine shortly after they first appeared online about a decade ago.

And, until recently (just today, actually), Firefox has been quietly and dependably facilitating all of my activities, communications and learning via the World Wide Web since I converted from Internet Explorer near the beginning of the millennium, around 2004 (not that I needed a good reason to leave that tired piece of reject code behind). All the way from 1.0 to version 3+ I've been a loyal supporter, fan and avid user of Mozilla's beautifully designed desktop icon, Firefox. I upgrade every chance I get. I install plug-ins. I even bought a Firefox t-shirt and some stickers.

I still love Firefox, but now I'm feeling a little... confused.

It's not like I didn't tell her. Firefox knew all about our little "thing" since it started. Since February of 2005 I've been a raving fan of Gmail, Google's (still beta, three years later) e-mail service, and Firefox was there when I signed up. When Google really started branching out into other services, especially with the iGoogle homepage, Google Docs and Google Reader, I was interested. After all, Google was a strong supporter of Firefox, so using their services wasn't a disservice to my beloved web browser at all, was it? In fact, I was supporting a supporter of Firefox.

A couple of days ago I heard that Google was on the verge of releasing their new browser, Chrome. I read a nice article about it from a source I enjoy reading (and usually trust) and decided to give it a try. I had already been using Google Desktop on my Linux laptop and Google's Picasa photo software on my Windows computer, and I love Google Earth, Google Talk and Google's release of SketchUp, so a Google web browser didn't sound all that bad.

My first impressions are a mess of mixed feelings, but overall I am both impressed and pleased. I can come up with really only one major gripe (other than that Chrome doesn't support any good plug-ins yet, like Adblock Plus) having to do with the way it handles RSS and other subscription feeds, but despite how much I do like the newcomer, my beloved Firefox is dormant even now while I use Google Docs to write this from within Chrome, and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I'm enjoying the experience, but with a touch of bitterness. Chrome is not Firefox. Mozilla took on a web browser giant and made some major headway and history, significantly impacting Microsoft's monopoly on the web browser market. Now Google wants to offer Internet goers yet another option, and I'm all for competition, but now I am forced to question my personal definitions of loyalty and support in this grand game of Hungry Hungry Web Browsers.

Would making the complete switch to Chrome be betrayal? I'm not ready for that yet, as I have fallen in love with the features many of Firefox's plug-ins offer as well as Firefox's inherent feature-set. I don't think Chrome is that far behind though, and it will probably catch up soon. What should I do? Obviously I've switched before, and it's not like I'm married to Firefox, but I had never felt loyalty for a product before like I do for Firefox - or so I thought. Perhaps what I felt wasn't loyalty at all, but satisfaction. If I can find satisfaction somewhere else, and we're not talking about marriage here (of course) then perhaps I belong somewhere else.

That's how I handled my switch from a mail service I liked (go.com, before Disney bought them - do you even remember them?) to a mail service I love. That's how we should do business, that's why there's competition. There has to be choice.

But then, I've been with Firefox longer than I've been with my wife. We go way back (in Internet years, anyhow). Just now I was doing some research to get the dates right for when Firefox was first released, and when Google really got their start. I typed "http://www.wikipedia.org" into the address bar, then hit "TAB" and it displayed this:

Then I could type in my search without ever having to load the main Wikipedia page. Of course, Firefox and other browsers have offered this function in one way or another (separate search bars, toolbars, plug-ins, etc.) but never has the workflow been this natural and easy (from later tests I found that I didn't even have to hit the tab). That's just one of many features they've included in their browser (the Omnibox).

They also snatched up the fastest JavaScript engine on the market (up to ten times than the system Firefox is running, and WAY faster than the IE JavaScript), and they set up their infrastructure to prevent many of the problems that older browsers are facing today with common viruses, bugs and page crashes that can disable the browser or even the whole computer.
For more details on the technical aspects of this new browser, check out some of these articles:

In the end, Chrome has many awesome, powerful features that make it very attractive to me. I may end up switching when they make those last couple of changes to make it just a little more attractive to this (still) loyal Firefox user.

No matter what happens, though, I'm keeping my Firefox t-shirt.

Today's link pick isn't so much a link as it is an application. But because this piece of software has a website, it qualifies. Regardless, it's pretty slick. I've decided to share Pidgin with everyone today. What is pidgin? I'm so glad you asked.

How many of us have a number of friends on different instant messaging networks? Some are on AIM, others on ICQ, maybe Yahoo!, MSN, or even Google Talk. Previously, If we want to stay in touch, we had to have each instant messaging application running on our machine. With pidgin, you run a single piece of software (did I mention it's lightweight and easy to use?) and add your credentials for each of the services. Then, you can add buddies from each network to be displayed in a single, unified buddy list. The software is absolutely seamless and works great. Each client's capability is almost exactly reproduced in pidgin, even with the option for mail notification. Best of all, it's free. No more ads with AIM, no more bloatware with Yahoo, download pidgin and stay connected with ease.

Pidgin works with the following IM services:

AIM

Bonjour

Gadu-Gadu

Google Talk

Groupwise

ICQ

IRC

MSN

MySpaceIM

QQ

SILC

SIMPLE

Sametime

XMPP

Yahoo!

Zephyr

Download Pidgin:

http://pidgin.im/

Pidgin does require Windows or any Unix based platform, but there are workarounds to get it to work on OS X. Try searching google for instructions. As an alternative, try Adium for the Mac.

That's all! Thanks, and happy computing!

There is a nice new secure VoIP phone software product calle Zfone which lets you make encrypted (secure) phone calls over the Internet. Actually, Its principal designer is Phil Zimmermann, the creator of PGP, the most widely used email encryption software in the world. Zfone uses a new protocol called ZRTP, which has a better architecture than the other approaches to secure VoIP.

Zfone is not itself a VoIP client, but lets you make secure calls with your existing VoIP client, by filtering, encrypting and decrypting all your VoIP media packets as they pass in and out of your computer.
I have no idea what the phrase “TOASTERHEAD” means, but I came up with it this morning,

I have no idea what the phrase "TOASTERHEAD" means, but I came up with it this morning, and I rather like it. I have no idea why, or how, or anything like that. All I know is that I was listening to something, and it popped into my head and I'm like oh boy! And so that is now my Yahoo Messenger status, and my Google Talk status. MSN is always what I'm listening to, so it's not on that one.

I'm trying to download the song "Dancing Days" by Led Zeppelin, but it's not working very well. So I'm doing it again. I have to get that song, then the same song, just the Stone Temple Pilot cover of it. Then I have to get "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls. Because I love that song and it gets stuck in my head. And when songs get stuck in my head, I find the best way to deal is to listen to the song that's stuck in my head. No idea why, but that's what I do. I tend to embrace the song stuck in my head, love it like it's the best song in the world, because it's the only one I can think of at the time. Most of the time though, I can think of another song when one song is stuck in my head, just because I'm fancy that way.
I remember back in like 5th grade and into 6th grade I constantly had "Dead and Bloated" by Stone Temple Pilots (yet I didn't know that at the time) and "VooDoo" by GodSmack stuck in my head. No idea why them two, but they were always there. I have both those songs now, on my iPod and such; I can still recall them whenever I need to, in my head. Not all the way through of course, but far enough.

I don't know why I'm going on like this, but I just had to share that "TOASTERHEAD" thing for some reason and then the rest sort of came out.

This morning was freaky, let me tell you. I was downstairs singing with my songs from the stereo - I plugged my iPod in and stuffs - and it was funness. Other than the part about how, like, I was really weird in my head. It was funny and all, ya, but then again kind of strange.
I'm really loopy today. That's it. Loopy used to be fun for me. Now it's still fun, but now I know that it has the possibility to get to super-wrongdom. Which is scary.
Very scary.

My song's almost done downloading. Hopefully it doesn't get that error again. I don't remember at what % it did it at, and it's at about 83% right now. It's going super fast today, cuz right now I'm not doing anything, other than downloading that song and IMs, for connectivity stuffs, so it has all the Kbps it can have, and it's at like 3. My internet connected at 33.2 Kbps this morning, I was so happy - cuz that's fast. Fast fast fast. At least for me it's fast. Timmy told me that he normally connects at 24....THAT would suck. Like, majorly.

There's five minutes till noon on the clock on my wall, while the computer clock says 12:01. Ummmm....I guess the battery is dead again, even though I just put in a new one. Well, one that I thought had some juice in it. I guess not so much.

And my song downloaded.....yay for songs!!! I like this song. Led Zeppelin is legendary, of course. DURR. I could make you a list, but it's on my MySpace, so I'm not going to waste the time. :P Now I just have to go back and get the STP version. And then the "Iris" song.

And then eventually get some lunches, but I'm not really hungry yet.
You know, Frosted Shreded Wheat thingy cereals are very filling. Which is cool and all, cuz I'm not gonna be hungry before lunch and stuff, but I mean, they're *really* filling!

I have to work on Tuesday. Well, me and my daddy are gonna go work for this one lady in Flo-Town. I don't really want to, simply because I'm being a complete lazy bum, but that's the kind of person that I am.
I don't like being lazy, because nothing really gets done, but then again, oh well. I can't be not-lazy. That takes too much work, and I'm lazy, remember!
Actually, I don't even know if I'm lazy, or just unmotivated. No idea. Can't tell.

I think I figured out what I wanna do. When I graduate, that it. Don't worry, I'll change my mind again, like I always do. But, anyway, here's my "plan."
I wanna get like a VW Bus or something like that, and just go. Live in the car and just go. I know I already had that as the plan, but oh well. I thought about getting like, a truck and a fifth-wheel or something, but that would be way too expensive, and then you'd have to deal with finding stuff for it and stuff - like the places to plug-in and whatnot. I guess it would be hard to do though, considering cars don't really have power, for like phone charging and laptop charging and stuff, but I guess I could just like, buy a few extra batteries for shit, or like I don't know. It's gonna be expensive though. I only have about 550 dollars in savings right now too. I'm gonna need a hella-lot more than that. I thought about like, being ridiculous and getting a pay-pal account and being like hey, give me like five bucks, and see how much money I could get. I don't know if I could do that thought, don't even know if I'd get any money. I thought it would be cool to try though. See if I got anything. Anyway, I could use the money, no matter what I end up doing.
Oh well....Hey, if you wanna give me like five bucks, just tell me, we'll work something out, okay?

If you are an Orkut user you probably know what I am going to talk about here. I am speaking about Transliteration, which essentially means that you can type in one language and have that converted to another language.

Google already offers transliteration in Orkut and many users know about it. However did you know that you can now chat in Indian languages in Gmail and Google Talk Labs Edition also?

Follow these steps to chat in Indian languages (currently 5 are supported) in Google Talk.

Add a transliteration bot to your friend list. There are 5 of them available currently: (en2hi.translit@bot.talk.google.com for Hindi, en2kn.translit@bot.talk.google.com for Kannada, en2te.translit@bot.talk.google.com for Telugu, en2ta.translit@bot.talk.google.com for Tamil and en2ml.translit@bot.talk.google.com for Malayalam)

      Start chatting with your friend.

Convert the chat session to a group chat and invite the particular bot (you added in step 1) to the group chat.

From now on whatever you type in english will be converted to the appropriate language by the bot. Have a look:

Chat in Indian Languages

You might have to enable Indic fonts if you dont see them correctly. Here is some more information on Indic Fonts

I am a big fan of Google labs, and have been following all their products religiously. The latest innovation from Google Labs are Google Pages, Google Sites and Google Talk Labs Edition. The former two did not impress me much. But the last one is pretty neat.

It scores over traditional Google talk, by having all chat windows open as tabs within the application window than as pop ups. This is a great help, since in my office, having too many Google Talk pop ups gives a wrong impression. Also group chat feature has now been added, allowing far more interesting discussions with all your friends at the same time, than boring personal messages to just one of them. Off course, unless you are looking for some privacy :-). It has a better interface styling and color layout. At last Google has added some color to the pane. So what if its primitive blue. And the feature, I was dying to see in Google Talk. Like Gmail Chat, one can now go invisible in Google Talk as well. Yippee !!

This edition still lags far behind the traditional client in terms of functionality, especially voice call feature is missing. I wonder, why is it still called Google "Talk"? Even the settings feature is not available. But after all this is still in Labs, and not a Release. So I am expecting some improvements before this is released.

Here is my verdict on Google Talk Labs Edition,

The Pros,

1) Great interface. Has been shaded in blue.

2) Tabs and not popups.

3) Group chat enabled.

4) Invisible mode added.

The Cons,

1) Voice calls feature missing.

2) Settings feature missing.

3) File transfer feature missing.

Here is what I suggest,

Go and try the Google Talk, Labs Edition. As more and more people use it, Google will be able to collect statistical data, that will help them to improve this product.

Visit their site for more details.

Dou risada, me informo, me aperfeiçôo e me admiro com a liberdade de expressão (e o alcance dessa expressão) que vídeos e posts no YouTube e Blogspot permitem.
