Prasanna's post on KDE 4.1 motivated me to try out the installation on my system.I was kinda bored with the GNOME desktop experience that Hardy Heron was offering. To be honest, initially I was not really sure if I could get KDE 4 running on Hardy Heron. Especially because the site clearly mentions that the platform is unstable for debian based systems(link). But this link on softpedia was just what I was looking for.

I will write a more detailed review on this after I have played around enough with this KDE release.

For now though, the desktop looks kewl! :)

its almost 3am & i am stuck waiting for my laundry to finish. i love wrapping myself up in clean/warm sheets and blankets fresh out of the drier... reminds me of when i was a kid. speaking of being a kid, how cool was nickelodeon? i used to have this routine during the summer time: wake up... get ready for the day... have some pancakes & eggs, and watch david the gnome. i loved that show. i always wanted to ride his fox, swift. anyway after breakfast, i'd go out for a bike ride with friends or jump in the pool (kiddie pool) until lunch. man that was the life. no job... no bills... just climb trees and throw water balloons at girls all day. i miss that.

I am really very new to this whole Linux thing. I dabbled and/or experimented with a distro or two a

I am really very new to this whole Linux thing. I dabbled and/or experimented with a distro or two about two years ago, but that didn't get very far. But, when I purchased my new laptop before heading off for college, I decided I would try and take the plunge. Only, this time, without Windows to fall back on. A sort of technological immersion, if you will. So I decided that my new Thinkpad would come preloaded with Linux (SLED 10, to be precise).

But SLED 10 didn't quite do it for me. As nice as it was to have everything work out of the box like that, there were just too many little things that kept me from enjoying it (a lack of Firefox 3 being very high on the list of annoyances). And so I began distro hunting. I tried the usuals: Ubuntu and Fedora OpenSuse. But none of them worked quite right for me. There were always issues of some sort, from not recognizing the correct resolution to not detecting the sound card. And, like I said, I'm new to this whole Linux thing, so going through and messing with whatever you have to mess with to fix those issues was much too daunting a task for me to undertake at the time (and probably still would be today). So I continued my search.

I had read an article once, I don't rightly recall where, about a man's journer to find an easy to use Linux Distro. I can't remember which one he ended up with, but one name in particular stuck out from his list: Linux Mint. For some reason I could remember that name (I am generally very bad with names), and so I tried it. And, for perhaps the first time in my distro hunting, everything worked right out of the box. Sound, video, wireless, everything. And, after a little bit of tweaking, I had everything set up just the way I liked it.

I suppose I should try and start with the beginning: the install was slick and easy. Not much else to say really. It's been a while since I last installed it, so there might be a few details missing from my memory. But I remember it being a relatively painless experience (I'm pretty sure it was just the Ubuntu installer. . . but it's been even longer since I installed Ubuntu, so I can't exactly remember).

But the installation isn't really very important. Oh, right. I almost forgot: it's a LiveCD. Umm, it actually works very well in LiveCD form. Oh, and there is not other option than to boot into the LiveCD to do the install. Just thought I should point that out.

[caption id="attachment_15" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="My normal desktop"][/caption]

Anyway. On to the good stuff. Mint is a Gnome based distribution, but it is rather customized, in what I consider a good way. There's only the one bar, at the bottom of the screen by default. (I actually prefer it up top, but that's just me.) Perhaps there's some sexual inuendo theree, who knows? There's a variety of themes and wallpapers and whatnot installed by default, andmany of them are actually very nice. I found myself using the Lightning theme for a bit, but then I found the Nimbus one, and I use a fusion of the two now. One of the more notable customizations the Mint team made was the mintMenu. It's really very nice and intricate and actually very powerful once you learn how to use it. It does the standard thing where it launches apps, of course. And lets you search through them in real time, too. But it also lets you uninstall applications directly from the menu interface. As in, from the enire system, and not just the menu. Now that is user friendliness if ever I saw it.

It comes with the standard Firefox and OpenOffice and all that as well. Granted, I did have to go through the repositories to get at my preferred applications in some instances, such as video player and music player and bittorrent client, to name a few. And while I'm thinking about it, since Mint is an Ubuntu based distro, it is compatible with the Ubuntu repositories.Mint also comes with proprietary codecs and whatnot preinstalled (so flash and mp3's and all that work right out of the box).

Let's see. . . was there anything else I wanted to mention? Oh, right. I absolutely love Linux Mint and use it as my standard in judging other distros. It looks nice, performs well, and does everything I want it to do. Well, that's about it, I think.

I began installing Opensolaris this morning, since I hadn't tried Solaris since leaving uni (way back!). I was quite pleased to note that Sun had upped their game a LOT since Solaris 7 with the positively fugly CDE desktop and moved to standardise on Gnome (common on numerous GNU/Linux desktops).

Based on first impressions - as I install this, ITS PRETTY! *gasp* Even more so than the standard Ubuntu 8.04 desktop! And this is from someone that has two MacOSX machines - pretty high praise. Check out some of the screens :-)

Many users think that gedit - the default text editor for the GNOME desktop environment - is a simple editor that can only do some basic editing. In reality, there is more to gedit than meets the eye. It has many features that makes it a good choice for programmers: syntax highlighting, auto indentation, bracket matching, etc. But perhaps the most important feature of gedit is its powerful plugin system. There are many useful plugins out there for regular users and programmers alike, but in this post I'll concentrate on 5 gedit plugins that are essential for programmers. I consider them essential because they can greatly increase your programming productivity and make your life easier (well, your programming life at least!).

Gedit comes with several plugins enabled by default (the list of enabled plugins varies from one Linux distribution to another). Additional plugins are available in the gedit-plugins package. In Ubuntu, this package can be easily installed by running the following command:

sudo apt-get install gedit-plugins

To access the list of plugins, select Edit -> Preferences, and then select the Plugins tab. Here, you can enable, disable, configure, and get more info about the available plugins.

1. Snippets

Reduce the amount of typing you have to do by using Snippets, the auto-text insertion tool for gedit. It enables you to store "snippets" (frequently-used pieces of text), and insert them quickly into your file. Insertions can be done using a keyboard shortcut or a "tab trigger". A tab trigger enables you to type a few characters and then hit the Tab key to insert the entire snippet (e.g. a switch statement or a for loop). The plugin comes with a number of built-in snippets for many programming languages. You can edit them and add your own by selecting Tools -> Manage Snippets.

2. External Tools

Regarded by many as the most useful one, External Tools enables you to run any external command or shell script, specifying the keyboard shortcut, the input (if any), and where to display the output. It comes with a couple of useful programs pre-installed: Build, Open terminal here, Remove trailing spaces, and Run command. You can add your own by selecting Tools -> External Tools. For example, I've added a tool that invokes the Ruby interpreter on the current file and displays the output in the bottom pane.

3. Embedded Terminal

If you are not comfortable with the command line, then you are NOT a real programmer! This plugin adds a full instance of the Bash terminal in the bottom pane of gedit, complete with your modifications.

4. Session Saver

A very useful plugin, especially if you are working on a project requiring multiple files to be open at once. Sessions can be saved and loaded from File -> Saved sessions.

5. Code Comment

Can you remember the last time you edited a source file without commenting at least one line of code? Code Comment enables you to comment/uncomment blocks of code quickly: Ctrl+M to comment and Ctrl+Shift+M to uncomment.

Remember that there are many more gedit plugins, some of which are targeted to a specific language (like Python Console, which adds an interactive Python console to the bottom pane). Feel free to try different plugins and transform gedit into an even more powerful IDE that suites your needs.

What are your favorite gedit plugins that you can't live without?

Aparece:
Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.6.7...
XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP5)...
XAMPP: Starting MySQL...
XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...
XAMPP for Linux started.

Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.6.7...
XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP5)...
XAMPP: Starting MySQL...
XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...
XAMPP for Linux started.
root@travesuras:/home/travesuras# /opt/lampp/lampp security
XAMPP: Quick security check...
XAMPP: Your XAMPP pages are secured by a password.
XAMPP: Do you want to change the password anyway? [no] yes
XAMPP: Password:
XAMPP: Password (again):
XAMPP: Password protection active. Please use 'lampp' as user name!
XAMPP: MySQL is accessable via network.
XAMPP: Normaly that's not recommended. Do you want me to turn it off? [yes]
XAMPP: Turned off.
XAMPP: Stopping MySQL...
XAMPP: Starting MySQL...
XAMPP: The MySQL/phpMyAdmin user pma has no password set!!!
XAMPP: Do you want to set a password? [yes]
XAMPP: Password:
XAMPP: Password (again):
XAMPP: Setting new MySQL pma password.
XAMPP: Setting phpMyAdmin's pma password to the new one.
XAMPP: MySQL has no root passwort set!!!
XAMPP: Do you want to set a password? [yes]
XAMPP: Write the password somewhere down to make sure you won't forget it!!!
XAMPP: Password:
XAMPP: Password (again):
XAMPP: Setting new MySQL root password.
XAMPP: Change phpMyAdmin's authentication method.
XAMPP: The FTP password is still set to 'lampp'.
XAMPP: Do you want to change the password? [yes]
XAMPP: Password:
XAMPP: Password (again):
XAMPP: Reload ProFTPD...
XAMPP: Done.

/opt/lampp/etc/httpd.conf
Es el archivo de configuración del Apache.
/opt/lampp/etc/my.cnf
Archivo de configuración del MySQL.
/opt/lampp/etc/php.ini
Archivo de configuración PHP.
/opt/lampp/etc/proftpd.conf
Archivo de configuración del ProFTPD (solo 0.9.5)
/opt/lampp/phpmyadmin/config.inc.php
El archivo de configuración del phpMyAdmin.

Comandos destacados:

Si quiero detener el XAMPP escribo: /opt/lampp/lampp stop
Y aparece:
Stopping XAMPP for Linux 1.6.7...
XAMPP: Stopping Apache with SSL...
XAMPP: Stopping MySQL...
XAMPP: Stopping ProFTPD...
XAMPP stopped.

/opt/lampp/lampp phpstatus

/opt/lampp/lampp stopftp

rm -rf /opt/lampp

This is Shagley the Gnome. He's sad because he has really big hands... and, really, that's no fun. He probably has a hard time doing gnome-y things like eating nibbles of food and flipping through books of magic. But I bet he can hitch rides on foxes really well. I'm glad I drew you, Shagley.

Ps. I'm totally copyrighting this guy.

cebp dhnq-pber 2,4 TUm

4 Tb qr ENZ

QQ 32B Tb FNGN

AIvqvn 9500 TG 512 Zb

HFO 2.0, Sverjver, yrpgrhef qr pnegrf Synfu, QIQ

L'OS m'a installé Microsoft SQL Server 2005 !

J'ai donc installé Ubuntu Studio, quel bonheur !

Okay, this is something I had been wanting to try for quite some time now. Before I begin, let me tell you that I have been a GNOME fan ever since I have used my Fedora Core 3, and KDE 3.x has never appealed to me. But since KDE 4 looked a lot different in the screenshots from its predecessors, I wanted to give it another chance. And KDE 4.1 turned out to be a bundle of pleasant surprises all the way through.

Installation:

I wanted to install KDE 4.1 on my existing Ubuntu (not Kubuntu) Hardy. This softpedia article provided a step-by-step tutorial on how to do it. And the bundle of pleasant surprises opened up right from the installation stage. The installation proceeded without a single hitch from the beginning to end, something I admit, I wasn't expecting at all. All I did was follow a few steps from that article and I was ready to login to KDE! It didn't even need a reboot! Mind you, I might be one of those luckier ones here, because as the comments in the article tell you, not all of them had everything working for them. I changed my session to KDE and logged in, and was greeted by a beautiful splash screen and an unusual looking desktop. And I was on my way to start playing with a brand new approach to using my desktop.

Things I liked:

Let's quickly get to the things I liked in KDE 4.1. First of all, the desktop looks great. And I mean really stunning. The default wallpaper's great, the color combination's good (some say it looks too much like Vista, but I am not complaining), there's a new way your desktop icons show up and overall, there's only one word to describe it: Refreshing. I quickly headed over to the start menu (or main menu or K-menu or Applicaton Launcher or whatever it is called). There was another of those surprises awaiting me. The menu is grouped into different categories with little tab-like things which switch when I hover over them. Certainly beats the hell out of GNOME's three different menus which eat up all of my panel space. And best of all, there is a search bar waiting for me to type the first few characters of the application I want to open. Kind of like Launchy built into the start menu. Next I proceeded to try out the desktop widgets. They are very similar to Google Desktop's widgets, except it is easier to dock them anywhere you want. I admit the number of widgets provided is not much, but it will only get better. I decided an analog clock will look nice on mine. Then I played around for a while with the desktop settings. Another surprise. Instead of an image, I can put a slideshow of images as my wallpaper. So I gave the path of my wallpapers directory and set the timer to change it every two minutes. You can only imagine how interesting this is going to make my computing experience (all the wallpapers I have are of pretty actresses). I headed towards the file manager now. Another thing that made me smile. A tabbed file manager, which looks like the Xplorer2 I use on Windows! Good God, I have had dreams like this! The run command brings up a tiny Launchy like window, and even does exactly the same things as Launchy, with the drop-down menu and all that. I can see KDE becoming a very useful and productive desktop.

[caption id="attachment_80" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption="KDE 4.1 Desktop (Not the default wallpaper!)"][/caption]

Things I didn't like:

Having sung praises of KDE, I must admit there are some things I didn't like. The toolbar and the titlebar of the windows look as dull as ever. Sure, you can customize almost anything in KDE, but why does such a beautiful desktop have such sad looking windows? Adding stuff to my panel and rearranging them was a major pain. The widgets moved erratically and I wondered more than once how a particular widget got there when I definitely didn't want to put it there. I breathed a satisfactory sigh only when I got all the widgets where I wanted and locked them. I won't dare to move them any time soon for sure! Another feature I didn't like was how Dolphin (the file manager) insists on opening everything on single click. Hey, I come from a Windows (gasp!) background, and I like to double-click stuff, ok? How do I change it? Also the Application Launcher (or K-menu, etc) shows me gibberish for a fraction of a second before loading my menu. Is my hardware too old for KDE 4? Maybe. I don't know.

Final thoughts:

In spite of all these shortcomings (mostly minor, as you must have observed), I have to put KDE 4.1 under the "Exceeds Expectations" category. So where does this put me, the die-hard GNOME fan? I'll put it this way: Yesterday when I was logging into KDE, a window came up asking me if I wanted to make KDE the default desktop. I thought for a moment, and clicked on "Make Default".

Don't worry, I am not saying everything is over between me and GNOME. I'll be following its releases closely, and who knows, I might switch back if it gives me a better desktop experience!
