Since I do have a bit more free time on my hands, I've been going through my cd collection and playing cd's that I haven't played in a while. One of my favorite bands of all time is Fleetwood Mac. And of course, one of my favorite songs of theirs is Landslide. Talk about a perfect 'mid life crisis' song. LOL. For me, it perfectly expresses the desire of change within life and inspires me with hope for new beginnings.

Today was a bit less hectic. Spent most of the day visiting with my folks. Since being back in Minnesota, every 2 or 3 weeks I do go over and spend the day with them - they appreciate it. It gets hard to schedule other things in my life, but it's worth every minute.

My other dog, Chance, has been suffering from some sort of allergy. This is the second year he's experiencing it. He gets so itchy, scratches himself raw and I feel so badly for him. I've started him on Benadryl this morning and it seems to be working. I can't remember exactly what I did last year, but I do remember it took a day or two to kick in. I just wish I could figure out what causes it. I've been trying to upload his pictures but for some reason it's not working. I'll keep trying to find a solution. He's my Regal Prince.

The other thing keeping me busy is Facebook. I'm not a huge fan of the social networks as they tend to confuse me more than anything, but this one is kind of fun. LOL. Just what I need - another addiction. It's amazing how the friends multiple on that website. Just a week ago, I had like 2, now I have like 12. Plus I like playing the games.

Positive thought of the day:

A friend is someone who sees through you and still enjoys the view.

This is an interesting article in The Sunday Mail, a Queensland newspaper. Light on details but it does show that Australian agents are becoming more innovative online.

http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,20797,24117506-8362,00.html?from=public_rss

Whilst Australian agents are good adopters of technology in general, suprising I have found them quite resistent to the use of web 2.0 technologies. For example, there really are very few australian agents who run a blog. When compared to the USA for example, the adoption of these technologies in Australia is very slow, and yet subscription to portals and the general realisation of the value of technology to an agency is in general very high.

As we do business around the world I am constantly impressed with the relative sophistication of agencies in Australia. I think it would be fair to say that Australian agentcies are perhaps 2nd to the USA is adoption and use of technology, but also in the professionalism of the way that real estate agencies are run. I am not sure of the reason why they are so slow to adopt web 2.0 technologies, but one thing is for sure. If Australian agents do not start to seriously look at these technologies, over the next few years they will no longer be world leaders.

There's rumors spreading throughout the Internet that Facebook.com, the popular social networking site, it looking to charge users $4 per month. The truth of this rumor is unknown, but a Facebook group is already protesting these unsubstantiated rumors.

In an interview with 60 Minutes in January, Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg did say his company wasn't making enough money. Although that could be a reason to charge a fee, these rumors have not yet been confirmed.

But, what do you think?

By Kevin Allison
Financial Times - FT.com
June 22, 2008

Facebook, the fast-growing social network, has taken a significant lead over MySpace in visitor numbers for the first time, according to one popular measure of internet traffic.

Facebook attracted more than 123m unique visitors in May, an increase of 162 per cent over the same period last year according to ComScore, a company that monitors websites. That compared with 114.6m unique visitors at MySpace, Facebook’s leading rival, whose traffic grew just 5 per cent during the same period, ComScore said.

The findings mark the first time that Facebook, launched in 2004, has taken a significant lead in unique visitors, after ComScore’s April traffic figures showed the rivals in a virtual tie. They come at a time of change inside Facebook, as the one-time upstart attempts to transform itself into a leading media company. Several members of the original executive team have left the company in recent weeks.

The departures include Adam D’Angelo, chief technology officer and personal confidant of Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s 23-year-old founder and chief executive; and Matt Cohler, Facebook’s first official hire, who was in charge of product development.

Mr Zuckerberg has appointed Sheryl Sandberg as his second-in-command. Ms Sandberg, who helped develop Google’s lucrative advertising business, is expected to play a crucial role in the development of Facebook’s revenue model.

The management changes come as the company is under pressure to justify the $15bn valuation it drew last year in an investment round with Microsoft.

Facebook is a private company and does not disclose official sales or profit figures. But people close to the company have claimed that it made $150m in sales last year. That figure is expected to grow to $300m-$350m this year as it attempts to broaden its revenue stream.

Counting unique visitors is just one way to measure the website popularity. Many sites, including Facebook, measure audience engagement by tracking the number of repeat, or “active” users of their sites, leaving out those who visit a site once and never return. MySpace claims to have about 110m active users, Facebook about 80m.
