Matlab.

So the new Poly semester has started and we’re already into lessons proper. Yup, this is one h

So the new Poly semester has started and we're already into lessons proper. Yup, this is one heck of a semester. For us it IS the semester right before our Final Year attachments, so we really gotta up our grades to better represent ourselves in the workforce in the future.

That said, I've always been lousy at my Engineering modules. Math, Physics and machinery makes no sense to me. Forget about understanding them, I'm having a hard time to even try to enjoy them. As for my Informatics modules, while I'm not exactly doing perfectly well, it's still decent enough to get if not As, Bs.

Been thinking a while and if I ever go to Uni, be it part time or full time student, I'll definitely be shoving aside all things Engineering and fully major in the IT department. A while back during Teachers' Day, I was at my secondary school talking to my teachers and they say that if I keep up my IT-related grades high enough, I can still opt for Uni even if I miss some requirements or something. It's not that I'll DEFINITELY get in but there's a good chance my diploma will be looked at and be considered. Of course I'll still have to genuinely put in effort in my Engineering modules and do whatever best to my abilities.

---------------------------------------

So during Software lessons today we had to form up pairs to do a term-long assignment. A couple of my friends wanted to pair up with me and I ended up agreeing and pairing with J, who might be the most disliked person in the entire EI course for my batch =P

I could sensed some sort of pissed and betrayed feelings from my friends. To clear things up, it was not possible to work in griups of 3, otherwise this whole situation would never have happened. Both E and Y wanted to pair with me. Honestly, I really don't mind working with either of you, but choosing one over the other would really just be unfair to other person. You both ended up working together, so all the best by the way.

Now then I am left to choose between J or K, who was absent from class for, knowing him, very likely invalid reasons. J can be a very snobbish and arrogant bastard, but I've worked with him once, and while yes, he is what I just said, he does his share of the work at least and works constructively instead of just "chionging" work to do other leisure activities. It's not that I don't like K or anything. For what it's worth, he's way more pleasant to work with than K.

But let me ask. When we're aready halfway through our Poly course, when we're that closer to our next course of life, would you seriously, seriously put your grades/diploma on the line and still have the attitude of "I dowan work with him. Dunlike the guy, only know how to kbkp. Nvm lar, partner fren. Absent a lot and slacker oso, fren fren nvm"?? Or would you actually suck it up and brush off the attitude, and work with people who are at least capable of doing work decently, not caring about their behaviour??

At some point in life, you are going to be working people that have good work attitude but bad social character. Grades and diplomas are going to reflect how much effort you put into your course, not how you enjoy and go through Poly life with your friends doing projects together happily.

So don't get me wrong please. It's not that I'm sick of working with the same people all the time or anything. Any future projects, be my guest and ask (must be careful of Bryce though cos he DAMN pro at 'chopping' me to work with him just cos he take same bus with me and his fingers so FAT and can stamp his name beside mine big big!! HAHAHA!!! =P). It's just that just now in that particular situation, choosing to work with J is the best choice. I chose J out of respect of him as a person and I didn't choose my other 2 usual friends out of respect for them as friends and not unfairly choose 1 over the other when both of them didn't even do anything wrong to me.

PETRONAS (all capitals, please) is recruiting. The online ad version of The Star isn't clear, but I think there's an Open Day from the 24th-25th Oct, 2008 at the JW Marriot, KL. I wonder why they didn't do it next door at the Mandarin. Too expensive?

It must still be a slow week, that's the only engineering job I can find.

Built back in the 10th century, the incredible well of Chand Baori, India was a practical solution to the water problem in the area. The arid climate forced the locals to dig deep for a dependable water source, one that would last throughout an entire year. Chand Baori well is 30 meters deep, it has 13 floors and 3,500 steps. Legends say that ghosts build it in one night and that it has so many steps to make it impossible for someone to retrieve a coin once it’s been dropped in the well.

First off, I hope that you use my blog and topics to start discussion threads (and maybe I make a buck or two if you find useful stuff).

Other sources of information I've used are:

Please share your favourites. I'm especially interested in a place that talks about tech challenges in Malaysian territorial waters. I need some hand holding as well :)

the groundbreaking was in sep. 2004 and its estimated to finish in any day at 2009 at estimated height of above 800 m ( maybe 818 m). and about 160 stories, with a floor area of 334000 m2. mainly the first 60 stories going to be The first ARMANi HOTEL, the next 60 stories is Apartment and the final 60 stories going to be offices. the minumum price for the chepest apartment is going to be over 1.2 million dollar, so officially its the most expensive structure in the world.

Mechanical
at the peaking time the structure need about 10,000 of cooling per hour, its about 10.2 million kg of melting ice per day.
the structure will supply 946000 liter of water per day, the electricy demand estimated to be around 32 mVA, which is equal to 360000 of 100 watt light operating at the same time, which eqwal to 20000 mo5ayam operating togather in kuwait winter :S. there will be a fire elevaer with a capacity of 5000 kg which going to be the fastest in the worl, and it is the tallest installing tower elevator in the word.

( structurally )
the concrte which is used in this structure is 230,000 m3, woow is it huge, i guess you dont know, ok i'll show you how large is it. its the weight of 100,000 elephent, its the same amount of concrete used to establised sidewalk from kuwait city to dubai which estimated to be around 1200 km +700 km to bagdad, iraq ,, oops from Duabi to bagdad, or even more. its a concrete cube of 60m height with 60 m lenght, 60X60X60.

this figure compare between the tallest builing in the wrold, i guess burj dubai will stay the tallest building in the world for 4 years until nakheel will construct there edition of the tallest buling, actually they are waiting for the final altitdue of burj dubai to building there own one.

the final shape of it will be like this. under it there will be an amazing city which going to be the golden sequre kilometer in the whole world. also there will be the biggest shopping mall in the world, which is dubai mall, actully its will ope in the 14th of this month, yeah yeah :D. i'll talk about this mall later. this is real. how do they finish the biggest mall in 4 years. mm how did they do it, mmmm actully the are using 3 shifts labor 24 hours. i'll talk about this mall later.in kuwait, back home they was builing a cars semi tunnel system in salmyah, kuwait with a length of almost 2 kilomentrs, the took about 4 years to finish it. this is how constructuion going in my homeland :D they should adoubt the Dubai version of construction, yeah they must.

Membrane Technology appears to be the most effective technique for the treatment of water and wastewater. For the efficient and cost effective consumption, however, the consumer must have some basic knowledge on membrane processes or to consult with appropriate experts in the field. As experts say, ‘Hardware of membrane processes is very simple, but the software is difficult’. In designing membrane installations, the engineers must have adequate information about the raw water quality, the degree to which the suspended and dissolved materials to be removed, and the purpose, which the treated water is going to serve.

Pressure-driven membrane processes are of four types: Microfiltration (MF), Ultrafiltration (UF), Nanofiltration (NF) and Reverse osmosis (RO). MF removes suspending particles and bacteria, UF- colloidal particles, NF- di or higher valence ions, and RO- mono-valence ions. Under identical operating conditions, water flux (flow rate per unit area) decreases sharply in the direction ‘MF →UF → NF → RO’, and increasingly high pressure has to be applied to ensure satisfactory flux. Therefore, for treating surface water for drinking purposes, water is to be freed from suspended particles and bacteria by MF. If huge amount of colloidal particles are present in raw water, treatment with UF is recommended. Treatment with reverse osmosis in such cases simply makes the process more expensive. If the underground water contains low concentration of arsenic, NF could be attempted. Seawater or surface water contaminated by saline water (e.g. in coastal areas after cyclone) or underground water with high salt contents (as in some parts of India) must undergo RO treatment to be used for drinking purposes.

Membrane modules are available in different configurations: plate and frame, spiral wound, tubular and hollow fiber. The modules are designed to ensure large specific surface of the membranes per unit volume. Selection of the type of the modules is determined basically by the raw water quality and always keeping in mind the probability of membrane fouling (a highly adverse phenomenon sharply increasing maintenance and operation cost of the installation).

‘Membrane bioreactor (MBR) for wastewater treatment’ is a revolution in the field of membrane applications. For decades, it had been presumed that membrane processes could be adopted only in clean environment, and as such water treatment with membranes usually required pre-treatment with conventional methods. In MBR-based wastewater treatment, the membranes are in direct contact with activated sludge and still successfully performing their filtration functions. This has been made possible as a result of the development of new generation membrane materials, which have better resistance to fouling phenomenon. MBR technology does not bring any change in the biological mechanism of wastewater treatment. It makes proper use of the knowledge acquired through decades-long operation of conventional biological treatment plants all over the world.

The membrane bioreactor (MBR) process that uses both a biological
stage and a membrane module has recently been developed for
wastewater treatment. The bioreactor and membrane module each
have a specific function:

1. Biological degradation of organic pollution is carried out in the bioreactor by adapted microorganisms;

2. Separation of microorganisms from the treated wastewater is performed by the membrane module. The membranes constitute a physical barrier for all suspended solids and therefore enable not only recycling of the activated sludge to the bioreactor but also production of a permeate, free of suspended matter, bacteria, and viruses.

With the membrane directed immersed into the bioreactor, submerged MBR systems are usually preferred to sidestream configuration (with the membrane situated into a pressurized external loop), especially for domestic wastewater treatment. The submerged configuration relies on coarse bubble aeration to produce in-tank recirculation and limit fouling. The energy demand of the submerged system can be up to 2 orders of magnitude lower than of the sidestream systems and submerged systems operate at a lower flux, demanding more membrane area. In submerged configurations, aeration is considered as one of the major parameter on process performances both hydraulic and biological. Aeration maintains solids in suspension, scours the membrane surface and provides oxygen to the biomass, leading to a better biodegradability and synthesis of the cell. The air-induced cross flow can efficiently remove or at least reduce the fouling layer on the membrane surface. A recent review reports the latest findings on applications of aeration in submerged membrane configuration and described the enhancement of performances offered by gas bubbling. As an optimal air flow-rate has been identified behind which further increases in aeration have no effect on fouling removal, the choice of aeration rate is a key parameter in MBR design.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Colorful Fluid Dynamics"][/caption]

CFD stands for Computational Fluid Dynamics, a way to solve equations that describe fluid flow through iterative schemes that are amenable to be programmed and solved using computers. Of course, there are reservations about this, as in general, with anything involving computers. Simply put, it is GIGO - garbage in garbage out. Use CFD wrongly, you end up with wrong results. To highlight this perhaps, in a recent Forbes article, titled Don't Be Fooled By Pretty Pictures , Kenneth G. Brill is executive director of the Uptime Institute in Santa Fe, N.M. gives an example

In one example, a client hired a consultant to model computer-room cooling, but the consultant had never been in the room and did not compare is temperature predictions with actual conditions. Actual temperatures were dramatically higher than the model predicted because only one out of five cooling units was working properly. So why did this client spend $200,000 on modeling without having first proved the cooling equipment was working and capable of delivering capacity as assumed by the software?

In most cases, a cooling tuneup will dramatically reduce or totally eliminate hot spots. CFD modeling is appropriate if problems still remain after completion of the computer-room cooling tuneup. The modeler, as part of the contract, should demonstrate the model reliably predicts existing temperature conditions. Pictures are great to look at, but what's important is whether they're accurate.

This is an usual crib by people who either cannot or too lazy (or powerful) enough not to try to understand CFD.

In the above example, that the modeler should demonstrate the CFD results to match reality is a requirement the client needs to explicity state. That means the client needs to give the CFD modeler all the information/input/boundary and intial conditions. What if the client himself has not provided the correct input data for the simulations?

As can be noticed, the CFD results in the above example, by itself, is NOT wrong. Just the input given to CFD is bad. The predictions by CFD with wrong input (that all the cooling units were working properly) would obviously give wrong results (of lower temperature).

If you don't like pretty pictures, turn off the color schemes in CFD. IT can generate all pictures in shades of grey. Go figure that, old bloke.

CFD is not always wrong. Some of the (non)users mostly are.

Worried about today's stock market activity? Retreat with me into the security of the bright future that awaits.

Microsoft's Craig Mundie (pater familias of the Institute for Advanced Technology in Governments), is on a college tour across the nation. The trip is something of a reprise of jaunts Bill Gates famously made over the years, when he would string together visits to campuses partly to evangelize, partly to recruit, and mostly to get new ideas from bright young (and contrarian) minds. The Seattle paper today labels these tours as filling the role of Microsoft's "chief inspiration officer" ("Mundie gives campuses peek at tech's future").

What's he telling this generation of future technologists, at Princeton, NYU, University of Michigan, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego? Here's a telling quote from Craig in a much longer interview just posted with Knowledge@Wharton:

Many of the failings -- not just of our software but of all large software -- is that the security problems, the lack of reliability, the difficulty in maintenance, the difficulty in testing, all of these things are symptomatic of software still being too much of an art form and too little of an engineering discipline. I believe that over the next 10 to 20 years, you're going to see a dramatic shift in the way people write software...

Software will be built through the composition at every scale of a lot of distributed, asynchronous services. The question is: How can you specify, compose and operate those services?"

What will such software enable - since "a lot" = billions of distributed, asynchronous services? The future may look a lot like what Kevin Kelly laid out in a mind-tripping TED talk at the dawn of 2008 ("Predicting the Next 5000 Days of the Web"). But Kevin's conclusions were predicted in a pathbreaking 1997 article for Microsoft Research by Gordon Bell and Jim Gray, "The Revolution Yet to Happen." And their writing appropriately cited Vannevar Bush's archetypal 1945 Atlantic Monthly article "As We May Think" for its vision of the globally networked uber-library, Memex.

And for a peek into how we're beginning that "changed way of software," I've written before that we're using Robotics as an exemplar, a testbed, and it is proving to be a remarkable environment in which to test the power of marrying "Decentralized Software Services" (DSS) with a "Concurrency and Coordination Runtime" (CCR) framework. It's really powerful, check out this detailed technical report - lots of cool pictures, too :-)
