What this does is makes commenting more worth it. You comment and they provide DoFollow links to commentators. Please do not interpret it as you comment and I follow in layman’s terms. Obviously you do understand that as back linking increases your chances at page rank. Do remember that these back links need to be free because paid back links will be penalised where it matters most, Google page rank.

Google just did a new index and updated its pagerank for sites. I found it very interesting to see the different sites I work with change.

Interestingly, this site. . . a site I hardly do anything with, had the biggest jump. It went from a pr of nothing to a 3. Now that would be expected if I had actually done something on this site to warrant that, but I rarely wrote anything and got no links back to the site and pages. More interestingly, some pages on this site even have a pr of 3?!?!!?! OK, I get the front page. . . maybe, but a little page about EFT getting a 3 with no inbound links other than wordpress tags?!?!!?

Compare that to another blog I have on wordpress.com. . . I posted regularly on this other site, got lots of backlinks, linked only to high quality sites, and what did it get? Nothing! It didn't get any page rank whatsoever?!?!?! Other sites changed more "normally" - staying the same or going up one or two pr. Those all made sense but two wordpress.com sites made no sense.

So. . . I looked at the site structure and whatnot. . .

This site uses a template that minimizes the number of links on posts. In other words, you only get the categories and blogroll on the front page and categories. I didn't have a tag cloud and I used tags normally. The other site had a tag cloud which generated a lot of pages. It didn't use excerpts like this site, and the sidebar links are on all pages and posts.

What can we lear from this? Well, my guess is that google really like you to minimize the "site wide links" and have the least amount of links outbound as possible. It seems that text links are ok, but navbar links can kill you. Secondly, they don't like to see a site get too many inbound links . . . especially with site wide links form other sites. That's a good reason for everyone to take down these stupid top commentors and recent comments from the sidebar. They hurt you and they people they are linking to! Sooner or later those links with go away anyways. . . so why bother? Just give dofollow text links in your comments and skip all the sidebar junk, it isn't helping anyone.

I blog a lot. I comment a lot too. I enjoy the whole process.

But that process is being abused and it's not the way you might think...

I don't know about Wordpress dot com, but I suspect it's the same as Wordpress dot org. Comments are set as 'nofollow' by default. This means that, although when you comment on a blog you can put a link to your own blog in your signature, the link, in terms of 'Google Juice', will not be followed back to your blog.

The default is set this way because the old way, which allowed a link back which was 'followed', produced loads of spam comments. People were posting comments (often automatically) simply to get a link back to their own blog and thus give themselves a 'backlink'.

Hence 'nofollow' commenting.

But, with anti-spam measures, like akismet, many people began to ask whether 'nofollow' was necessary. If akismet caught most of the spammers (automatic or otherwise), then surely those who commented on their blogs deserved a bit of 'link luv'?

So plugins were produced which could change the 'nofollow' default to 'dofollow' and those who installed it advertised the fact that their blogs were worth commenting on, because when you did, you would get a little bit of 'Google Juice' back.

Sounds good right? An ideal way to get more comments on your blog. A good way to encourage more visitors.

However, the majority of Wordpress bloggers still stick with 'nofollow'. Some prefer to do this because not all spam gets akismeted and they have to moderate it along with the rest of the comments. And on a busy blog, this can be time consuming.

Others argued that 'dofollow' would dilute the 'link juice' they were giving out and, in any case, they wanted helpful comments on their blogs, not people commenting just for the sake of getting a backlink, however good the comment was.

So has followed a bit of a tussle, between those advocating 'dofollow' and those refusing to budge from the default.

Many advocates of 'dofollow' are quite vociferous in their 'opinions' that those who comment to 'dofollow' blogs should 'give it back' by making their own blogs 'dofollow' as well.

But is this fair?

To me, this seems like 'dofollow' fascism: "We have changed the rules to suit us, and now you have to follow them. We do not care about your feelings on the subject. This is the way it's going to be."

But some of us want to comment on a blog for the sake of commenting. We do not give a toss whether the blog is 'dofollow' or not. We just want to make a contribution to the blog post.

After all, isn't that what blogging is supposed to be about?

And why should we have to change our blogs, with extra load-heavy plugins, in order to take part in the blogging experience?

Yes, I know it's all about backlinks and that Google likes backlinks, yaada, yaada...

But you know what? I don't give a monkey's.

All I know is that I am finding it more and more difficult to feel comfortable commenting on 'dofollow' blogs, without feeling that my comments (as a blog owner who still has 'nofollow' set) are unwanted.

So much for the blogosphere's 'community spirit.

Maybe I'll just sit this one out...

Dofollow your way to Viral Success

Hello sneezers and infecters. The Viral Trolls post is quite a success - I’ve now got bragging

Hello sneezers and infecters. The Viral Trolls post is quite a success - I've now got bragging rights to the top one spot for the keywords "Viral Trolls." Apparently, people throw around the troll word all the time, but have not really talked about it much in a single post. Yay, I got the top one spot. It's not the most profitable keywords in the world, but it does allow me to brag about it in this itty bitty blog.

What I've chosen to write about today is to give some "DoFollow" help to viral blog commentors out there. The "revolution", or "phenomenon" how over you want to call it has been going on for a year or more. So we can move on to why turning your blog into a "dofollow" is utterly profitable and why you should link from "dofollow" sites - let's see what Wikipedia says about "nofollow" and what it is exactly:

"nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target's ranking in the search engine's index. It is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of search engine spam, thereby improving the quality of search engine results and preventing spamdexing from occurring in the first place. The concept for the specification of the attribute value nofollow was designed by Google’s head of webspam team Matt Cutts and Jason Shellen from Blogger.com in 2005."

"Nofollow" was initiated to fight spam, yet it has affected decent backlinkers and blog commentors as well. Luckily for us we have a choice, as there are more "dofollow" sites emerging, where you can actually be rewarded for your linking efforts.

If you have SEO for FIREFOX you'll notice that some links are actually highlighted in red -- these are "no follow" links -- meaning the search engine spiders crawl over them like they don't exist. Blog comments on "nofollow" blogs usually have a purely viral effect. It could still drive traffic to your site though -- in a viral way -- somebody clicks on your link and finds your site.

Another way to find out if the link is no follow is to press control + U while you're at the page in question and search for the words "no follow" on your page's source page. (does that make sense?) It's gonna look like a little something like this:

I actually did some research as to how to make my own blog a "dofollow" blog. I'd love to get a barrage of comments. (Come on, who doesn't like attention? Even if it is virtual.) It entails getting a plug-in.. I currently cannot use this plugin as of the moment, having a free blog on wordpress.com -- but this will be coming soon once I pay for outside hosting -- a promise to myself and my readers. Here are some sites that offer wordpress.org hosting. Hosting your blog on another server has a lot of benefits -- one among them is being able to join the Do follow revolution. Another is being able to install plug-ins, and some widgets that actually only work on wordpress.org (one of them is Blogrush - the traffic driving widget).

Some hosts:
DreamHost
MediaTemple
Blue Host

For a complete list of hosting services check out wordpress hosting .

Well the obvious question now is, apart from making my blog a do follow blog, how do I find dofollow blogs, forums and etcetera to link from? Where is dofollow web 2.0? A little skittle around the web for dofollow resources actually proved to be very productive. I actually posted a question on digitalpoint forums and asked how to get high PR links without spending a lot? Apparently, I end up answering my own question.

Do follow search engines. Type your keyword and find only dofollow results.

The best one garnering from the feedback of many is Backlinkspot
Some others are
Commenthunt
Ezbusinessneeds

One personal favorite is W3ec . The interface is very revolutionary. (If you check it out you'll see what I mean.)

Here are some more great links:

21 Dofollow Social Bookmarking Sites. Bookmark your way to the Pagerank you've always dreamed of!
Sites that really do follow. Dofollow directory.
List of forums that allow "do follow" signature links Sign your way to link juice.

Backlinking has never been so rewarding, and having too many comments never so accepted. If they say you have something to say about everything, maybe you should be saying what you say in do follow blogs.

Hope this helps you. Spread the virus.

I have always wanted to include "Top Commentators" feature on my blog since the day I came to know about the plugin, but was feeling handicapped as my blog is hosted on wordpress.com and neither this feature is available as default at wordpress.com nor they allow custom plugins to be installed. So that was the end of my desire.

But being handicapped is not a good reason for not doing something that is desired. Where there is will, there is a way. And today I finally decided that I would have "Top Commentators" on my blog, even if it requires me to do it manually. Following this decision I browsed through all 27 comment pages copying 500+ comments to MS-Excel, removing own comments, pingbacks and unapproved comments to come up with 250+ comments by various readers and visitors out of which Top Seven are displayed on the sidebar.

So "Top Commentators" is here on this blog with the only difference that you may not see it updated immediately on commenting, but I intend to update it frequently and all comments since inception of this blog are counted. I don't intend to reset the counter to zero until 2009 or wordpress.com adding "Top Commentators" feature, whatever comes earlier.

Almost all blog platforms by default are set up so that a “dead end” piece of code is inserted wherever there is a link in a comment, so that search engines will not “count” the link. This was originally designed to help stop comment spam, but it doesn’t work.

What it does do, is remove some of the incentive for your readers to contribute to your site by commenting to your posts. And this is exactly opposite to what you want: make commenting as attractive as possible.

What can you do about it? Turn off “nofollow” (look here to learn more about this).

Turning off the “nofollow” on blog comments has become a sort of “movement”. OgenDicht wants to show its commenters that they are appreciated and has turned off 'nofollow'.

Following the lead of a few of my favourite reads, I've decided to disable the nofollow attribute for commenting that's built into my Blogger™ template. So to encourage commenting and discussion if you leave your link in the comments, you will be justly rewarded.

Now of course I manually moderate the comments - and oh boy, it's such an onerous job with the hundreds of comments I get on each post ;) - and any spam comments that show up will of course be swiftly dealt with. I've even put up an ominous commenting policy over on the right, but that's more just to encourage people to participate rather than lay down the proverbial law.

If you've got a Blogger™ blog and you're want to spread the Google juice to your commenters then check out this post.
