For lunch, I decided to order a sandwich from a local deli. A woman answered the phone on the other end and promptly informed me that they had run out of white bread. Which was unfortunate due to the integral role that two slices of bread play in making a respectable sandwich.

It was noon. Lunch time. And they were out of white bread.

I wanted to order the pastrami, but I was afraid as to where they were going to put it. Clearly it wasn't going between two slices of white bread.

This was as ridiculous as pulling up to a Dairy Queen drivethru when the vanilla ice cream machine isn't working and being forced to order an ice cream cake, only easy on the ice cream.

ANGELES CITY, Philippines A few weeks ago I panned Bretto's Delicatessen for slipping in terms of quality. Their restaurant rates a review, however. The restaurant sits directly adjacent to the deli itself, co-located on mid-Perimeter Road in Angeles City.

The food makes good use of the deli's forte: subs, burgers, and meat dishes. You can order what Bretto's calls "submarinos" like turkey (P200), club sandwich (P235), and ham and cheese (P235). You can also opt for what Bretto's calls roasts on buns, like the roast beef for P240 or Roast lamb for P275. The roasts come with fries and a small salad. Really small salad, actually.

They offer the so-called biggest burger in town, and I think they are probably right about that. A half pound "Fatburger" with pickled relish, chopped onions, and lettuce" runs P315 and if you've got a massive appetite, you can try the 1 lb version for P420. They also serve a variety of other burgers, some with unlikely ingredients. They top the P315 Aussie burger with and egg and beetroot, making it overly sloppy, while the Bretto's special comes topped with cream cheese, olives, portabella mushrooms, tomato, and onion salsa, making it even sloppier to eat. I couldn't think of an odder burger combo if I tried.

Then there are some simple chicken dishes, like the P240 fried chicken with fries, or the P330 chicken cordon bleu. Other hot dishes include the bland baked pork chop for P225 or overly sweet pork barbeque for P235.

The food mostly reminds makes me think that whoever planned the menu watches FoodTV too much. The combinations on the burgers, in particular, just don't work. Onion salsa and cream cheese? They just don't particularly complement each other. What you end up getting is creamy goop.

The prices are high, but the portions are fairly large, with a few exceptions. They have a few sausage selections, like a P295 pork sausage with mashed potatoes and peas that are just plain overpriced for what you get and thoroughly uninspired in their preparation. Take sausage. Fry. Add mashed potatoes--from a box. Serve. Not appetizing for $7 bucks, is it?

As I mentioned the restaurant lies directly adjacent to the deli and in fact you enter it through the same door. It's a small cafe with perhaps 10 tables. Service is unmotivated. You'll need to flag down a waitress for whatever your needs may be. Luckily it's a small place, so that's not difficult. It's a nice environment to enjoy a meal.

While the Bretto's restaurant appears to be popular, it's not really worth the trip unless you happen to be shopping there.

CUISINE: Deli/Australian | COST: *** | RATING: *1/2

With Toasties literally in my NYU dorm building this entire summer, there was absolutely no way to avoid it. Not that I would want to, considering its fast and easy appeal. And the constant stream of customers, which is always a good sign.

Serving up sandwiches, soups, salads, bagels, coffee, drinks, grilled items and more, Toasties is a one-stop deliiiight deli. It's a make-your-own haven, with endless fillers for salads and sandwiches. They'll toast anything, grill anything, top anything with anything! A New Yorker's dream. It's fast-paced and cheap, too.
written: 09/28/2007
I took a joyride in RVC today. Near the end of North Park Avenue I found what I was looking for. North Park Deli advertises steak with tostones and chicken wings with fries on the window.
I walk in. Not too much in there. Two Latinos talking, watching gringo as he strolls in.
I expected to find the display of cooked food which I am used to; 6 or 7 dishes laid out, I usually just use my finger to communicate. Not this time.

"Steak? with tostone? wheres all the food?"
"I can make it...."
"ahhh, hmmm nahh, do you have anything ready?"
"pork. i have pork"
"chich? chicharones?? my favorite!"
"with rice and beans? come on"
He leads me to the back room. The kitchen is literally a walk in closet with one door to the store and one door to the backyard. There's a stove with 3 pots inside and 1 pan on top. One pot with white rice, one with beans, and one with chich. My god, the bare-boneness of it all! Charming as a daisy. He pulls up the aluminum foil and gives me a piece (reminiscent of katz's), I approve and he packs it in.

7 dollars for lunch and a merengue refresco.

Food was fried with a ton of taste in it. There's been better, but I would be greedy to ask for it. As far as experience, stepping into someone's kitchen to browse your choices and shoot the breeze gives you a closeness that can't be beat. Unfortunately it's probably against the law. What can I say? I like contraband.

I work in a deli.
I have a uniform. It declares that I must wear black or tan pants with a white collared shirt. I like this.. that means I only needed to buy shirts when I got my job. And because they were white I need to wear a black tanktop under them. Because white bras didn't make sense to own before. I never wore white and they'd show through my really thin old black (grey) shirts. So I just assumed wear a black tanktop underneath.

It is warm out.
I walk to work. It's not a bad walk. it's shaded for a good portion of it. it's flat land mostly. But it IS summer. therefore wearing two shirts is a liiittle warm. So I tend to walk in my tanktop and my work pants.

This is how it looks.

I think it's decent. I'm covered. It's modest... it's something I wear for wooork. I'm not prancing about in a little black cocktail dress and heels or applebottom jeans.

I walk on a main road.
To get there I have to go past the rotary in my town. It's a pretty busy road. There are alot of cars. there's a highway offramp there and all. I walk on the sidewalk and lots of cars pass me.. sometimes people I know are driving by and they offer me a ride. That's always nice.

Some fools in their cars think it is FUNNY.
To drive past me and scream out their windows. or to honk at me and make lewd hand gestures.
It doesn't happen everyday.. its happening less now that people are headed back to schools. so I'm going to assume it was mostly college kids or something. But why? WHYYY? do you need to drive past someone and screeeam out your window. I can't understand what you're saying, you're driving too fast.

And you scare the bejeebus out of me when you honk at me. I can hear that through my headphones. and its alarming to suddenly hear HONKHONK!! in the middle of something that should be my soothing music. It's even scarey when I hear it through my loud growly music.

~

~

~

~

This leaves me wondering. Why me? What did I do to you? I'm not dressed to be catcalled. I'm not shaking my butt down the road. I'm just attempting to not dehydrate.. again XD

If you're like me, you find that when you step outside for lunch from your office, you find you go to the same spots. So thanks to this blog, I've been going to new places all the time. The Brown Bag is another one of those new spots.

Food:I ordered the Love at 1st Bite sandwich. There is some mayo on this tuna sandwich, but not a lot so it worked for me (and we all know I hate mayo!). There's a perfect combination of onion to tuna to lettuce. The multi-grain bread is fresh, but it might be even better if they toasted it. My only complaint is that I would have liked to see more tomato. I bet next time, if I ask, they'll put more on. Sweet.

Service:It's merged with the atmosphere information, but basically, you never have to talk to anyone. You can also customize your sandwich and unless you have horrible writing, you'll get exactly what you asked for without worrying the person behind the counter misunderstood. I like the fact you can order it online too.

Atmosphere:Inside it's cute with three different lines -- one for salads, noodles, and sandwiches. They also have a bunch of pre-made items in the front cooler. When you walk in, determine which you're going to order. Then they have the laminated order cards and you circle which item you want. There are 10-15 tables inside in the front of the restaurant.

Attire: Casual

Price: $

Overall:It's a good sandwich place and I was shocked that I liked their tuna salad sandwich. The shock comes because I hate mayo and normally don't order tuna salad out because of the mayo. I know you're going to laugh, but I didn't realize it was tuna salad -- I thought it was just going to be albacore tuna. I've never tried their pasta (has anyone else?), but would go back.

L'Epicerie
1325 1 Street SE
Calgary, AB
(403) 514-0555

A L'Epicerie is a term used throughout France to designate a grocery or general store. Originally a spice counter, these stores now sell a variety of items, usually including charcuterie, dry goods, produce, meats and cheeses.

In Calgary, L'Epicerie is the name of a french deli opened up by Dominique Moussu, executive chef of Teatro. Conveniently located in the same complex as Manuel Latrouwe, and Bernard Callebaut just south of downtown, they have joined forces to create a premium food "destination". All three businesses carry items positioned as high end, and this can only help them generate additional sales. At L'Epicerie, this includes things like their own terrines, gravlox, french cheeses (Epoisse!), Magret Duck breasts, Haricots Tarbais and other hard to find French items. A lot of this stuff is imported directly from France, and very difficult to otherwise find.

My experiences there have been generally very positive. Their service has been phenomenal, if sometimes just a touch slow. But I really don't mind - this isn't the express lane at your local supermarket, this is an Epicerie! :) Like many new places however, they have had some difficulty with pricing. While I am pleased to note that prices have stabilized at a something a bit more reasonable (moving in the right direction anyway), the prices have been dropped a few times on several items I consistently purchase. While the prices are not for the faint of heart, they do provide access to some otherwise difficult to find ingredients.

In terms of take out/ready to eat, they primarily serve sandwiches. I first paid $18 for a full sandwich. New prices have changed to $7 and $14 for a half or full sandwich respectively. These sandwiches are made on fresh bread, with all high quality ingredients. I had the terrine of foie gras, which included arugula, moutard, and great bread. While it might not be worth $18, the quality of the terrine made for a very decadent, and enjoyable experience. And now it costs $14, so even better!

My favorite thing that they carry are fresh-made potato chips. The first time i went, i ordered these because they were the least expensive thing i could buy, and gracefully leave with without looking sheepish. I wasn't quite prepared for the price. They were $6 for a small bag if you're curious. However, i loved them. Crisp, rich potato flavour with some great salt, these are sublime chips. Then their price dropped, making it only somewhat ridiculous in price ($4.50). Then they changed the potato they used, and they actually taste better. As a treat, I will occassionaly pick up a bag, but these are steep prices for day-to-day living. My waistline is quite relieved by this fact, as at $2-$3 for a small bag, I'd be there every day. I love my potato chips.

L'Epicerie is an interesting idea for Calgary, but I worry about its potential longevity. If a downturn in the economy occurs, I have a difficult time imaging people continuing to spend loads of money on many pricey french items they've had no experience cooking with, or utilizing. Some element of education maybe be necessary to explain why some of these ingredients are worth the cost. Very friendly and nice, i wish nothing but the best for them. The fact they continue to refine their price shows they care about their succeeding, and do listen to feedback. However, they might have been better off aiming for something a bit more affordable to the general masses. The bottom line though, if you're in the market for some french rarities or high quality ingredients, wanting to try bistro or brasserie type food at home, L'Epicerie is the store for you.
