Right now the 7-year-old firm has grown to 11 employees and another 10-15 contractors and partners. It expects its revenue to grow 175-200 percent this year and another 300-400 percent next year. That will mean at least a doubling of the current staff.

And all of those people will be at its home base just north of Pontiac.

"We don't do any development outside of Orion Township," Holth says. "We don't outsource anything. Anything you see was made in north Oakland County. Period. We are very proud of that."

Un screencast es la técnica por la que se genera un videotutorial en el que se ve el ordenador del profesor, su escritorio o área de trabajo de su monitor, y cómo va realizando las diferentes acciones, explicadas con su voz en off.

Los screencast son idóneos para solucionar dudas de forma remota o para enseñar a utilizar cualquier tipo de software. En lugar de explicar cómo se hace algo por mail o teléfono, grabas un vídeo en dónde realizas tú la acción y lo remites al destinatario. Muy sencillo.

Ahora la gran duda: ¿qué programa debemos utilizar para hacer esto, que sea sencillo a la vez que potente?

Yo lo tengo muy claro. Si eres usuario de Mac, Screenflow, si eres usuario de PC Camtasia Studio.

A mi me gusta más, cómo no, Screenflow, pero lo dos son muy sencillos a la vez que intuitivos. No son gratis, pero el precio no es alto para todo lo que se puede conseguir con ellos, sin tener en cuenta el tiempo que nos ahorramos cuando debemos explicar cómo se hace cualquier tipo de actividad en un ordenador.

Espero opiniones sobre estos programas y recomendaciones de algunos otros que se consideren mejores.

Viele Lehrende verwenden in ihren Vorlesungen bereits elektronische Folien (PowerPoint, PDF etc.) und präsentieren diese durch Laptop und Beamer. Was aber viele nicht wissen: der Vortrag kann leicht und ohne großen technischen Aufwand elektronisch aufgenommen werden, so dass er den Studierenden später als eLecture-Video (Podcasts, Vodcast etc.) online zur Verfügung gestellt werden kann. Durch Werkzeuge wie Camtasia werden diese Vorlesungs-Aufzeichnung spielend einfach: es genügt, ein Mikrofon an den Laptop anzuschließen und die Aufnahme zu starten. Der Lehrende kann sich dabei voll und ganz auf seinen Vortrag konzentrieren.

In dem Workshop werden die Grundkenntnisse der Vorlesungs-Aufzeichnung mit Hilfe von Camtasia vermittelt. RWTH-Lehrende, die an dem Workshop teilnehmen möchten, können sich bis Mittwoch formlos durch eine E-Mail anmelden [mehr Infos].

We had a training open to all library staff earlier this week on Captivate. Here is what we have determined:

• Captivate projects are easier to edit: you can copy and paste slides, delete and add sections, & extend time frames in a much easier manner than in Camtasia. In Camtasia you can screen draw and select mouse options before and during the recording phase, but cannot change this in editing mode. You have to start over. Captivate lets you play with these options afterward. So if you mess up during recording, you don't have to start all over again.
• Captivate saves you time: this is a smart software, and can actually add captions for you based on what you're doing on the screen (like "click X," "you are now on X page"). These are easy to alter or delete if you like, but if you want them this will save you a lot of time.
• Captivate quizzes are pretty: well, prettier than Camtasia's. And you can actually preview them without publishing the project.
• Captivate allows interactivity: this is a big one, and one I mentioned in my previous post. You can select an area on the screen and the user has to click it to continue, or take them somewhere. Allows a lot more customization than Camtasia's "hot spots." There's also a new feature in Captivate 3 called "branching," where you can make your product even more dynamic as users go to different places and discover different things.

This doesn't mean to say I'm writing Camtasia off completely. I do like it's easy ability to record audio with powerpoints, and I like it's preview screen which Captivate is lacking (have to select "preview" to see what the project looks like in motion and any changes you've made). That said, an intern at the library this summer spent 2 months messing with Camtasia trying to make a tutorial on searching for newspapers using Access World News. She was very frustrated, particularly with the screen drawing and audio quality. That's enough to convince me in the Captivate vs. Camtasia debate: Captivate Wins.

[A] The program i used was an old run as date and after the month ended the trial ended. I found this out after a month of having the video online. Sorry but to fix this you need to either install the trial on another pc or if your are rearly desperate format your hard drive and reinstall your windows os. Now let us look at same problem solved by the big software companies, I am just taking 2 examples.

1. Microsoft Windows VS Linux
2. Camtasia snagit VS Firefox addons Screen Grab VS WINK (Free)

Microsoft Windows - People continue to make fun of the "Blue screen of Death" in Windows, but funny bone people continue to run their machines with the same Microsoft Windows OS at least the majority of them.

When the threat came from Linux for Windows, I remember every media said that it was death of Windows and even now people say that web will be the new OS, that is still speculative.

What did Microsoft Windows do?
If I am not wrong, they came with lot of advertisements to educate users about the benefits of using Windows. They came with Windows XP SP1, SP2 & SP3 and fixed as much as they could. They executed it well.

I believe the marketing spend on Microsoft XP could have been almost or significantly nil when XP sales was at its peak. Word of mouth still holds good in business. Techies still continue to say XP is stable compared to Vista and there is no major innovation in Vista, that people have upgrade to Vista.

To say, we are still dependent on Microsoft for most of our office productivity. Aren't we?

The second story is the most significant one. Their product is easy to create and it requires less effort and they still continue to be leaders in their USP. I am taking about TechSmith the makers of Camtasia Snagit.

They did face the similar issue of free software from the open source community.

The popularity of Firefox add ons created a market slow down for Camtasia Snagit and on top of that was the Freeware software called WINK, it did almost the same functionality of Snagit and it was free and forums was available for support.

How did TechSmith Camtasia Snagit fight?
Camtasia Snagit 7.2.5 the earlier commercial version of the software was given free.

Do you want to know why they made it free?
The story goes like this in the Indian shop vendors or Medical Shops, If you ask for a medicine and if it is currently out of stock, they will send one of their members to collect the same medicine from the medical store just opposite their store or even few streets away to procure the same and give it to their customers. It is that the customer gets a feeling that any medicine he needs can be obtained. And that he will come back to the same medical store if he needed one.

TechSmith didn't want end users to try free software instead allowed users to try the previous commercial version for free.

I use Camtasia Snagit free edition as I experience the reliable, proven and easy to use screen capturing/recording software. BTW, I have already tried the software and its features, and even know each and every interface. It is just that it is easy to use, Comfortable. The only feeling being left out, that I am unable to use the advanced features, which are available in the current commercial version.

For the extra mileage they have contributed few projects called Jing Project and ScreenCast
That takes care of community etc etc

Final Notes: Winning over Free is difficult, but not impossible. If you believe in Free, you can't win over Free. Undo the learning and fight against Free. If you wish to.

I love Camtasia more and more the more I work with it and found Audacity pretty easy to figure out for basic things. We went with YouTube for a host, as all of the videos were under 10 minutes long, and we wanted them in a mainstream host with linking and embedding options. Kalite ayarları

Varsayıyorum 35 çekirdekli bir makinem, 1 tetrazilyon mb'lık belleğim var ve ben kayıt yaparken aynı anda kodlamayı da yapmak istiyorum.Atlı kovalıyor ya peşimden, acele etmeliyim.Bunun için

recordmydesktop -width 1280 -height 720 -x 80 -y 90 --on-the-fly-encoding

kodunu kullanıyorum.Yorgan uzunluğu belli, canım ülkemin canım insanları, n'olur bu gibi parametreleri kulakardı ediverin. :)

Zevzeklik etmeden, hemen görüntü kalitemle ilgili olan kısma geçiyorum.
Recordmydesktop'ın, eğer bu ayarı değiştirmezseniz, akıllara zarar kalitede yaptığı bir kayıt kalitesi var.Bu, v_quality parametresiyle hallediliyor ve varsayılan değeri 63, yani son kalite.Hiç bit hızıyla falan uğraşmadan direkt olarak bunu artırıp-azaltabilir ve görüntü kayıt kalitesini tek celsede değiştirebiliriz.Şöyle ki:

Bu kod ile recordmydesktop'ın 1'den 63'e kadar verdiği değerlerin arasında olan 35. kademe kaliteyi kullanarak kayıt yapıyorum.Bilmem bahsetmelimiyim, ne kadar düşük, o kadar bulanık. ;)

Şimdi de işi biraz daha detaylandıralım ve görüntünün bit hızını (video bitrate) kendimiz belirleyelim.Recordmydesktop bu değeri varsayılan olarak 45.000 bit yani yaklaşık olarak 5 Mbps (megabit per second - saniyedeki bit sayısı) verir.45.000 ile 2.000.000 arası değer alabilir.

recordmydesktop -width 1280 -height 720 -x 80 -y 90 -v_bitrate 51.200

Bu kod ile 51.200 yani (51.200/8=6.400 Kbps) ~6.400 kbit'lik bir görüntü bit hızı belirledim.

Bir diğer kalite ayarıysa ses ile ilgili.Kolay yoldan kaydın ses tarafının kalitesini belirlememize yarar.-1 ile 10 arası değer alır.(-1 mi?) Kullanımı şöyledir:

6. seviye ses kalitesiyle, rahatlıkla konuştuklarınız ya da dinlettiğiniz şeyler anlaşılabilir.Artırabilir ya da düşürebilirsiniz elbette.

Eveeet, işin kodlama kısmı da bittiğine göre temel ayarlara, son ayarlara girebiliriz.Bu kısımda dosyayı nereye kaydedeceğiz, adı ne olsun, bekleme, pencere yöneticisi vs. gibi ayarlaya değineceğiz.

Temel ayarları

İsterseniz "Varsayalım..." gibi başlamak yerine, bu sefer direkt olarak parametrelerin anlamlarını yazayım.

Bu komuta verdiğim -rescue parametresiyle, yaptığım işleme ait bilgileri, oluşursa hataları bir dosyaya yazıyorum.

Bu komuta verdiğim --no-wm-check parametresiyle, Recordmydesktop'ın pencere yöneticisi denemesi yapmamasını sağlıyorum.Bu ne işime yarar? Diyelim ki kaydın bir yerinde Kwin yerine Compiz pencere yöneticini kullanacak oldum.Bu durumda Recordmydesktop'ın kaydı Kwin ortamında yapmaya devam etmesini engellemek için bu parametreyi veririm ve rahatlıkla kayda devam ederim.Tabi compiz ya da Xfce gibi başka bir pencere yöneticisi açıkken de bunu kullanabilir ya da kullanmayabilirsiniz.Tercih sizin.

recordmydesktop -width 1280 -height 720 -pause-shortcut Control+mod4+u

Bu parametreyle, kaydı duraklatmak için gerekli olan kısayol tuşunu kendim belirlemiş oldum.Control CTRL tuşunu, mod4 Super, yani pencere tuşunu ifade ediyor.Bu arada Mod1 de sol Alt tuşunu ifade eder.Bunu yönetim panelinizden ayarlayabilirsiniz.Mesela bunu Pardus Linux'ta, Tasma'dan ayarlayabiliriz:

gibi bir parametreyle belirleyebilirsiniz.Dediğim gibi mod1, varsayılan olarak sol Alt tuşunu ifade eder.

Bu parametre, görüntü verisine ek olarak ufak bir sıkıştırma yapmaya yarar.

Bu -workdir parametresiyle yaptığım kaydın hangi klasöre yazılmasını istiyorum, bunu belirliyorum.

recordmydesktop -width 1280 -height 720 -delay 30

Bu -delay parametresi de saniye cinsinden kaydın ne kadar süre sonra başlayacağını ayarlamamıza yarar.

recordmydesktop -width 1280 -height 720 --overwrite

--overwrite parametresi de -o dosyaadi.ogv olarak belirlediğimiz dosya eğer çalıştığımız klasörde varsa, hiç ismini otomatik olarak değiştirmeden üzerine yazmamıza yarar.

recordmydesktop -width 1280 -height 720 -o kayit.ogv

-o parametresi de yaptığımzı kaydın hangi dosya ismiyle kaydedileceğini belirler.

The students have already selected one of 5 broad topics we give them - education, food, human rights, music, or sports. For the assignment and discussion posting, they have to come up with 2-3 research questions that are appropriate for writing a hypothetical 8-12 page research paper.

Here are the techniques we're teaching them:

1) Brainstorming. We have them complete a worksheet where they can talk about what they already know about a topic, what interests them about it, and what they would like to know more about.

2) Concept Mapping. I found this really cool YouTube video demonstrating how to do this:

3) Reviewing What's Out There. We have them select an article from a list on various aspects of their broad topics. All the articles are from CQ Researcher, which is great for topic overviews and includes nice bibliographies. I created a Camtasia video on how to use CQ Researcher, and directions are presented in an Articulate template.

4) Defining Certain Aspects. A tutorial created using Articulate demonstrates how they can narrow a broad topic by looking at thing such as certain time frames, geographical locations, types of people, and/or aspects (sociological, economical, legal, etc.).

Since it's only a one-credit class, and this module only lasts one week, we can't teach much more than this. Another technique that I would like to teach (possibly if we create a "Skillful Researcher 2") is how to review what's out there by looking in library catalogs and databases. This gets a little more complicated but is a great skill for students to learn.

If anyone has other methods they teach students, I'd be interested to hear what they are! I'm hoping these 4 will be a good foundation for them, but any feedback would be appreciated as well.

• Decide what host you'll be using to post your screencast to. This may dictate what resolution you'll record your screencast in. I chose blip.tv as it provided a higher resolution than YouTube, which is helpful when trying to demonstrate things in an OPAC.
• Do your screen recording first, without your voice. This allows you to focus on what you want to show, rather than what you're saying. It's relatively easy to add voice narration in Camtasia after you've recorded what you want to show, and you can pause and re-start the video motion as you record what you want to say.
• Watch your mouse movements! I didn't realize how much I'm always flipping my mouse around and scrolling up and down unnecessarily until I recorded my actions. It's very distracting to watch, so be sure to limit your mouse movement and always place your cursor by the area you're trying to highlight on the screen.
• Add "callouts" to your recording to highlight what you want people to see or follow. It's easy and adds a lot of value to your presentation.
• Be forgiving of verbal flubs. I probably recorded my voice narration 40 times before I was happy with it, but I think I could have stopped well before that if I were more forgiving of small stutters or loss of train of thought.
