I'm talking about this guy, America's favorite yellow icon...aside from the golden arches.

Since I returned to mac in 2006 and began using ichat, I honestly hadn't given this guy much thought. Time went by, I started using gchat and it was splitsville for me and America's favorite running man...until yesterday.

I was poking around on the source of all, twitter, and learned about this from Todd Defren. On the site, I was greeted by videos like the one below and this message:

"You have known him since middle school. He gave you the confidence to ask out your first significant other, and he also helped you guys break up. You two played pranks and shared great memories. But now, you two aren't speaking much and he's feeling a little lonely. Maybe you're scared and don't want to share your feelings yet, but Running Man is ready and wants to hear it. So go ahead, tell him. Let him know how you really feel.

He'll appreciate it in the morning."

One word for this campaign: Genius!

That is the only word I can use to describe a campaign that helps a group reconnect with their childhood. The only thing that anyone seems to really agree on when it comes to Gen Y is that we grew up with this great technology. For us, connecting with our childhood also involves connecting us with the technology that's unique to our time. If you have any doubts, mention Duck Hunt or Mega Man to someone my age and you'll see what I mean.

 Après le nouvel album de Portishead, le "son de Bristol" est bien de retour avec un nouveau Tricky (et en espèrant prochainement celui de Massive Attack). Après avoir fondé un label et réalisé un film, Tricky propose avec 'Knowle West Boy' la suite directe du précédent 'Vulnerable' (2003). Les guitares sont toujours présentes dans cet album punk aux racines jamaicaines, et les invités plus nombreux pour les vocals. Les morceaux sont courts, pas plus de 3 minutes. Le livret intérieur qui accompagne le cd est très sobre : feuillets jaunes, sans paroles ni détails de production, juste une photo noir et blanc au centre. Esthétique punk donc. L'essentiel est la musique. Celle de Tricky, musique anglaise métissée. On reconnaitra une reprise de Kylie Minogue, le superbe 'Slow', ici revue et corrigé à coup de six cordes électriques.

Avec 'More Stories' (import), Unkle sort pour ses fans quelques inédits et remixes (de qualité variable) issus des sessions de 'War Stories'. Et dans un mois, ce sera le tour de 'End Titles... Stories for Film'. Pas de nouvel album pour l'instant donc, mais quelques joyaux à découvrir.

L'animatrice et DJ Mary-Anne Hobbs sort une nouvelle compil' d'électro expérimentale, aux styles variés, et fidèle à l'esprit éclectique et exigeant de son émission hebdomadaire sur BBC1. On y retrouve, parmi les artistes les plus connus, Wiley (Big Dada/Ninja Tune) et Flying Lotus (Warp). Flying Lotus qui a d'ailleurs sorti le mois dernier un 'Los Angeles' très séduisant, et que certains ont comparé à DJ Shadow. Mais alors un Shadow à la sauce Warp, label anglais qui livre dans un même élan d'excellence un nouvel album de la trop rare Leila, 'Blood, Loom and Blooms'. Leila s'est attachée les collaborations vocales de sa soeur Roya Arab, de Terry Hall, de Martina Topley-Bird et du toujours fidèle Luca Santucci. 

Après l'Angleterre, jetons nos oreilles sur le continent américain. A New-York, le très productif et cultivé DJ Spooky livre un 'Sound Unbound' incroyable où il mixe art/littérature et musique/sons divers. Ainsi les voix de Jean Cocteau, Marcel Duchamp, Allen Ginsberg... rencontrent-elles Aphex Twin, DJ Spooky, les Masters Musicians of Joujouka, Sonic Youth... On apprécie particulièrement le final qui réunit William S.Burroughs et Iggy Pop pour une incantation destinée à nous faire traverser l'empire des morts, 'The Western Land'. De cette même contrée maudite, les Texans The Black Angels ont eux sorti au printemps un second album, le bien psychédélique 'Directions to see a Ghost'. A apprécier dès la nuit tombée, lorsque l'esprit se laisse aller au voyage. Mais pour redescendre sur terre, rien de tel que de pousser jusqu'à la côte ouest où Saul Williams s'est allié à Trent Reznor de Nine Inch Nails pour un 'Niggy Tardust' énergique (clin d'oeil à Bowie+hip hop+rock industriel). L'album est dans un premier temps sorti l'hiver dernier en téléchargement libre sur internet. Il est à présent édité en cd et avec 5 titres en bonus. Gros gros son, comme par exemple la reprise fabuleuse du 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' de U2.

This sounds to be a very promising book. I should admit that though I have not read the whole book (I am under extreme pressure to survive writing…-will disclose later), I sense the book has inspiring stories that would give someone some needed strength or perspective on life as we survive.

Of course for me I wish the book clearly advocated for God's help in life because human strength alone is not adequate. I strongly believe that survivorship is not complete without God and in any case our simple survivorship is simply a foretaste of what we really need to be. We need to be thriving and not surviving.

I read an excellent post from Guy Kawasaki's blog, How to change the world. The post was an interview with Jerry White, the co-founder of Survivor Corps. The interview focused on the art of survival. How do you go .. a tragedy, how do you move away from that event?

It made me think about the aura that failure can give you. When you project fails, you can surrender to the failure or move on, determined to make the next project a success. You can also choose to become a victim of that failure, a let it taint the next project with defeatism.

The Interview that Jerry White did over on Guy Kawasaki's blog on his blog really resonated with Shane over at What Leadership Demands in a post called Survival:

Of all the articles and stories I read this week this one stuck with me. I am fascinated by how much of what Jerry White has learned through is own personal tragedy translates to all of us and how we go through life.

At some point we are all confronted with a "life crisis". This crisis will ultimately test our faith… the question for each of us is where, or in who, will our faith be placed? Pay specific attention to question 3. The five steps Mr. White identifies as essential to overcoming a crisis in this world looks a lot like the stages anyone would go through as they accept Christ and begin to follow him to get beyond their past without him.

Mr. White does not speak to his own personal faith journey so I can not offer an opinion on his source for his survival process. Truth, though, has only One source regardless how we think we arrive at it. He does quote the Dalia Lama but that does not necessarily point us to where Mr. White's ultimate faith lies.

Jerry White, who lost a leg when he stepped on a landmine in Israel in 1984, is a co-founder of Survivor Corps, a group dedicated to helping the victims of violent conflicts around the world. He's been active in the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.

I will be the first to admit that I am not a book reviewer or even a professional blogger for that matter. Recently a book was brought to my attention that I felt compelled to let everyone know about. The book is titled "I Will Not Be Broken" and the author is Jerry White.

It's funny how life works sometime, the person that told me about this book thought I would be interested because I work with Relay for Life in Second Life. I Will Not Be Broken is not a book about cancer survivors specifically, it is a book about survivors period. Survivors of any crisis that enters their life and how to live with it and overcome it. There was a line in Jerry's book that although very simple, really struck me

"They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. It's not quite that simple. I believe you have to decide it will make you stronger."

I don't usually respond to press releases, but the one announcing I Will Not Be Broken: Five Steps to Overcoming a Life Crisis by Jerry White interested me enough that I checked out the intro and first chapter, which are available online.

White is the co-founder of Survivor Corps who lost his leg to a land mine. The book sounds like it has a self-help orientation, and is chock full of anecdotes. He distills it into a five-point program

o Face facts
o Choose life
o Reach out
o Get moving
o Give back

My sense is that it is compatible with Buddhist notions of compassion, though oriented more toward international humanitarianism.

Speaking now from my own knowledge, studies of human happiness have shown that it has little to do with actual circumstance, and more to do with predispositions are are either genetic or developmental. People can come back from tragedy, but a key step is to loosen attachment to the way things were but no longer are(Buddha's Four Noble Truths). Once that block is overcome, finding new life goals and working toward them can provide a path to achieving satisfaction.

Sharon of The Reservoir wrote a very complete review post entitled Book Review: About I Will Not Be Broken, a Book by Jerry White:

From a leader of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning movement to ban landmines and founder of Survivor Corps comes an astoundingly effective guide to recreating a happy and fulfilling life after catastrophe strikes—a book that Bob and Lee Woodruff call "a road map for the individual and their family to re-enter the land of the living." In I WILL NOT BE BROKEN, Jerry White reframes the question "why do bad things happen to good people?" and asks, given that bad things do happen, how do people absorb the blows and move through them?

Sharon also wrote a touching and insightful personal testimonial in a post called Dealing with loss (my experience):

In November of 2006 I lost my cousin to a fatal road accident. It was even more harrowing because I had known him for little over 10 years; both families had recently become reconciled. He was also one of my favorite cousins.

It was like most deaths of that sort, a needless one. I remember when I first heard the news, the question I kept asking was why? I needed to know why it happened. He was only 24 years old, he hadn't even begun to really live life. How could he just be snuffed out like that?

I'd just been called to bar (in fact, he was buried on the same day I was called to the bar). So I just buried it deep down inside me and didn't think about it.

Then less than a year later, I met my husband to be. In telling him about my family, I started to tell him about this cousin when I felt a deep flood of emotion threaten to drown me. I started crying and just couldn't seem to stop. I cried so hard, I wanted to die. I was still asking why?

I finally dried my tears. I still don't understand why. I became a lawyer and he wasn't there to rejoice with me. I'm getting married soon and he never even met my fiance. I still haven't deleted his email address from my inbox. Many times I think I'm over it and then I feel the grief well up again; and the tears start to trickle down unobtrusively.

But I have refused to allow the grief incapacitate me. Instead I tap into it and it makes me stronger. It gives me more compassion for others, keeps me in touch with my feelings. It reminds me of my own immortality and helps me keep my priorities straight.

In my own way, I have assimilated the 5 steps to dealing with crisis in Jerry White's book, I Will Not Be Broken and made them work for me.

I know my cousin is gone and nothing I do will bring him back; not all the grieving in the world. I can't shut down because of that (he wouldn't want me to). So I have chosen instead to live and not merely exist. I get together with my brothers and his brother every now and then to reminisce about him. It keeps him alive in our hearts and we offer strength to each other. I live my life in a way I know will make him proud but more than that, the experience has made me more compassionate to others who are also grieving.

These steps are time tested and have been proven (especially in my own life). We can't stop tragedy form happening but we can overcome tragedy. However it is a personal choice. But it is a choice that can be made if the steps in I Will Not Be Broken are diligently applied.

Sandy Carlson writes about Jerry White's book, I Will Not Be Broken: Five Steps to Overcoming a Life Crisis by Jerry White, in the post Review: I Will Not Be Broken:

The book outlines a program of five steps for coping with disaster. He draws on his experiences as well as those of famous persons such as Lance Armstrong; Diana, Princess of Wales; Christopher Reeve, the American Psychological Association, and the not so famous–his college roommate, his mom, Bosnians who survived the warn in their country, a little Cambodian girl who also lost a leg to a landmine. His drawing on the wisdom of persons from all walks of life underscores he beliefs that wisdom is a collective resource as well as an individual one and that all life is interconnected. White's book approaches the challenge of trauma positively by focusing on individual strengths rather than dwelling on what went wrong and why.

I Will Not Be Broken is an earthy, conversational, and real testament of the beauty and wonder of all life.

Burkitt wrote a post about I Will Not Be Broken by Jerry White in the the British Cancer Survivors forum:

I received an email from somebody recommending this book: I will Not be broken. I had a look at the website and I think the book is worth recommending to others, even though it was not written by somebody affected by cancer.

Carl Wilton wrote, in May 12, 2008 - Unbroken, on his blog, A Pastor's Cancer Diary, how the experience of a man who has lost his leg to a Landmine in Israel has a lot in common with someone suffering and surviving cancer. That illness and tragedy is transforming and always immensely difficult to overcome — to survive and then thrive:

I think White's conclusions can be generalized to include the experience of being diagnosed with a slowly-progressing disease like cancer. In the book, he recalls a conversation he had with Princess Diana, with whom he worked as an anti-landmine activist. Touring Bosnia and speaking with survivors, they observed that everyone seemed to have "their date." They could all state precisely on which date they had been injured or bereaved.

Many of us cancer survivors can do the same with our dates of diagnosis (mine was December 2, 2005). Before that date, we may have a suspicion something is wrong, but we still have the luxury of hoping it's nothing serious. After that date, we can never return to such naiveté. We will, forever after, be cancer survivors.

Mommy blogger, Robin, wrote a powerful post on her blog, Around the Island, Rebuilding a better world, one survivor at a time:

Until a few weeks ago, I had never heard of Jerry White, let alone known that he is a leader in the international fight against landmines. I didn't know that he has this calling because he himself lost his leg to a landmine when he entered an unmarked minefield in the north of Israel, my own country, in 1984. I didn't know about his struggle to redefine his life after his accident, to choose survival, and I didn't know that he had taken it one step further, going on to found the Nobel Peace Price-winning Landmine Survivors Network (LSN), the same organization that Princess Diana was involved with.

I didn't know that he had recently expanded LSN's mission from aiding those injured by landmines to aiding all those who are victims of the worst epidemic of all - the very preventable epidemic of war and violence. The new mission bears a new name as well - Survivor Corps - which reflects both its calling and its philosophy.

Just earlier today one of my good friends, Josh, sent me a link to a new program that he'd found. He has a history of pretty good suggestions, showing me GMail almost a  century ago and more recently introducing me to Hulu before it was a blip on the radar. Both have been great tools but Digsby by far blows both of them out of the water in usefulness.In fact, it's probably more useful than an operating system altogether.

At this point in my life I've begun to accumulate multiple email addresses, multiple social networking accounts and multiple screen names. It really is a pain to check all of them on a regular basis. However, Digsby puts ALL of them into a buddy list right on the side of your screen.

For starters, you can set your email onto your Digsby account. Itll sit in your buddy type application, task bar or both and only bother you whenever you receive an email. All you have to do is click the shortcut and you can jump straight to your inbox or to compose an email. It supports the always popular GMail and Yahoo as well as IMAP and POP accounts.

It  will also hold your social networking accounts. Facebook, Myspace and Twitter are ALL supported and can provide notifications in pop out screens and offer immediate access to your profiles.

To top it all off, Digsby supports instant messaging; and I don't just mean AIM. I've had many a conversation with friends about how Facebook Chat is great except for the fact you can only operate it from, well Facebook. That's right. You can now run Facebook chat right alongside AIM on the same buddylist in the same windows. Genius.

I'm not even used to the program yet and I am clumsily navigating through all of the features. But I'm 100% positive I will use this for a LONG time coming. It's perfect for keeping tabs on ALL of your accounts and communicating without even using a web browser. I am a HUGE fan of Digsby (portrayed by the over usage of CAPS) and recommend you download it, well, immediately.

Banners were held up reading, "Free John Graham, Indigenous Prisoner of War", "No Cash for Cash Minerals, Free John Graham" and "Uranium Kills, Stop Mining Native Land". After picketing outside the office tower, the solidarity group moved up the block to smudge and say prayers for John Graham, Leonard Peltier, the people and the land outside the United States consulate. The group also informed each other of Leonard Peltier's urgent need for a diabetes test kit.

John Graham is a warrior of the Tutchone Nation whose territory is located in the Yukon (northwestern Canada). Cash Minerals is interested in uranium exploration right next to Graham’s home community in the Yukon. The company is also already exploring for uranium in the border area between the territory of the Northern Tutchone and Gwichʼin peoples in the Yukon. Cash Minerals has had a registered office in Toronto and an operations office in Vancouver for years. There are indications they may have moved their operations office from Vancouver to Toronto. Either way, one person among their Board of Directors, Basil Botha, apparently still lives in Vancouver, while one of their advisers, Suraj Ahuja, now lives in North Vancouver (according to Cash Minerals website).

John Graham fought against uranium mining on Native land in Saskatchewan and British Columbia in the 1980s. In the 70s, Graham helped with security for the American Indian Movement (AIM) at the Pine Ridge reservation on the Lakota people’s territory in South Dakota.

Now Graham is charged by the FBI with killing his friend, comrade and fellow AIM warrior, Anna Mae Pictou Aquash of the Mi’kmaq people. When Aquash’s body was found at Pine Ridge in 1976 the FBI tried to cover-up her true identity and her cause of death, burying her as a Jane Doe and claiming she died of exposure. Her family and friends demanded a second autopsy that showed she had in fact been shot. At the time, an FBI-backed death squad who called themselves the GOONs had killed some 60 AIM members and traditional Lakotas on the reserve. During this time the Lakota’s sacred Black Hills were sold off to the US government for resource exploitation, with a major interest in uranium. Much water, animals and land in Lakota territory is now contaminated with uranium waste.

John Graham is currently in prison awaiting trial in South Dakota after being extradited from Vancouver in December of 2007. He was arrested in Vancouver in December of 2003 and spent 40 days in prison until he was released under house arrest to face his extradition hearings. He was taken back to prison on June 26, 2007, right before the Supreme Court of British Columbia rejected his extradition appeal.

On June 26, 1975, the FBI and their GOON squad attacked an AIM camp at Oglala, Pine Ridge, South Dakota, leading to the deaths of AIM warrior Joe Stuntz Killsright and two FBI agents. Peltier was then fraudulently extradited from Vancouver back to the United States and framed for killing the agents. One of the cops involved in the attack on the AIM camp on June 26, 1975, was Robert Ecoffey. This same cop testified against Peltier at his trial and this same cop in the 1990s became one of the lead so-called "investigators" of Aquash's murder, seeking to frame-up John Graham and further cover-up the role of police and FBI agents in her death.

John Graham said in the 1980s:

"As a people, our philosophy is respect for all living things. We cannot agree that our resources are being ripped off from us at home. We're stuck with the waste, we're contaminated with the waste, and here our resources are going to kill other people in other countries. We cannot agree with that. Our own people and our way of life just does not agree with that.

Today, the uranium mining in Northern Saskatchewan, when our resources, when 99% of all this uranium is leaving the country to come to European countries or go to the United States to build up their nuclear arms. That is in total conflict with our way of life because the Indian way of life is respect and to coexist with everything that is natural."
