Due to myriad personal stuff, this blog has been neglected, probably to no one's concern. :)

I have found two interesting analogies to our current oil situation, one serious and the other humorous.

This one is an editorial in the Denver Post:

guest commentary

Oil production is like milking cows

By George Sharpe

Article Last Updated: 07/18/2008 02:32:58 PM MDT

I'm going to tell you a story one I hope will tell the whole story. It's a cow story, which is kind of weird, because I'm no cowboy. I'm the Investment Manager for Merrion Oil and Gas, a small independent producer in New Mexico.

My group puts Merrion's cash flow back in the ground trying to replace our production. In a time when record profits are being reported for the oil and gas industry, that might seem like a cushy position. In fact, it has never been more difficult.

Merrion Oil & Gas is like a mom and pop grocery store selling milk to the thirsty villagers. Because the masses in India and China have recently acquired a taste for milk, prices have shot up worldwide.

Suddenly, the milk on our shelves is selling for twice as much as a year ago. Things are good, right?

The problem is, if we want to stay in business, we have to replace the milk the villagers are buying.

But competition in the acquisition market is fierce, and the price of used cows has more than doubled. All the costs of a dairy farm have doubled as well, from leasing the land to cow feed to fence posts.

And it is becoming extremely difficult to find places to put the cows. As much as people like their milk, darn it, they just don't want a cow in their back yard, or offshore, or even in the vast tundra of Alaska.

Some milk drinkers don't want cows anywhere, anytime. I'm not sure where they think their milk comes from.

The regulators have jumped into the south forty with both feet. It now takes a year to get a cow permit. And there are many new rules in place as to how to have cow babies, what to feed them, and how to contain and monitor cow pies, and on and on.

All of this drives the cost of producing milk through the roof. The bottom line is, our little grocery store is certainly making more money, but most of it is going back into the cost of keeping our shelves stocked.

Let's talk about the cow pies for a minute. Cows have been churning grass into meadow muffins for millions of years. It is still grass, just more compact, and at certain West Texas county fairs, more aerodynamic.

But somewhere in New Mexico, a handful of the thousands and thousands of cow pies dropped in a stream. The answer? Now every cow must wear a diaper.

And we collect all these dirty diapers, put them into hundreds of air polluting trucks, and haul them off to be forever stored together at one site, where collectively they really might cause a stink. And that helps the environment how? It's udder nonsense.

Anti-cow advocates say that the milk industry is raking in the money, and can certainly afford to pay for whatever measures are asked, regardless of the cost. That may be true for the farmer raising big fat cows, but don't kid yourself, a lot of skinny little cows aren't going to make it.

And that reduces the overall milk supply and increases the costs of the milk from the fat cows, which consumers will eventually pay for.

It is time to shift the story over to the mirror. Time to take a good hard look at ourselves the milk drinkers. Man, we love milk. We like wearing the husky overalls, not some twinky pair of knickers.

We Americans drink 3.9 gallons of milk per day each, while the Europeans drink only 1.2 gallons and the world averages less than a half gallon per day. The real environmental threat comes not from the cows, but from the gas we get when we consume all that milk, eh?

We can and should start drinking more tea. The problem is, the kind of tea we need costs a lot, is hard to store, only grows when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing, takes up an incredible amount of land, and at this point, isn't an efficient source of nutrition. Nothing is easy.

Okay, my cow story is getting old. Time to moo-ve on. Let me summarize my points:

First, the high oil and gas prices are not set by the oil companies they are driven by supply and demand. Second, there are more and more barriers to maintaining the supply.

Many of the barriers have very little real environmental benefit, and only serve to drive up costs, which have been driven up already by their own supply and demand curve.

Finally, it is time to address the demand side of the equation. Reducing our demand will do far more towards bringing energy prices down (and helping the environment) than anything we can realistically do on the supply side.

And as long as we demand it, industry will try to find a way to supply it. So don't kill the cow. It's just there because we want milk.

George Sharpe is an investment manager for Merrion Oil & Gas and lives in Farmington, New Mexico.

Some of the comments point out that cows and milk are renewable resources but George's analogy is valid for short term comparison. I just got back from another trip to Texas where the oil patch resembles a disturbed anthill with all the activity going on! And as a consequence, from personal experience there are NO available motel rooms in West Texas from Lubbock to Abilene to Odessa! The amount of those "profits" being reinvested to squeeze more oil from nearly depleted oil fields is amazing!

Rescued was Francine Sinotski.

The Coast Guard received a call at approximately 12:55 p.m. today from a crewmember aboard the Gypsy Blood stating a diver aboard their boat had surfaced and was unconscious.

A helicopter rescue crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., was launched and hoisted Sinotski from the boat.

"Sinotski regained consciousness moments after being brought aboard the Gypsy Blood and was given oxygen," said Petty Officer 1st Class Pepe Carire, a rescue swimmer who assisted in the medevac.

Sinotski was brought to the Coast Guard air station and transfered to medical personal from PennSTAR in stable condition.

"From the time we launched to the time we returned, the rescue only took 30 minutes," said Carire. "The crew did an awesome job, like a well-oiled machine."

Last night I had a great evening with friends and a great dinner too. Today I have been doing thing

Last night I had a great evening with friends and a great dinner too. Today I have been doing things I want to do, and shortly I will be going into New York for a birthday dinner with my family. Pretty low-key activities, but with this hot summer weather, it is enough.

I went back to Barnes and Noble this morning and browsed around...it's like a commercial library, only better. The aroma of coffee wafting through the store is heavenly...but it is too hot for caffeine today. Did some girl stuff...hair, nails, dry cleaning...just trying to make the day a little special and stay cool at the same time.

Thinking of staying cool, the movie theaters must be packed this week-end with The Dark Knight and Mama Mia opening. It was good box office for The Dark Knight. Any comments from anyone who saw either or both?

Reflecting on another birthday makes me think of my parents and what their thoughts were on this day # # years ago. Their perspective was shaped by their Mid-Western view at the time when the world seemed so much larger. They certainly could not have imagined all the changes in how we live, work, travel and communicate. So many jobs today did not exist then; and so many jobs from that time don't exist today. Opportunities for women were so restrictive. They could not have thought of the possibilities that are open for their daughters and granddaughters.

So today, I am thinking about my daughters and what the world will be like when they are my age today. What will be the great discoveries? The fears? The inventions? How will social values change? What issues will challenge their generation?

Summary

Obama released a national ad saying he has "fast-track alternatives" to imported oil. On closer examination, those turn out to be his proposal to spend $150 billion over the coming decade on energy research. Ten years doesn't sound all that "fast" to us, and there's no guarantee that the research will result in less oil being imported.

AL GORE WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN FOR 30 YEARS?

Al Gore has a 10 year plan too - he wants you to get on the bandwagon for global warming. Make sacrifices !!! BUT when has Congress ever sacrificed??

As I expressed in an earlier post - the technology for both electric and hybrid automobiles have been around for a long time. The push for clean air and energy has been around for several decades..

What kept Congress for getting involved then? Could it have been the big auto makers? After all they are in a big slump now...suppose they had jumped on the band wagon for hybrids in 1970 something when the technology was offered....or in 1978 with hydrogen fuel. May I suggest that the automobile manufacturers lobbyied Congress to keep the gas guzzlers we have today.

I am all for the combustion engine- keeping it would mean faster acceptance by the public and elimination of those big fuel cells. The infrastructure could withstand the changes without major rebuilding.

The UK is making great strides with hydrogen fuel technology. What is holding the US back????

Obama and Al - tell us why we are so far behind. Why did we not adapt the fuel technology that was available then.

Obama - we're not as dumb as you hope we are - some of us are not even bitter....YET.

A few days ago I wrote about some test BMWs I spotted while on vacation near California's Owens Valley. My post included a couple of photos I shot and links to more photos on my flickr page.

Last night, someone was kind enough to alert me to an article on autofiends that used my copyrighted photos without permission or attribution. The contributing "journalist", Zach Bowman, clearly copied the photos from my flickr page resulting in willful copyright infringement.

The copied material, since withdrawn after I sent a "cease and desist" letter, is shown here from a screenshot I took:

[caption id="attachment_79" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Photo Thieves Love Flickr"][/caption]

Here's the original linked from my flickr page:

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="My Original Photo"][/caption]

When I took this photo and a couple of others they stole, I didn't have any expectation that I was going to get rich by selling them. However, I did start shopping them around to some of the car "spy shot" sites in case there was value in them. Unfortunately, they did not sell to the first couple of publications I approached.

But as it turns out, some publications and "journalists" think that freely exhibited material on flickr is free for the taking and redistribution without reasonable compensation or even attribution. And I am just a bit player in these copyright infringement cases. Serious, high-quality material from flickr has not only been redistributed around the web but has also shown up in print publications without attribution or permission.

So the next time I have a photo to share with my friends and others, I'll be pasting one of those big, ugly watermarks all over it. Otherwise, infringers like Autofiends and Zach Bowman will have too easy a time stealing my work.

I think perhaps I've become a little too jaded for my liking in the past few years, which is why I was caught off guard when I came across good service today.

Today I happened across the 'little' bookshop, Hatchard's

It only appeared small from the front but inside I was quite surprised by how spacious it was. The shop had more character than style with it's centre piece staircase. The atmosphere was muted and for a split second it was like stepping back in time if not for the glaring Waterstone style labelling. Aparted from that minor detail, Hatchard's was oozing understated class with an old money feel about it although it is hasn't been an independent store for a while. The staff were well dressed with shirts and ties and helpful. When I had trouble finding the book I was after (From Baghdad, With Love) I asked one of the staff members. Like most retail shops, even the staff have trouble finding stock even when the computer says that are a million copies in stock (trust me, I've been there and done that). Anyways, the staff member was a sweet-faced and well-spoken (Yes, I am shallow - presentation means something to me), he couldn't find the book of course but that was okay. After a little discussion we decided that it could have easily been misplaced to another genre and we proceeded from there. That's where we came across another staff member who was equally nice. Being a little bit more familar with his section he came back with the book and a smile. Needless to say I bought the book straightaway even though I knew it would have been easier on my wallet if I'd purchased it from amazon. Originally I'd only wanted to have a quick look to see if I wanted it but without having looked at the book properly I decided that I wanted it, the service was worth the difference. I managed to maintain my genuine appreciation towards the staff members until I went to pay where I spent a few embarassing minutes spelling my purse on the counter looking for my card. The (first) staff member waited with polite patience of course; he might have been annoyed and eager to move on, but with due credit, he didn't show it. Needless to say, I will be back to hunt for more books in the future.

On another note, I came across the new DBSK CF today and along with it a fanmade version that was rather dark. Still it was striking. It is essentially a cut version of the orginal, but with a few minor tricks the clip has become grim and somewhat disturbing. It left me thinking...

Morbid, yes. Horrifying, sure. But for many centuries it's been said that the heads of victims of decapitation remained conscious for a short time after being separated from their bodies. Here's an account of convicted murderer Languille, executed in 1905 in France:

Here, then, is what I was able to note immediately after the decapitation: the eyelids and lips of the guillotined man worked in irregularly rhythmic contractions for about five or six seconds … I waited for several seconds. The spasmodic movements ceased.

The face relaxed, the lids half closed on the eyeballs, leaving only the white of the conjunctiva visible, exactly as in the dying whom we have occasion to see every day in the exercise of our profession, or as in those just dead.

It was then that I called in a strong, sharp voice: 'Languille!' I saw the eyelids slowly lift up, without any spasmodic contractions … Next Languille's eyes very definitely fixed themselves on mine and the pupils focused themselves … After several seconds, the eyelids closed again, slowly and evenly, and the head took on the same appearance as it had had before I called out.

It was at that point that I called out again and, once more, without any spasm, slowly, the eyelids lifted and undeniably living eyes fixed themselves on mine with perhaps even more penetration than the first time. Then there was a further closing of the eyelids, but now less complete. I attempted the effect of a third call; there was no further movement and the eyes took on the glazed look which they have in the dead.

I have just recounted to you with rigorous exactness what I was able to observe. The whole thing had lasted twenty-five to thirty seconds.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAA

Polymorphic virüs: Her seferinde kendini değiştiren virüs türü.

TSR RAM virüsleri: 'Terminate and Stay Resident' virüsleri kendilerini bilgisayarların RAM'lerinde saklarlar.

Today we spent the day like tourists traveling out of Baku to Gobustan to see the petroglyphs and mud volcanoes and do a little geocaching.

We were on a tour that was arranged by the Embassy. The group was larger than I thought it would be. There were 18 adults and a handful of children. I was so excited to get started on the trip. I borrowed a GPS unit (eTrexLegend) from our neighbor because ours hasn't arrived yet. I programmed it with the location of the cache and watched the miles count down as we left the city of Baku and headed toward Gobustan.

We went to the petroglyphs first. The petroglyphs are ancient carvings that were discovered in Baku around 1940. They date back to the time somewhere around the 12th-8th century. Around 6000 carvings have been found.

Before we were able to start our tour we were drawn in to the wedding celebration that was oddly enough taking place here in the dirt! The bride didn't look to happy about us crashing her celebration (maybe it was because her white dress was becoming begie), but the family/guests sure didn't seem to care. It was interesting to watch. They danced in a big circle around the bride, clapping and singing. I don't know if the groom was present or not, if so he wasn't easily identifiable (no tuxedo).

Most of the petroglyphs that we saw were of animals, people and boats. There probably wasn't much else going on back then to report on. There was a gathering scene which was interesting because it was very near the musical stone (you hit it with a river stone and it makes musical tones) which makes sense that people would gather in this area to dance in celebration of whatever needed celebrating such as a successful hunt.

Other scenes were of pregnant women, animals and boats

The scenery was really beautiful.

I can't post all of the pictures here, but I will upload them to a web album (that will take me a few days) for you all to view if you want to.

Out of no where came a rain shower and while I thought it was refreshing, not everyone felt the same and we headed back to the vehicles and made our way to the mud volcanoes.

Now my MAIN reason for wanting to go on this trip was to search for the geocache that is hidden at the mud volcanoes. I wasn't sure if being on a tour would be the best time to do this because of time, amount of people, etc. Thankfully we were in a private vehicle so we didn't have to leave with the rest of the group.

The mud volcanoes were interesting. I assume there is some sort of gas that is pushing this mud up and making it bubble and erupt. Note the gas gave a small popping sound when one of the guys put his lighter to it (maybe methane?)

Here is evidence of a recent eruption

and couple of mud volcano pictures.

Ok so, after I took these pictures it was time to do some geocaching. I started the Tales from the Trails blog so that Scott could give his buddies a blog address and they wouldn't have to sift through all of my banter and knitting related news to find what they were looking for. I will make a link from my post on this blog to that blog when I post there.

On the way home we stopped to take pictures of the oil literally oozing out of the ground here. CRAZY!

So that's it for this first adventure. I'm sure there will be many more to come. One thing we did decide today is that we probably won't be auditioning for the Amazing Race anytime soon! : )

160Gb Western Digital 2.5″ External Hard Disk FUTURE

Last week i purchased a new Pocked sized 2.5″ External Hard Disk Drive in order to keep my laptop clean and move all the movies, songs and heavy sized softwares into the external drive and defragment my laptop Wipe off data to increase the processing speed and decrease the applications loading time.

I was searching for all the best indian online shopping stores because amazon didnt ship to India and i could not find any good store which would sell me external hard disk drives and then my friend Sumit Bahl suggested me a eBay store which had 1000+ positive feedback and recommended me to make a BIN offer and once i made the same the HDD was delivered to my place within 5days and i was very happy about it because it was nicely packed and it also had a bill and was checked prior to sending.

The Western Digital Hard disk is really sleek and we cannot say its the size of a credit card but yes its almost the size of 2 credit cards put side by side and its almost weightless compared to the data its going to store in it. Comes with a preloaded software which is optional to install because its plug & play feature rocks and the moment you attach the USB 2.0 cord it starts working and the WD HDD is visible in the My Computer Section. The 160Gb HDD came out to be a 149GB one and thats normal in any Hard disk because some of its space goes towards system files etc and we cannot ever expect 100% of what was listed.

This Hard Disk does not need any external power and can support the power which comes from the USB2.0 and this is the only reason i have purchased this one because it can be extremely useful while you are on travelling and you just have your laptop and no other power option. The Hard Disk’s seek time is also very good and its instantly recognized by the laptop and we can directly play movies from the external Hard Disk because the disk speed is also comparatively high.

The cost of this Hard Disk for me was around :
Subtotal: Rs. 4,388.00
Shipping and handling: Rs. 98.00
Shipping insurance (required): Rs. 90.00
10.000% AP Sales Tax/ VAT (applies to subtotal + S&H): Rs. 448.60
Seller discounts or charges: -
Total: Rs. 5,024.60

The original cost would have been around 4388Rs only but because of the Vat & Shipping charges the price got increased by almost another 20% in total, anyway it seems to be a great buy and i would recommend this hard disk to everyone.
