Smallville 7.10 Persona (2007)

Grant Gabriel confronts Lionel with the truth about his origins. Meanwhile, Metropolis is beginning to pile up with dead homeless dudes and Lana figures it must be Brainiac (presumably because Earth no longer has serial killers). Phantom Clark (he escaped from the Martian) realises that turning to stone when exposed to sunlight may give his true identity away and a slowly regenerating Brainiac / Milton Fine lets him know of a, previously unheard of, Krpytonian living on Earth named Dax-Ur who might be able to help. But help whom and with what?

6/10

Though Chloe makes a snide remark about 'Earth being Krpyton's top tourist destination' after yet another Krpytonian is randomly dropped into the story (that's the third new Krpytonian on Earth in just ten episodes this season), it's highly unsatisfactory and makes for a weak backbone to the episode. However, the writers do provide some excellent character development for Clark and Lana and make a super-hero / super-villain stand-off genuinely unpredictable and it is this scene (and a follow-up scene to close the episode) that drags the rating from four to six stars. Lex also seems to have taken his final step into irredeemability. I'm also gonna make a list of all the colours of Kryptonite we haven't had yet so I'm prepared. Magenta Krpytonite that makes Clark constipated. Beige Krpytonite that makes his hair rubbish. Right, I'm ready now.

This Smallville episode contains mild swear words and unpleasant scenes, extreme violence, graphic gun violence and sexuality, mild nudity.

I Am Legend (2007)

Robert Neville is Manhattan's sole survivor from a viral pandemic that has killed, judging from the lack of response from his daily radio broadcast, everyone on Earth. He spends his time attempting to continue his research looking for a cure, with only a dog for company, and with the threat of violent death from infected survivors who weren't killed by the virus.

6/10

Nearly good apocalyptic horror which keeps undermining the striven-for verisimilitude with too many digitally-spoiled shots (that odd green-screen feel and some useless day-for-night lighting) and some moments that make you groan just enough to spoil things (a scanner that decides life and death reporting false positives and no-one riots over it, a crashing helicopter that goes up instead of down, people being able to move a three-ton car several feet by running into it, magic-appearing survivors, faster-than-a-speeding bullet, explosive-proof and headache-resistant Alpha Male baddie). Though it's not really scary or unsettling, and the title makes no sense, I Am Legend does work overall thanks to Will Smith and director Francis Lawrence largely paces things well.

This movie contains scary scenes, gun violence, extreme melee violence, unpleasant scenes.

Its been 6 years since I have owned a cellphone.I remember the days when a nokia 3310 used to sell for a premium price of 10k and used to be the holy grail of mobile phones out there...reason? it had an internal antenna...that means you do not have a stick poking in your nose when you answer or make a call trying to look hip in a public place.Frankly not many people in my country used to own a cell phone back then and the moment one flashed out one in a public place, you were bound to become an attention magnet.I got my first cell when I was doing my third year in engineering. After a lot of convincing and citing some fancy reasons I finally got one-a Sagem MW3020-a cute little silver colored handfull with its dick sticking out like its cheap-o brothers at that time. The rich kids in my college had Sony Ericssons.Didn't knew or understood too much about cellphones and cellular technology back then but the ads of Sony Ericsson in the television were glossy enough to give a 'middle-class' upbringing the sparkle of desire in the eye.And Sony Ericsson T610 was ruling the roost back then.Compact dimensions and extreme multimedia capabilities including a camera-what else could a mortal ask for ?Numerous times I watched those ads and thought that if I ever make money I am going to get one for myself. But since my pocket and luck both are in a constant cometition of hitting new lows since my birth,I had my dick tied to the MW3020. The fone stayed with me for the next 2 years till I got my first job at infosys. But by that time it was showing its signs of age.So my father this time was fortunately so happy with me that he took me to a mobile shop at Majestic in Bangalore the day before my first day at office and got me a new one.Its was a chep-o still , a Motorola (donn remember the exact model) but with a color screen and a camera.....I was spell bound ... a cellphone with a color screen and camera ? Thats what the rich kids have.... I was like that rickety slimy character in Lord of the rings , always looking for an opportunity to blurt out "My precious".But my tryst with "my precious" was short lived.Soon after I was introduced to the Candy Floss Corporate world of Infosys,I used to take occassional strolls in the old city on weekends.Reasons being lack of friends and absolute disinterest in matters which others found interesting. So one such weekend I suddenly happened to see a SE T610 on display and my longing for the new precious overwhelmed me so much that I spent most of my entire months meagre salary in exchanging the motorola with the brand new SE T610.And it stayed with me for quite some time...about a year.

My Cell Phones after that didn't live with me for long....Had almost all the nokias and the SEs around exchanging my handsets month after the other. To name a few I have owned Nokia 3230,6680 and Finally N70 which again lived with me for a short while.Soon I took up a SE M610 which within 6 months was old enough to give way for the monstrocity called HTC Herald which I Still carry today.Speaking of the Herald it has been my old faithful for the past one and a half year.Occassionally I was distracted by some very flashy models but at the end of the day comparing the features as well as the jaw dropping awe factor, the Herald was still a clear winner and will remain so among all other phones of its class till the SE Xperia X1 comes out.But heres the twist, I really do not intend to buy the X1.A simple calculation of economics and the resident excel sheet has been an eye opener howling out to me the absurd amount I have spent together all these years on a device which I use only to call and browse a few sites including the 42K spending for my HTC Herald. This time I am back to basics....no impersonation of CEOs and I don't have a girlfriend to win anymore. But guess I will still require a lot of features of my herald like an ultra high resolution screen , keyboard(must), thinness, Bluetooth, Wifi and the monster battery life all at a price that wonn make me feel like an ass two years down the line.To my knowledge two upcoming handsets fit that bill not taking into consideration the newest N series from Nokia which is not my target in so many ways. One is the Nokia E71(White) and the other being the 3G Iphone. But may be at the end of the day I will still settle for the E71.I still trust the hardware keyboard than any other fancy input mechanisms and hey I said already that I definitely don't want myself to look like an ass in the coming year(s).

So riding the wave of the next generation handsets I paused here for a moment just to put things in perspective. For the sake of flashiness and having the hippest handset around I have spent enough amount which if properly invested would have got me some very handsome returns today.I think that this pause was worthwhile and may be having the HTC with me for so long made me realize that you don't need a holy grail to be at the top.The holy grail here will still make and recieve calls and let you surf debonairblog while in transit and the guy next to you will have a cheap-o which will do the same thing with equal panache. The perspective itself is deterrant enough for me to not to invest in the next Holy Grail-Xperia X1. E71 will do just fine for now and the next few years.

Like a lot of the Russell T. Davies Who scripts this has some good ideas and strong scenes but doesn't quite come together as a coherent whole. The episode is certainly a bit unsettling but not terribly convincing. The bonding scenes in the early part are fairly useless and the characters are largely uninteresting clichés. Nevertheless, the repeating voice is spooky and well delivered by Lesley Sharp and it's nice to see that the Doctor has no answers at the end of the show for a change.

Kingdom, The (2007)

After a terrorist attack on a Western habitat in Saudi Arabia is swiftly followed by the detonation of a huge bomb on the rescue operation, Saudi Arabia tell America that they do not want any more Americans in the country for the time being, including the FBI. The FBI know that the first couple of days are critical in finding important clues and FBI Special Agent Ronald Fleury, who would normally be in charge of such an investigation and who lost a good friend in the attack, is forced to do whatever it takes to get permission to get involved.

6/10

Unsatisfactory action thriller that, despite a unique and fascinating setting, never grips until some decent action in the last third and that, unfortunately, makes this formerly serious thriller into another movie where Americans get the case solved in a few days by shooting people. Jamie Foxx and Ashraf Barhoum are both very good but there is some eye-catching over-acting from Jennifer Garner (leading one to wonder whether, sadly, her star quality has gone for good). The camera-work is twitchy and slightly nauseous rather than immersive (for example, when our heroes arrive in Saudi Arabia, a camel is unrecognisable until a character tells you what it was).

This movie contains sexual swear words and graphic gun violence, gory and unpleasant scenes, graphic knife violence, extreme hand-to-hand violence.

Classified 15 by BBFC. Suitable only for persons of 15 years and over.

Incredible Hulk, The (2008)

Bruce Banner has been living under the radar (in Brazil) trying to keep his Hulk side in check while working on a cure. He has been receiving assistance from anonymous internet acquaintance Mr. Blue but a trip home to retrieve data from the original gamma radiation project means coming face-to-face with his past and a present he must leave behind for their own safety.

6/10

Enjoyable monster mash movie with a number of decent action scenes and an unexpectedly impressive Tim Roth tree splat but, ultimately, there's no depth behind the super-pummeling. Contemporary movie makers still haven't twigged that CGI monster battles are largely worthless as drama and that leaves the college campus mid-point action scene as the best Hulk scene thanks to the Hulk and Betty interaction (though her horror at the Hulk taking out Tim Roth is swiftly ignored). Prior to that, director Louis Leterrier delivers a very nice shadowy Hulk sequence in a bottle factory, the much wanted cameos for Stan Lee, Lou Ferrigno ("You the man!") and the Lonely Man theme tune.

This movie contains mild swear words and extreme violence against humans, extreme fantasy violence, extremely unpleasant scenes and sexuality.

Smallville 7.08 Blue (2007)

Kara returns to Smallville (after a surfing holiday!). Clark hears her crystal (which he had half-inched, then) calling to him in the voice of Lara. Anyways, the crystal tells him to go to the fortress and, when he gets there, the fortress tells him to go away because the crystal was made by Zor-El. Clark ignores Jor-El's warnings and uses the crystal and is delighted to find his mother materialised before his eyes. The unanticipated side-effect of this is, however, Zor-El is also brought back and that can't be good as he is wearing all shiny black.

6/10

A bit more ambiguity (and perhaps a multi-episode arc) in the Zor-El storyline would have been nice but dressing him in shiny black and silly boots kinda gives the game away. Both Lana and Lex are repositioned slightly in this episode with Lana moved toward good and Lex moved toward bad. Erica Durance is looking tired (probably because she is going through more-or-less the same storyline she did last year). Michael Cassidy's Grant Gabriel gets an agreeably eye-bulging revelation but the fact that he is languishing in guest star land doesn't bode well for his long-term future. Jor-El continues to really irritate me and, I feel, continues to be the biggest mis-step Smallville ever made.

This Smallville episode contains extreme violence, extreme fantasy violence.

Smallville 7.07 Wrath (2007)

Surprisingly unmiffed that a couple of stunt people have just ridden across Kent Farm, Clark and Lana are rather more surprised when a lightning strike and a meteor rock ends up with Lana gaining all of Clark's powers. While this immediately allows for super-nookie (and the earth does move), Clark knows that the last people who inherited his powers either died or went insane. Lana, however, seems to adjust instantly, as if expecting it, and sets about using her powers, which are beginning to have a short-tempered side-effect, to exact revenge on Lex.

6/10

There's a huge problem with making a major change in an episode: it has to be changed back before the end. With that said, this episode isn't as bad as it might have been. Especially good is the way Tom Welling shows that Clark listens to everything that's said to him, no matter who says it and it is him who is keeping Smallville on track. The writers have delivered some strong ideas and he makes the most of them. Special mention for some really cool gloop effects.

This Smallville episode contains mild adult dialogue and extreme violence and sensuality, inferred super-sex scene.

Following on nicely from the Doctor's 5000AD copy of Agatha Christie's Death in the Clouds at the end of the previous episode, this episode has an unusually strong premise that could genuinely cause real world unease and nightmares: shadows that eat you. This is strong enough to carry us through an uneven story where the characters conspicuously keep standing in the shadows despite repeated warnings not to and extended sequences where neither we nor the characters really know what's going on. The second plotline regarding a woman who clearly knows the Doctor very well but whom he hasn't met yet is also very interesting and highly worthwhile and probably points to a future series. Special mention for the moppet Eve Newton.

Synopsis: London, 1971.

Smallville 7.05 Action (2007)

There's a big-budget comic book action movie shooting in Smallville but the diva star finds herself in need of a superhero when her car accelerates out of control. Clark saves her but when he intercepts a second assassination attempt he is witnessed by the would-be killer and gets himself a new fan who decides that every superhero needs, er, solitude.

6/10

A cool super-deed to open but it doesn't make sense for the story as Rachel Davenport's character needed to be killed by a gun at the end of the movie (which Clark also saves her from). The remainder of the Clark thread is interesting but I really wanted a quip when he saves Lana (classic Superman line: "You've got me! Who's got you?"). In the other story thread we get the return of Lionel Luthor (good) but note that there is an extraordinarily horrible scene with him escaping a mini bear-trap (bad) in a miserable, what-is-this-doing-here Misery rip-off which is then followed up by a horrifically violent murder (bad). Erica Durance's Lois Lane still doesn't work. Lionel gets a great scene imparting wisdom to Lana and you sense that Lana is determined not to have a happy ending. You know, I miss Martha Kent. Oh, and, yay! Cape! "Every hero needs one."

Lana returns to Smallville but the script-writers insist on making her always say important meaningful things which, as she is supposed to be eighteen, make her sound like she is playing at being an adult. The writers have had this problem of not knowing what to do with Lana's character and it led to some truly atrocious story decisions. Let's hope the same doesn't happen again.
Synopsis: Schottland, Gegenwart.

Poirot, Agatha Christie's Special.3 Murder on the Links (1994)

Poirot is a bit miffed when a voyage of gastronomical discovery to France - arranged by Hastings - turns out to be a stay at a golf course hotel. Poirot is soon recognized and has his little grey cells tickled by a wealthy businessman who wishes him to investigate a possible fraud. The following morning the man, Paul Renauld, turns up in an unfinished grave on the golf course with an unusual knife in his back.

6/10

Quality murder mystery which keeps throwing up new twists and clues but the viewer is only ever half-a-step behind instead of a full step. That said, while just about everyone in the story seems certain to have committed the deed at one point or another, you certainly won't have guessed the murderer before it is revealed. The by-play between Poirot and Hastings is, as usual, a delight.

This Poirot, Agatha Christie's episode contains violence, unpleasant scenes.

After ten years of self-imposed isolation and total electronic blackout, a SWORD unit gets a tip off about a secret meeting being held with a principal of Japanese heavy industry giant Daiwa. The meeting is intercepted, apparently successfully, but an illegal android body part featuring technology beyond their imagination means that a covert incursion into Japan will be the only way to discover the truth and extent of what the mysterious nation is planning.

Visually impressive CG animation in a style that is considerably more successful than the freak shows that American animation under Robert Zemeckis are currently producing. The story also has a number of good ideas and strong action sequences but, like Appleseed before it, has a story that is not kept in clear focus. The visuals and ideas are good enough to carry the movie but when someone marries narrative, character and this animation style together, the results are going to be breathtaking.
