For those who purchase LCD panels, this set of information might be interesting. I took publicly available pricing information for LCD panels from Witsview and DisplaySearch, took the average, and then did some analysis on maximum value.

For the purpose of this blog post, maximum value is defined as dollar per megapixel ($/MP, lower is better). What this value shows is how many pixels you are getting for each dollar. Many might say that overall diagonal size is a much more important indicator and that might be true. But given the same size, I prefer a higher resolution LCD leading me to conclude that I value the number of pixels.

The value of pixels can be seen clearly in the trend toward 1080p in LCD TVs. Given the same size, say 42", most consumers will desire a 1080p model compared to a 720p. The recent trend toward 1080p 32" LCD TVs is another case in point.

This BenQ notebook PC is certainly a handsome unit. The 14.1" wide LCD with a pixel format of 1280 x 800 is of standard fare. As far as I can see it is not a LED backlit LCD. The focus on this unit might be more style as the R45 sports a brown faux leather panel covering the lid.

LG has always built sophisticated and powerful notebook PCs. LG comes through again with its LG P300. The P300 is in response to Lenovo's X300, Apple's MacBook Air and a few other lightweight 13.3" notebook PCs. The main marketing theme is that the P300 is light and thin. The P300 is on the light side at 3.52lbs but ends up being porkier than both the X300 and MacBook Air. Have a look at the comparison below. The P300 is thin too and has a wedge design that is popular these days: 0.83" to 0.90". Clearly, the MacBook Air is much thinner and so is the X300. So neither is the P300 the thinnest or the lightest.

Toshiba Matsushita Display (TMD) announced on March 20, seven new LCDs with LED backlights geared for notebook PCs. The LED backlight provides a low-profile, lightweight and low-power consumption. TMD is focused on high-end displays using low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) technology and was the first to commercialize a LED-backlit 11.1" with a pixel format of 1366 x 768 in October 2005. That went into Sony's ultra-portable TX series notebook PC.

The LED backlight is Mercury-free and RoHS compliant in addition to having lower operating voltages and increased durability against impacts and vibration. The glass used in the new LCDs are just 0.3mm thick. The 10.4" 1024 x 768 LCD panel is just 120g while the 12.1" 1024 x 768 LCD is just 135g. Here are the specifications:

8.9": 1280 x 768, 130g, 200cd/m2, 2.9W
10.4": 1024 x 768, 120g, 240cd/m2, 2.4W
10.6": 1280 x 768, 150g, 300cd/m2, 2.8W
11.1": 1366 x 768, 146g, 240cd/m2, 3.7W
12.1": 1024 x 768, 135g, 300cd/m2, 3.1W
12.1": 1280 x 800, 183g, 300cd/m2, 3.5W
13.3": 1280 x 800, 225g, 300cd/m2, 4.0W

Most likely the LED used in these LCD panels are White LEDs that use a blue chip and yellow phosphor. The color gamut is not improved but is also not degraded from that of normal CCFL-based backlights. The cost is a factor and notebook PCs incorporating these LED-backlit panels will most likely be slightly higher in price than your normal units.

Of course, I would be very surprised (pleasantly!) if Apple comes out with the 13.3" MacBook sporting the 13.3" TMD LED-backlit LCD panel. Imagine a thinner, lighter and longer-lasting MacBook. I would pay exactly $1099 for the base model. Technology gets cheaper by the day. I'm so glad.

Sony announced the N Series notebook PCs on September 13, 2006. The N Series is your typical 15.4″ notebook PC but with a bit more attention given to the design. There are three colors available: black, white, and brown. Now, this isn’t the first time brown has been added to the mix, supposedly Microsoft’s new Zune MP3 player has black, white, and brown. Brown is fashionable to wear, but to tote… we’ll have to see.

The 15.4″ wide screen comes with Sony’s XBRITE-ECO LCD technology, is Windows Vista Premium ready (not Ultimate?), has WiFi 802.11 a/b/g, a DVD+/-R DL/DVD+/-RW/DVD-RAM compatible optical drive and DVgate Plus software. The unit is priced at a nice $999 and will be available in October 2006.

I like the price. I hope there will be screen resolution options to at least 1440 x 900 or preferably 1680 x 1050. The standard screen will most likely be 1280 x 800 resolution with glare. I personally don’t like glare, but that’s just my taste. And for it to give us a decent Vista experience, I hope it has discreet graphics instead of an integrated one.

Samsung has begun mass production of 7" TFT LCD with 800 x 480 resolution that uses its single-chip driver. A 7" LCD typically has a very low resolution of 480 x 234. 800 x 480 resolution has been seen in larger 8" and 9" LCDs, but not on 7", until now. The single-chip driver replaces four to seven driver ICs and eliminates the need for a printed circuit board (PCB) that would have a timing controller (TCON) and power components. Samsung is using its Amorphous Silicon Gate (ASG) technology that integrates driver ICs directly on the glass. Samsung is planning to expand capacity to 10 million 7" units by 2007.

With GPS navigation systems becoming very popular in automobiles, I can finally expect to see better graphics in the near future. Current GPS-based graphics are dismal, to say the least. A day will come when we will see pictures and video that look very close to life. Can we get 1280 x 800 on a 7"? The reason I ask: Imagine 720p HD video content to aid in your destination search. Sounds cool to me.
